HORI-OKS IN CI-ABM-STON. Extract from a Letter Written by Lady to her Ilrotlier In New York. Strange to say, the fever lias broken out in our neighborhood. Last night I could not .ulcep becauso of the screams of a mother, whose only child died before midnight in the houso op posite, lie is the .ourth of the fami ly. The others were adults. Next door, a beautiful young lady also has the fever. On Sullivau's Island and Mount Pleasant, heretofore exempt in other epidemics, it is worse than in tho city. Tho nephew of Mr. George V. Williams, our most prominent merchant, died on the island on Mon day. Alter he was laid out, a letter came for him from his betrothed, but it was too lato, and at bis mothers request, I placed it unopened, on bis bosom. He was tho color of an or ange. It is truly a fearful disease. Every car ana boat from here is quarantined. Even the interior towus areclosod against us. Truly we can only trust to Providence. A pall overhangs, and Pod knows the end. Our young men have to bo out all night, and every night guard the city.' Last Monday evtmine; tho Rad icals intended to have a torch light procession. Among tho transparen cies of which tho negroes boasted in advance were two ; one representing s white woman at tho feet of a negro, suppliant and debased ; tho other a white woman nursing a negro baby. Think of this 1 Would such a sight be endured in New York, or even Boston ? When I camo from the is land to have some wreaths mado for poor Dob, I never saw such excite ment. Old gray-haired men turned out resolved to shoot on sight any negro who dared to display this hor rible insignia. Troops aro stationed all over tho State. Gen. Hampton, with tears streaming down his face, exclaimed : "My God, wo aro in tho death throes, and fighting for our very existence." Mrs. (ten. has or- E;anlzod the ladies, and wo aro seini ng refreshments to tho young men who aro guarding our lives every night. God bless them, for our. only liopo is in their strong, brave, patient arms. Our city is a camp and it is tho knowledge that it is so that keeps the blacks in check. Just think of being shut up with yollow fever and insurrectionary negroes. If death camo to us in less objectionable form than through such agencios, how glad ly wo would covet it. The .'alnles Death. Professor Tyndall, in a tpcont holi day lecturo at tho lioyal Institution, speaks thus of tho' paliioss death by elaotricity : Franklin was twieo struck scnsolcss by tho shock. Ho afterward scut tho uiscuargo oi iwo largo jars inrougn six robust men ; they fell to the ground and got up agaiu Avithout kuowing whul had happened ; they noithor heard nor felt tlio disohargo. Pricstry, who mado many valuable contributions to electricity, received the discharge of two jurs but did not find it imiuliil. This cxperienoo agrees with mino. In tho llieatro of tho Royal Institu tion, and in tho presence of an audi cnoo, I onco received tho discharco of a battery of fifteen Leydon jars. Uu like Fiuuklin's six men, I did not fall but like uiem 1 loll nothing. 1 was simply extinguished for a sensible in torval. This may bo recardod as an expor imontal proof that pooplo killed by lightning sailor no pain. Tho measured velocity of eloetrcity is many thousand times greater than the measured velocity of seiiMatiou in tho norves. Hence tho electrical con cussion reaches tho center oflifo with out any possible announcement by the eyo or ear or any sense of feeling. Tuero is abundant evidence that death by a rillo ball traversing the ' brain is for tho same reason entirely - without consciousness or pain. IStit a . rillo ball is a tortoiso compared with the elcctrioal flash, The Hulnukotr coll plaoes artificial lightning in our bauds. If society must kill its members, let this instan taneous doom bo substituted for the slow torture and bruto violenco ol tho gallows. He. or hi In Public Hipeua.
