Oct. 7th, anrt was opened with a sermon by Rev. Thoma3 M. Boyd of Waitsburg, W. T., the retiring Moderator. This Synod embraces the State of Oregon, Washington Territory and Idaho, and is divided into three Presbyteries. Of minis ters -vit has thirty-four, and forty-eight churches, with a membership of about two thousand five hundred. About twenty-five of the mcmhers of the Synod were present, including some from the most distant churches; notably, Bcv. Ceo. L. Deffcn baugli fr.m Lapwai, Idaho, who traveled about 500 miles and consumed four or five days in reaching here. Also Kev. Tlios. J. Weeks from S-n Juan Island, whose journey hither required about four days. The Synod was organized by the election of Rev. II. P. Dunning as Moderator, and Revs. Anthony Simpson and Geo. R. Bird as temporary clerks. The report of the committee of arrange ments in regard to public services, etc., was adopted ami substantially carried out, and is as follows: Preaching on Friday evening by Rev. Geo. R. Bird of Seattle. On Satur day at 7:30 p. M. Synod resolved itself into an Interlocutory meeting and listened to the reading of narratives on the state of religion in the Synod and in the different Presbyter ies, and also to brief addresses by Rev. Dr. lindsley on the work in Alaska, and by Rev. (ieo. L. DeSettbMjn in regard to the mission among the Nez Perce Indians. From these rep irts it would appear that the outlook was never more encouraging. Between four and five hundred mcmhers have been added to the different churches in this Synod during the past year. Quite an addition has also been made to its minis terial force, and some live or six more minis ters are expected soon. On Sabbath the public services were of a most interesting character and largely at tended, the other churches very kindly giving way and joining in the services held by the Synod. In the morning a lare and appreciative audience assembled to listen to a sermon by Rev. Dr. Geary, who ahly dis coursed on the "constraining love of Christ." In connection with this service the sacra ment of the Lord's Snppcr was celebrated, and a goodly comj any of Christians from the different churches eat together at the Lord's table. In the afternoon several very interesting and suggestive addresses were delivered by Revs. Bovd. Hill. E. N. Condit and Bird to the children, youth, parents and w :kern assembled in the church at a synodieal Sunday-School meeting. At 7:30 in the evening the people came together ngain tillirig the Bouse to overflow ing, to listen to the Kev. Dr. Lindsley of Portland. His subject was "Tun Tongne of Fire," or the outpouring of the Holy Ghost on the day of pentecost. Showing it to be tiie great need of Ministers and churches throughout the land. Very feelingly and and effectively was his subject presented, holding the lar;-e audience in perfect quiet during nearly an hour. Aside from the regular routine of business the attention of the Synod, was given to sev eral matters which were of more than usual interest and importance. . In response to an overture trom the Presbyteries- of Oregon and South Oregon, the Synod consolidated the two Presbyteries under the name of the Presbytery of Oregon. The organiza tion of the united Presbytery was effected by the election of Dr. Geary as Moderator: Kev. E. N. Condit, Stated Clerk, and Rev. H. P. Dunning Temporary Clerk. The fol lowing permanent committees were also elected : Com. on Home Missions and Church Erection: Kev. A. L. Lindsley, D.D., Rev. E. R. Geary, D.D., and Edward Quacken bash, Elder. Com. on Foreign Missions and Publica tion : Rev. H. P. Duuuing, Rev. I. J. Condit and Elder E. C. Roluen. Com. on Freedmen and Ministerial Re lief : Rev. A. Simpson, Kebt. Robe and Elder Caleb Davis. Com. on Systametic Benificence : Rev. R. W. Hill, Rev. J. A. Hanna and Elder J. W. Crawford. Com. on Sunday Schools : Kev. J. V. Milligan, VVm. Wadhams and Elder Mr. Stowell. In response to an overture in regard to the better observance of the Sabbath from the U. P. Presbytery of the Pacific, and the Congregational Convention, Synod appointed a committee consisting of Rev. Drs. Geary and Lindsley and F. H. Wuitworth, Elder, to confer with a similar committee of the bodies above mentioned, for the purpose of making arrangements for a Sttte Sabbath Convention, or for taking such other action as may be deemed expedient. After the usual vote of thanks to the families for their generous entertainment, to the Com. of Arrangements for their ef forts, and to the several railroad and Bteam boat companys for favors extended the Synod .adjourned on Monday night after a long and busy, yet very harmonious and pleas ant session.
