A most en joyable meeting of llassalo Lodge. No. 15, I. O. O. F.. was held last Friday evening. After conferring the third degree on three candidates, a surprise was sprung upon the members present. G. W. dimming, P. G.. made a short speech, in which he stated that 30 years ago that day be was made a member of Hassalo Iodge. and, after telling the company of the pleasant and enjoyable years he had spent in fel lowship with his lodge brothers. Invited them to partake of refreshments he had provided. Mr. Cummlng received the con gratulations of the entire company. Meets With Stranob Accident. Dr. O. C. Klaney met with a strange accident yesterday morning. While on his way to his office in the I. O. O. F. building, Dr. Blaney suddenly was attacked by a spell of dizziness and fell unconscious to the pavement. Near-by residents picked up I he tincoiviclous doctor and carried him In. He received severe cuts about the face and head, and his nose was almost torn off. Dr. C. S. Seamann attended the injured man. who Is now resting easily at his home. Eighteenth and Clinton streets. The closing exercises of the Re liRlous School will take place at the Temple Beth Israel this morning at lOrJO o'clock. An Interesting programme will be presented by the pupils, followed by an address by Dr. Stephen S. Wise. The num bers by the pupils will include several essays, for which books have been offered as prizes. Membership Reacheh 700. Secretary E. C. Glltner announced yesterday that the' momoersnip of the Chamber of Commerce had reached the 700 mark, and that Tie confidently expected it would total 1000 by the first of next year. Nearly 60 mem bers have been secured within the last 14 days. A year ano the Chamber of Com merce had less than 400 members. Ralph Wright Passes Awat. Ralph Wright died at the home of his mother near Mount Scott Friday night. The youns man was 29 years of age. and he had been suffering for some time from stomach trouble. He leaves a mother and three brothers. The funeral services will be held today at 3 o'clock from Flnlcy's undertaking parlors. Childhood Was Kcng. Beautiful exer cises were held yesterday by the Milwau kie Grange for the children, childhood be ing crowned king of the day. The exer cises were under the auspices of Mrs. May Getchell. There was a large at tendance. The hall was Ailed with chil dren and babies. A Juvenile Grange is to be organized. Concerts for the Park. The subscrip tion for the park concerts is growing, and by the first of the week Park Commis sioner Meyer and Messrs. Brown, De Cap rio and McElroy will visit the principal business houses in the interest of the fund for the Summer concerts. It Is in tended to give the opening concert Sun day, July 1. A Christian Church was organized at St. Johns Friday night. Rev. Bruce Wolver ton. Rev. J. F. Ghormley. Rev. J. N. Nulion and Rev. E. N. Patterson, repre senting Portland churches, assisted in the organization. The new church has 25 members. Mrs. Sida W. Announcements have been made for an examination of applicants for the posi tions of drivers, hosemen and truckmen In the Portland Fire Department, to be held under the civil service rules at the City Hall, commencing June 30. at 9 o'clock A. M. The various tests will oc cupy several days, but all who wish to compete must hand In their applications before the' first day of the examination. The examinations cover arithmetic, copy ing, physical and athletic tests. No resi dence in Portland is required for those participating, and salaries of from J65 to J75 a month attach to the positions given successful candidates. Bert Hatward Arrested for Tres pass. a row growing out of trouble be tween Jacob Sauer. an East Side saloon man. and Bert Hayward resulted in the arrest of Hayward last night on a charge of trespass. Sauer was recently tried in the Circuit Court on a charge of assault and batter- on Mrs. Hayward and was acquitted. Sauer alleges that yesterday Hayward and others came on his property and demolished a cherry tree. He caused a warrant to pe issued, and Hayward was arrested yesterday. Mermaid Cantaloupes.
