In a published card she says: “ I have long thought, and I now know, that it is impossi ble for a medium to be absolutely strictly honest and get adequate remuneration for the time and trouble expended.” S anta A nna is seventy-seven years old, but is still erect ^nd slender, and his black hair black eyes yet preserve their original brill iancy. He is as fond of cock-fighting as ev er, but hasn’ t money to indulge in it as much as he would like. A lucrative opening for young ladies has been made by tbe decision o f an Indiana court that the fact of a girl being engaged to several gentlemen at once is no bar to her sueing each o f them for breach of promise. T hebe are three lady editors in California —Mrs. Russel, of the Santa Barbara Index, Mrs. Gordon, of the Stockton Leader, aud Mrs. Lynch, of the MondocinoDispatch, aDd they all publish Democratic papers. A C ompositor who substituted an “ m ” for “ w” in speaking of a lady troubled with “ swelling of the feet” got a head put on him. The rascal! J. Q. A. Brown fired his pistol at a man named Roberts, at Eugene last week, be. cause Roberts pulled the tail of Brown’s mule. A "d og case” in aju stiee’scourtat Jack sonville, last week, cost the plaintiff #134 and an attorney fee, and then ho did uot get his dog. . T h e flies are yet with .us, god -------- bless them. The Evening Journal Is informed that H. W. Scott has written a p>eech for Mr. Warren, and the latter gentleman is now engaged in com m itting tne same to m em ory. The meanest man in Am erica was a member of the last General Assem bly of Ohio. He bargained for board and lodging atthe United States Hotel, at Columbus, and arraigned that he was to pay fifty cents a meal, and whenever he was absent he was to bo credited that amount. He then hunted up some cousins in the vi cinity, an old schoolm ate, a man who had once courted the member’s wife, and sponged his living o ff them for the larger part of the session. W hen ne settled up with tbe hotel, on the day of .adjourn ment, the landlord was astonished to find that he owed his thrifty boarder seventy- six dollars, the amount credited him for absence aiMneals over that charged for presence at meals. Somebody wrote to the editor o f a coun try paper to ask how he would ‘ break an o x ? ’ The editor answered as follows: ‘ If only one ox a good way would be to hoist him , by means of a long chain attached to his tail, to the top of a forty foot pole forty feet from the ground then hoist him, by a. rope tied to his horns, to another pole.— Then decend on his back a five-ton pile driver, and if that don’ t break him, let him start a country newspaper and trust people for subscription. One of the two ways will do it sure,’ A country clergyman just recovering from the effects of a severe boil on his nose, stopped an urchin near Fort Green, yesterday, and asked him tbe way to the corner of Fulton and Clinton streets. Tne lad glanced at him suspiciously a moment and said: W ell, yer ueedu’ t go there, mister, there ain’ t no gin m ill on that corner. ‘ Yes, you may com e again next Sunday evening, Horace, dear, but’—and she hes itated. ‘ What is it, darling? Have I giv en you pain’ he asked, as she still remain ed silent. You didn’ t mean to I ’m sure,’ she responded, ‘ but next time please don ’ t wear one of those collars with the points turning outward they scratch so.’ Senator McDonald, of Indiana, is doing efficient service for the Democracy in the Ohio campaign. GIBBON’S ARTIES DESIRING TO ACT AS Agents, must accom pany their appli cation by a letter of recommendation as to character and responsibility, from and signed by the Editor of a newspaper pub lished in the town or county for which agent proposes to act. P E1SPESSARY, The Industrial Exhibition Company will furnish agents with Circulars etc., etc. Each newspaper publisher in the town where agent is located, w ill, as soon as agency is established, be given an adver tisement, advertising such agency and the Company, and fully explaining the plans, purposes and objects of the Company. Such advertisement will continue in such papers, (as long as agency is successfully conducted. The Industrial Exhibition Company is the first to adopt the plan so long in use by the European governments, of issuing bonds when the principal is made secure and not risked, and where there isachance for a large premium, an investm ent of §20 is sure to return to the investor §21—one dollar more than cost—anil the holder ot a §20 Bond, may obtain a premium, either of §c0, §100, §200, §500, §1,000, §3,000, §5,000, §10,000, §25,000 or §10",000. Tbe interest, which is ordinarily distributed to all ihe bond holders pro rata, is in this loan dis tributed by chance. The purchaser of a bond knows lie will receive back his in vestment, with a small rate of interest ad ded, and in consideration of taking this small rate of interest, he has a chance in the above named premiums, which are sim ply the distribution of interest on the whole loan. Each bond participates in four drawings each year, until it has drawn a premium, when it is surrendered, the premium paid, and the bond cancelled. The Industrial Exhibition Company, un der special charter, granted by the »cate of New York, is given authority to issue these bonds. The Legislature or ihe estate, recognizing the great benefits which wilt arise from the success of this enter-pus,, have exempted all the real estate ana pro perty of the Company from taxation and assessments lor five years, and has also conferred other great benefits. Every American who understands the purposes of this com pany will, of a neces sity, feel a pride in aiding it to a success ful termination. Each individual who buys a bond be comes an owner aud au interested party, and when he views the structure erected with his m oney, cun say: “ I aided to erect in our country , themosi magnificent Luil- ding the worm lias ever seen, a palace which, in truth represents the industry, energy and mechanical genius of tlie Am eiicau people.” The manufacturers and the inventors of America are peculiarly interested in the success o f tins enterprise, for the reason that it is to be their home, where all their inventions and manufactures can be ex hibited and sold.
