On Tueaday evsning a de lightful re option wee tendered the delegates who hsd arrived, end they were given en opportunity to meet tbe local workers socially. Wednesday morning the reel work of tbe Convention wee begun a.a Jk si a sea with devotional exercises, wnicn were intersjietaed ell through tbe sessions. Tbe program wee a long one, end brought out fully tbe wonderful organ ization of the Union. There ie a spe- ial committee In ever department that can be thought of, aud a live Christian woman at tbe heed of it. Tbe builJing in which they met was tbe ediftoe of tbe Pint United Presby terian Church, which was handsomely decorated for the occasion. The even ing meetings, designed to be of a popu lar cbarecter, were held in the Pickwick Theater, end attended by immense au diences. Tbe address by Miss Willard, the President, on Wedneadey morning foreshadowed tbe real question, which was to excite tbe most debet e, end whose final settlement wes deferred until Saturday. Ska came out boldly for tbe Third Party end St. Joho, and was heartily applauded for it. The singing waa spirited, and was well led with a cornet by Mrs. Burt, of Maine. Reports were presented, most of tbetn in pamphlet form, on "Tbe Overthrow of tbe Tobacco Habit," by M. It. Reese, of Ohio ; Hygiene, by Mrs. Dr. J. H. Kellogg, of Michigan ; Literature, by Mies sTeHa Coltnan, New York ; Hered it; , Mrs. M. W. Duruett, M. D., of Illinois , Suppression of Impure Liter ature, by Mass Lucy J. Holmes, of New Hampshire ; Gospel Work among Lumberman, Mrs. R. Q. Peters, of Mtcbtgac. From tbe meeting at the Pickwick, Wedneadey evening, 500 people went awsy, unable to get into tbe bell. An interesting address of welcome waa made by Mrs, H. H. Wagoner, of St Louir, and telling ipeecnce were made by Mra. Clara Hoflman.of Kansas city, Mrs. Ed. Pitta Stevens, of Californis, end Mies F. E. Willard. On Thursday morning tbe first re port, after the aeeson of preyer, wes on the Work among Foreigners, by Mra S. P. Grubb. of Missouri, the heed of that department. This report showed that 30,000 pegee of German literature had been distributed during the yeer in twelve States and several Territories. The report of the corresonding secre tary, Mrs. C. B. Buel, of Connecticut, giving a rapid review of the work of tbe last decade, auaong other interesting facts, mentioned that temperance and kygicnie lews are now taught oompul sortly in tbe schools of New York Michigen, Vsrmont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The treasurer's report showed the receipts for the past year, 8.106 ; expenditures 6,581, leaving a balance on hand of $2,224. Tbe Superintendent of tbe Flower Mission department is an invalid, but her report was on hand, and was read by another, being received by a rising vote of thanks. The colored people were represented by the State superin tendent of this work in Indiana, Mrs. M. B. Cars, of Cbiosgo, on the Union Signal, whose circulation had increased thirty per cent during the yeer. Sev eral of the prominent workers were publicly presented with baskets of flowers in token of their devotion and success. During the afternoon session politics got into the discussion, and matters were lively. On Thursday evening the Pickwiok a a a m was again jamtned, and an overnow meeting waa held in the lower hall. Tbe principle meeting began with a Bible Reading by Mrs. Hannah Whit- all Smith, claiming that God is in the midst of their work, and whoever oppo- s it will be found to be fighting against God. Mrs. Foster's address was upon Moral Power, showing the advances that had been made in an en- lightened, Ohrutianized public senti- aient. The report on State Societies gave Pennsylvania the credit for or ganizing the greatest, number of unions, 180 during the year. Ohio was said to have contributed more money to the cause than any other State. The grand total of unions was stated by Miss Wil lard to be abouc 6,000. On Friday morning, Mrs. Governor Wallace, of Indiana, made her report on Franchise. She advised ber hearers not to bo deterred by what they called womanly modesty from knocking at thedoots of legislative bells this win ter, aud demanding any sort of fran chise the constitution of their State did not prohibit. The wide rescuing influ ence of tbe Union's work was shown in the resolution introduced by the Com mittee on Resolutions, calling attention to the proximity of the smoking com- partroont, Tbe resolutions also cover ed every department of ,tiTort, and called for more earnest action. Mise Willard was again elected pres ident, with muoh enthusiasm, and hor mother was informed of tbe notion by telegraph. On Saturday Miss Annie Gordon brought in a class to represent ber kitchen garden work. After show ing briefly whet their work wss, they presented to Miss Willard the e'egsnt set of ohine thry bed brought, snd the Convention Musd In siosinu Nearer my God to Thee. It is one of the few times when Miss Willard has been sur prised. There was a long debate over tbe Third petty question. It wee manifest early in the meeting that tbe senti ment of the body was overwhelmingly in favor of definite action, letters had been read from prominent raen, ploading , gainst any public commitment on this subject, and a brave stand against was msde by tbe minority, but it passed by e vote of 1 83 to 50, and then tbe Convention engaged in silent prsyer It wss not an effort for party politics but a conscientious action on tbe part of thoughtful, careful Christians. The vote waa taken by ayee end noes. On Sabbath morning the annual ser mon to the Convention van delivered by Mrs. Mary T. Lathiop, and many of tbe city pulpits wero occupied by delegates, Tbeir presence in St. Louis hss been a hleeaing. In the homes where tbey have been entertained, in their public discussions, and in all Oscar action there haa been manifest the presence of the Holy Spirit.
