Women of the Mount Tabor Home Training Cir cle are trying to devise a plan to keep the waiting stations on the Mount Tabor electric railway clean and decent. Time and again these stations have been cleaned and repainted, and notices post ed on the walls, but without much effect. The walls continue to be defaced with in decent writing. It is thought that if an example in the way of a heavy fine could be Imposed on the guilty ones It might have a deterring effect, but the difficulty is In detecting them In the act of defac ing the public waiting stations. Want Grand Avenue Improved. Many of the property-owners on Grand avenue, between Sullivan's Gulch and Belmont street, exclusive of the big fill, are anx ious that the improvement of that street should go forward. E. H. Virgil, a property-owner, said yesterday that at the present progress Grand avenue would not be paved this year. He said the property-owners signed for Warren's bitullth lc pavement, but that the Improvement Is being held up by Councllmen Sharkey and Kellaher on the ground that they want competitive bids. SIMMONS FOR SHERIFF Only Candidate of the Independent Voters of Multnomah County. The only nomination made by the Multnomah Independent Citizens, for any office, at the coming election. Is that of J. EL Simmons for the office of Sheriff. This nomination was made at a largely attended and enthusiastic meeting of voters as soon as it was known that the only other nominees for this office were controlled by certain banking interests that are obnoxious to the taxpayers of Multnomah County. The reason for the nomination of Mr. Simmons to this Important office Is found In the general belief that both Rob ert Stevens, the Republican nominee, and Thomas Word, the Democratic nominee, are controlled by the Ladd bank and that If either receives the office of Sheriff the Ladd bank will manipulate the finances of this county. It Is also reported and generally believed that If Stevens Ls elect ed. Word will be made his chief deputy. There thus appears to be a thorough un derstanding between the two Ladd candi dates for this office. Mr. Simmons has entered the race ab solutely unpledged. He is tied up to no bank or clique of bankers, and If the tax payers of Multnomah County want the office of Sheriff administered In the inter est of the taxpayers they should vote for J. B. Simmons.
