Yamhill again has a jail full of pris oners, and wants 'another special term of the Circuit Court Walla Walla children were treated to a fine New Year's dinner, by a promi nent citizen of that place. There is a great demand for wood- choppers in the northen counties of Cal ifornia, at from $60 to $75 per month A. M. Smith, of the Buena Vista pot ter, died, last week; from injuries re ceived by the late railroad disaster, near Eugene. o- : ----j Joe NefT;' proprietor of a boarding boose at Drain's Station, shot a Mr. Livingston, the other day, inflicting a slight wound. Two' men, Wm. Allen and Thomas Moore, were drowned, last week, by the upsetting of a skiff, in the Coast Fork, near Eugene. The tBoard of State University Di rectors have secured a site for that in Btitntion, on the land of Mr. Christian, eaBt of Willamette street, Eugene., A Portland man went home, the oth er night, and found a strange pair of pants by the "bedside.''; His wife went back to her mother, - in Yamhill, on the morning train. . A man named Brace bas been tried and bonnd oyer, in Yamhill county, tor poisoning meat in J. Torrence's pantry, Brace loved Corrie," .she : was too young, the old man objected, and got strychnine in his cold lunch. him the Carthagea-. tiu mtruscea.' me management ui iue whole war; he was a sworn foe to the Romans, from his;childhood. ; When he "was very young,,"his father carried him to the altar, and caused him to take an oath never to hold friendship with the Romans, nor cease prosecuting, them until he or they should be no more. Hannibal was excelled by but few, as a military commander.- His courage in danger was exceeding great ; no fatigue or hardship could subdue his body, and no misfortune so severe as to break his spirit. It was mid winter when he re Bolved to cross the Alps. The tremen dpus bight and Bteepness of the craggy mountains, capped .with , snow,, that seemed to tower "amid the clouds, by na ture would seem to "defy the approach of mortal man. His army, amidst those mighty barriers," sank' down injdespon- dency j but, by his courage, he caused them to rally again, and the design was accomplished. True, courage was manifested in, the hearts of our Pilgrim Fathers They landed on the rocky Plymouth, weary and fatigued by the voyage, lightly armed, a scanty amount of provisons, no shelter to. protect them from the bleak and howling winds of winter, without means, without friendsand sur rounded by hostile tribes. But did those calamities cause them to despair ? Was it toil from morn , till - night; was it the tomahawk ; was it a blighted hope ; or a broken heart, 'aching at the recollec tions of loved ones left beyond the sea All these could not crush the bud of hope, nor cause these people to sink in despondency. Their courage was 'so great that they triumphed over all diffi culties that opposed their progress. Daily observations clearly demon strate to the student the great necessity of courage. When he is solving some principle in mathematics or the sciences. when almost the whole power - of the mental faculty is brought . into action if then he fail to accomplish the desired end, be is almost ready to give up in despair. Bat he resolves to strike once more." 'By renewed courage, patience and toil, he at lasts gains the victory, We should never forbear undertaking laudable pursuits because they are hard to .accomplish ! 1 ; - ' i . i '. Then be bold in spirit j be courage ous, andever despair j for when man's courage fails, he fails to meet success. It matters not how great his mind may be for comprehending mysteries ; it may be able to follow the ' planets, in their revolutions, ' construct the hidden laws of nature ; yet, destitute of courage, he would be like a leaf cast on the waters of the mighty deep, carried whitherso ever the waves may roll. - ' Discipuxo. . CHIXESE TELEGRAPHY. 1 Another problem has been solved They can now telegraph the Chinese language, to write which .requires some fifty thousand different characters. It has been solved in this way : A few thousand of , the characters most used are cut npon wooden blocks. Upon the opposite side of each block is its nam ber. Duplicates of such numbered blocks are at each telegraph station. The Chinese merchant selects the blocks which express the thoughts to be trans mitted. The operator telegraphs only the numerals designating those blocks, which enable the receiving operator to select similar blocks at this end of the line. The plan, though simple, is in genious. i,rKf : i - ' I, i i : I Bad Luck is simply a man with'his hands in his pockets and his pipe in his mouth, looking on to see how it will come out.
