H is surrounded by un ngttoulUiral country wnio'j when more fully de veloped will be Eecouil lo none in Ihe "Inland Empire." Its close proximity to the Des Cbute river nhsurea ail needed nnwvr for future use. "With nil Its natural advantages, will lis future be all yon nntiolpate? That matter largely rests with its citizens. Oar business men are energetic and eapable, and aa new onea enter the field we hope to see all and Individual lines represented to the best Interests of the town, 'the bett business and the best paying proposition over pre sented to any town is its schools. This is a matter we cannot afford lo neglect. And I am glad to say that the seuttQient of our people appears to be on correct lines upon this matter. In the early days of Madras, which was only about a year ago, the di rectors of the school district bought lumber on credit. Tiie citizens hauled the eume and erected a neut, com fortable, well lighted and well seated school house upon a beautiful pint d mated by the liberal and enterpris ing owners of the towuslte; also a con siderable amouut was paid on the lumber bill. All bidng a free offering and donation by our enterprising pioneer citizens. There is yet due and unpaid tho gtealcr part of the lumber hill. The creditor, Mr. Dee, has kindly waited patiently for the mouey justly due him. There now appears in the columns of The Pioneer "a notice of a social entertainment and box supper in the Piilmehu block on New Year's eve for the purpoxe of raising a part or all of this balance due. As citizens of the town and members of the com , muuity you should be, anil I am con rideuture, collectively and individually interested in Ibis matter, and we trust that you will come out and give this matter the encouragement and sup port that it merits. Great credit in due the pioneer members of this dis trict for their i (Torts iu the inittaory work in behalf of our schools They could not, however, calculate for the rapid development of the district, nor foreso the substantial upbuilding of the town. Therefore they necessarily hullded too juju1i, and for next year's use. we will require an a di.ii-nal mo i:. When these mattersiiie brought to our notice I am confident that the universal verdict of our people will be that the accommodations which we now and will f r the next year or two require are at beet only temporary, aud it certainly is to our best interests to keep any bonded or long slauding debt off" the district. It must he an admitted fact that the time will soon arrive wheu this district will be called on by our natural progress to build a modem, Jwell equipped school house, in which we will maintain a well graded school second to none in Crook county.
