THE riO.MXE. la a lecture delivered some time 'since by Thomas Fitcb, he closed with the following glowing eulogy of the Pacific coast pioneer. The gallant pioneerl He is the type of American fraternity, for he has "Honor and courage;. Qualities that eagle-plume men-'ssouls And fit them for the sun." He climbs liko a huge fly upon the bald skull of some loft) mountain, and the primeval hills welcome- his foot rteps. He taps with the prospector's pick at the adamantine doors of the earth's treasure chambers, and at his demand they reveal their shining se crets. His glittering ax lays lov the reea-plumed forest monarchs, and on Hie emeroJdhued prairies he marks the sites of the cities yet to be. Not for him the science of the school; not for him the graces of culture; not for him the joys of home; not for hint, the sweet solaces of life. But ho reads the story of the ages written on the rocks and hears the tale of mysterious forces whispered by the midnight stars; and the priest-robtd mountains and the smiling lakes and white-lipped sun set seas are his kindred. Southward you shall behold him, undaunted; by the roar of the Colorado, over and on ward to listen to the wash of tropic waters. Northward his resolute face is turned toward the wooing moun tains of crystal, until the north star gleams like a mighty diamond in its gold and crimson settings of northern lights, and the sudden sun but for an instant hangs upon the verge of the polar night, a faint reminder of the lost louthern clime, while the booming artillery of the ice king hails the pio neer of polar seas. Westward ah, there is no longer a west! The iron lace with which Progress fringes her garments reaches now to where the Golden Gate swings back upon her hinges. Asia and Farther Indies are jut beyond, and the Orient of Europe is the Occident of America. And still from the silver aad the orange blossoms of cactus-fringed and .snow-crowned Mexico, northward to where the icebergs glitter against an Arctic sky, our pioneers are marching and toiling. In the track which their fierce feet are breaking our country is marching onward to her greatness. The army of civilization swells upon their pathway. Art, science, progress, the wealth of nations, the power and f$oj of the Republic follow. All ton or and all hail to those brave hearts who lead the vanguardl Tiie Railkoad. The shipment of a number of carloads of railroad tools to some point above Redding, is evident ly for the purpose of breaking ground before the first of December, as Con gress meets at that time, and can de clare the land grant forfeited,, on ac count of a non-compliance with the franchise grantee", which expired last year. The railroad company can hold the grant until the land is restored to the public domain, and if earnest in a desire to build the road, the govern ment will no boubt let the company have it, for a few years longer, other wise not. General Eli M. Barnum, a resident of Oregon between 1851 61, died at Salt Lake City on the 23d of Septem ber. During fits life in this State he resided in Salem, and was at the time Dcmocratic candidate for Governor of State." 'JSe organized the Odd Fellows as an order in this State, being a charter member of Cheraeketa Lodge No. 1. He was a law partnor of the late Hon. Jos. G. Wilson. The N. P. R. R. Co. has let the con tract for clearing and furnishing ties and limber for 100 miles of track from Lake Pen d'Oreille eastward, to Small Bros, of Walla Walla. The railroad company is about to construct another steamboat on Lake Pen d'Oreille to assist in the transportion of men and material needed in the- construction of the road eastward.
