Barcely a person can be found in Uma tilla county but wishes for capitalists to in Test their money in the development of the county, and desires to see her great resour ce brought to the front. Anything like excessive taxation of capital for this devel opment of resources of our county, repels capital. If we want railroads ire meat en courage them to a certain extent; if they ue built and become oppressive we must protect ourselras by wise legislation, but any excessive tax on the first railroad that is run into oar county, will be met by exces aire tolls and in the end the farmer who aesds his grain to market are really the loosen, for cattle men of all descriptions do not hare to use them, and all the amount STerUxed' comes, as we said before, by the wheat grower who patronize the road; but Surther if a principle of overtaxation is established on the first railroad enterprise, the peace commissions in the couBtrr. The Prospect at Indian War. Monday's dispatches contain ft long ac count of the closing scenes of the parley between the Ut Indian commissioner and thai tribe. The news described a tartliag scene some time since which was interpre ted as a Tote on the question of war or peace which involved the surrender of the mem bers of the tribe guilty o the mnrdcr of Meeker and others at the Agency, some mouths ago. It was decided that the In dians shcnld be surrendered on condition that they would be tried outside of Colora do. Reports have reached Sitka that troubles have broken out at Chilcat and that Klotz Elotz has been shot and not expected to live, and that war was imminent. Captain Beardtlee sent Sitka Jack with a party of Indians supplied with proriaiuns from the 'Jameston" to quell the trouble. Sitka Jack on leaving the Jamestown, loaded up with whitkey and started an his mission, visiting all the tribes ou his way. Including the Hoocbenoos and others, selling and dis tributing whiskey to all of them. On ar riving at the Chilcat river be dltptnstd abundant whiskey to the lower vllttge and then going to the scat of war at the upper vlllsge, made whiskey flaw like water. Prof. Moir and Her. Mr. Young, ot the Presbyterian mission, started to visit the Chilcat Tillage, but found the whole tribe had become utterly demoralized under the influence of Captain Reardtleex peace com. miuloner, and the chief sent notice to the Professor iloir't parly that h had no par ticular desire to see them as he had one guest already, Sitka Jack, and had just waked up from a tea day's drunken sleep. Onroo.v, December 27th, liS79. J It is an old saying, "in time of peace pre pare for war." In a country like this, in habited by murderess savages, the wisdom of being prepared to repel their murderous attaeka is self evident. Last winter dur. ing the scare, I wrote to Sharps P.lfle C. , also to G. W. Turner k Ron, who are a large gun making and gun dealing firm, of Boston. Soon after the reply came, the , Indian excitement passed away asd with ' it the immediate necessity fer guns and amnnition; we are slMl liable to Indian , outbreaks, and in view tbcreef, when relia ble breech loaders can be obtained at cost; would it sot be the most thing to have the people all armed; suca a ! preparation far their reception woafci do more to secure peace and save the lives of defenseless women and children, than all the greatly superior numbers ef the whites, when he knows the latter to be folly xrmed and prepared to receive him.
