W e don’ t want any body to get scared by the heading o f this article. I f it should becom e frightful be fore it is finished, it w ill be the fault o f the subject, not our intention. W e d on ’t in tend to be personal, the subject wouldn’ t bear investigation in that way. Gossip is unconsidered talk about everything and everybody. There’s lots o f it, and various kinds. W e shall endeavor, in accordance with the modern rule o f “ how not to do it’ ’ m ake brief m ention o f the kinds we d o n ’ intend to refer to. The Editor is sick ! We don’ t intend to refer to that class o f gossip indulged in by the fem ale sex, where Mrs. Pegtop and Mrs. Whiffietree, who hate each other with forty-horse power, after meeting and kissing one another, sit down, and loving l y , sm ilingly and unctuously proceed to dem olish their fem ale acquaintances in the most approved stylo, until the listener would think he heard the only two excep tional females in the com m unity. The Editor is sick ! We don’ t intend to reG r to tho kind o f gossip indulged in by Mrs. Slippikins, who makes her weekly visits to gather and diffuse information with the regularity o f a weekly newspa per, and the genuine disinterestedness of a paripatetic philosopher. Dear old Mrs. Slippikins ! How interesting it is to know that Polig W om sley’s oldest daughter is not likeiy to get married to the feller th a t’s been runnin’ after her all winter— how Mr. Lallygag staid out ail one night, supposed to be drunk—or elsewhere—John Plifl'kins’ bay horse died o f the colic, and Sarah Ann Muggins’ last and least baby ha* got a doubie-tooth, and is now labor ing under a com plication o f chicken-pox, Whooping-cough and smufiles ! Unfortu nate Infant ! The Editor is sick ! We don’ t for a m o m ent refer to the kind o f gossip which takes place among a party o f men seated around a bar-room stove, when a pretty woman passes by. The choice language used in detailing the history o f everything to her discredit is a morceau that to be properly appreciated needs only to be heard. It is, however, like two drygoods drummers talking against each other, no body believes even what he says himself. The Editor is sick ! Don’ t understand us for us m om ent as referring to a kind o f gossip where you occasionally get into com pany with two or three fellow tr ivel- ers, and you have to do all the talking yourself. Thus, directing your conversa tion to one: ' “ Fine weather, sir !” “ Y es.“ To the next one— “ Looks like rain 1“ “ Yes.” To the other— “ I ’ ll bet it’ll snow in twenty minutes !” “ Yes.” The am ount o f information you would receive in this kind o f gossip is only equalled by your exasperating satisfaction at having had everything your own way. The Editor is sick ! The m ilk of human kindness coursing through our veins for bids us to m ention the gossip o f a group of men on a street corner as some profess ional man passes by. If a lawyer—“ Oh yes ! D—d smart feller—biggest rascal in the county, though. Throw o ff on you in a minute.” I f a doctor—“ Yes, pretty good doctor now , but lie filled m any a grave yard before lie Iear’nt liow to cure a bill- lous attack.” If'a minister—“ Oh, y e s , h e works for pay, denied good thing. Maj be a good man, but you see how it is witli Beecher ?” The Editor is sick ! Ho lias been getting better for som e days. He requested us to w rite a leader. W e have conscienciously tried ou r best, but find that after describ ing all the gossip we don’ t intend to write a bou t, the subject has “ give out.” If the E d ito r don ’ t have a relapse after reading th is, he m ay consider him self out o f dan ger. A D iscovery . —We were informed some time ago, that there were two Government detectives in our midst, spying out the per sons who had or are cutting timber on gov ernment land, or who were in posession of lumber made out of the aforesaid timber. Wo kept looking out for them, but didn’t see anything suspicious, until some time last week, when we saw two well dressed persons looking all over the town, at the houses and into the yards and makin g mys- ,V torious demonstrations with a tape line, I-„“ Alia I said we to ourselves—there’s they !'' 3 H We were about to rush off and inform the public, when wo met Smilax Smoothbnar, who knows everything, and he told us that they were Mr. George Woodard and Mr. J. J. Ecoffey, who were making a plat of the town and buildings for the use o f the Plioo- nix Insurance Company, o f Hartford. We Loved a sigh of rolief. Mr. Woodward has established an agency tor that Company here. Mr. Ecoffey is the agent.
