Six of our buyers were in the European markets, returning home just before the outbreak of hostilities. The day following active warfare we received a cable from our London office stating that they thought it impossible for any foreign goods to get across the ocean. Upon receipt of this information we rushed 18 -buyers into the New York market, duplicating our foreign purchases. From August 1 until September 20 business was paralyzed in Europe. After mobilization freight began to move again, and 100,000 cases of merchandise were piled upon the docks of Rotterdam awaiting shipment to America. .
