SATURDAY .JUNE 15. 1878 r O ib ASH UTHKlt tSTKLUUKKCK. la com;hay ril Sir. Loksast;n we vis'r 1 U. Ageacy last Thursday for the pur oMof aecie; wlat vaa to be ana. We Uok Ukuer ith Major Ooraoyae, the oblig ing agcot, afterswch"e accepted an invi- tatiou free the Major to visit the Indian achool under the supervision of Father Con taniy. W remained some two hours hcar fetg the pupils recite, and were really tup prised to bee the promptness and correci aeas which teas exhibited byalL Oae class of aaallprls were called oat and were inter rogated on tb era dimes ts of arithmetic, and we were really astonished. One little girl cal led Mary, 6 years old, a daughter of a widow fcsownfcy the name of "Mrs. Ward, answered every question ashed her in addition and on iLc nltiplication table. Quite a number of tl inj were called upon to read and all of ths:a ccqiuted themselves with credit. They woe also questioned in geography and it was rea.L surprising to see with what ac curacy the questions were all answered. 1 i Vv i three girk nearly grown, via: C 1 x.. .aid &ph a Lafcrte and Emma .Liiguier of the Chief, Wenap Snoot, ;-o ire excellent readers. We had quite a number of them write their names on a piece of paper and their penmanship is equal to that of average white children of the same age. Ihe little girl Mary, ofwhomwespoke of above is rather an extraoadinary child of her age. It will amply pay any one to visit this school. There were about 14 scholars in attendance when we were there. Father Conrardy deserves much credit for his labors aad untiring patience and energy with bis pupHs. If the Government would sell a por tion of the lands belonging to this agency nnd apply the proceeds to the education of the children of the Indians and then see that they were oumpelled to attend school they would be doing something to civilite them, bat owing to the :xct that no provis ions are made to x.ucuc them and to cum- pe to ai -j. school, many of the chI 5 art ali, .. id u crow up zlta the v a s t. c - xc k uTa and tasghv by thi Ex-Gv. We tru4 the people will take hold of this mattrr in earnest as it depends on the action of thr people bow whe we are to berrlranl from the gras. of the grinding monopoly that has been sacking our life bl-nd.
