J T ill k r i u u l d i n C o n c e r t ! The old year has passed away In its turn, the new year hold« away, And may it* reign be equally good. To any year's in times great flood. The old year has had its harms. For fire has came with outstrecbed arms And swept man’s work o f years away, And left it thus for ns to-dav. Look at Chicago, so great,'so strong— Aides wide and many long, Destroyed by three nights fircy toil, And lett mankind to mourn and spoil; Look at Boston, equally great, Meeting with a same-like fate. Hundreds o f families left alone, Without bread, without a home. The many disasters at sea— Wrecked vessels, drowning mortals— O h ! may this year never see Likewise, in earthly portals. And wars too, we have seen, Indian wars, they have been— Captain Jack, with bis Modoc band, Caused to tremble this mighty labd; Now he, and our men, the best Warriors, lie at rest. Other things in the old year, Has caused us to drop many a tear. Let us pray that the new year May bring torth nothing so severe; But the good Lord will have bis will, Whether good, or whether ill To us it may seem, But the Lord with the best alone doth teem; So Jet it be with the new year, Let us bless the Lord with childlike fear. The Senate of the United States confirmed Caleb Cushing as Minis ter to Spain, in place of Daniel Sick les, resigned; after which, on the 9th, the President nominated him for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The telegraphic dispatches of the lOtk say it is probable that a stormy debate will take place on the confirmation of Caleb Cushing, as his nomination does not give satisfaction to the politicians in Washington. C. Hyde, of our city, was married to Miss Mary Par ker on Thursday evening last. A pleasant journey through life to the worthy young couple. Jan. 8th. The message of the President to the Senate, withdrawing the nomin ation of George H. Williams as Chief Justice, states that it is done at his own request. Williams remains in office as Attorney General, and the nomination of Col. Bristow for that position is in another brief message consequently withdrawn. W a s h i n g t o n . Jan. 7tli. To the President:— S i b : Y ou were kind enough, without my solicitation or any knowledge on my part that you contemplated such a thing, to nominate me for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Since that time the, flood gates of cal umny in all directions have been opened upon me, my abilities have been disparaged, my integrity brought iu question, and as it seems to me that the stage of public opim ion adverse to my appointment has been reached which might hereafter embarrass your administration and perhaps impair my usefulness upon the bench; with a perfect conscious ness that I have performed with clean hands and upright purpose all the duties of the various public offices to which 1 have been called, and trust ing to time and to a just public mind when better informed for my vindi cation, I respectfully usk you to with draw my nomination. The following resolution was offer ed by Hon. J. W . Nesmith and pass ed by the House of Representatives on the 8th inst; R e s o l v e d , That the President of the United States be requested, if not incompatible with the public service, to furnish the House of Representa tives copies of all correspondence between the different departments of the Government and the Peace Com missioners during the war with the Modoc Indiuns in Southern Oregon and Northern California, during the years 1872 and ’73; also copies of all correspondence with and orders issu ed to the military aut horities engaged in such war up to the period of the removal of the Modoc Indians from the States of Oregon and California. It is expected this resolution will lead to the exposure of numerous schemes of speculation on the Pacific coast. P aris , Jan. 9th. McMahon’s Ministry has resigned in consequence of its defeat in the Assembly. McMahon urges the members of his Cabinet not to retire. No further action has been taken. P a r is , Jan. 10th. The members of the Cabinet have agreed to accept the passage of a res olution on Monday to immediately resume the discussion of the bill for the appointment of Mayors, as a vote of confidence. M a d r i d , January 9th. The Cortes dissolved to-day, and new elections have been ordered. Bilboa is surrounded by Carlists. The assault on Cartagena was re pulsed with heavy loss to the assail ing column. P o r t - a d P r i n c e , Jan. 9th.
