Younger generation going to the dogs? "The younger generation Is going to the dogs” I he parent generation Is prone to panic about young people, and always has. With a faculty for forgetting their own youth, they imagine that history has picked today’s young people as the gen eration that Is, at long last, really going to the dogs. As parents, teachers, and clergy, we have the responsi bility to accent the positive. We have much to recognize. The Neighborhood Youth Corps gave an example this summer. N.Y.C provided Incentive wages to hundreds of high school students In return for community, school and church work. Young people wanted to work, wanted to earn t h e i r way. This they demon strated In classroom s, gymns, c i t y parks, and community c l e a n - u p projects throughout Albina and the city of Portland. We must now move beyond summertime programs mean ingful national service opportu- n l t i e s for young Americans should be achieved. The Hes- burgh plan Is worth considering. STRAYHAND The Missing One A doctor in a small French village spent his life serving the people of the village. Many of them had no money to pay for his services. He continued to give of his services as If they were able to pay. After many years of services some of tlie townspeople thought It would be m o s t proper for them to do something special for the doc tor. The people of the village were contacted and told of the plans. It was a village noted for Its fine wines. Each person was asked to bring a small pitcher of his best wine and pour it In one of the barrels for tlie doc tor. The day came for the great e v e n t . The people were seen c o m in g all day pouring their wine into tlie barrels. When night came the doctor decided he would relax and enjoy some of the fine wines before he re tired. He tasted from the first barrel and found that it was only water. He tasted from each barrel and then discovered that each barrel contained water. It was discovered that most of the p e o p le had reasoned that his nelghlxir w o u ld bring wine. After all, they thought, who will know that 1 have failed to bruig wine and only brought a little pitcher of water In these large barrels of wine? Save the wine for myself and give the water to someone else. Something Is missing in our dally lives when we fail to do our part and assume that some one else will do It for us. It is erroneous to assume that some one else will do it for us. In our churches there Is always one missing l*elieving that no one will notice in so large a crowd. A recent c a m p a ig n was launched In the community to get citizens to register and vote. Many names are still missing from tlie registration list. Are you the missing one? Do you think your vote will not matter among so many? Any community, any program, any good cause Is only as good 9 :4 5 a .M 12 :00 Noon Sunday School Worship Service The Friendly Church - You ore oniy 0 Stranger once MCKINNEY TEMPLE CHURCH OF GOO IN CHRIST 1 7 3 7 N.E. Success o r f a i l u r e may sometimes I>e caused not by the inaction of those who are doing something t>ut by the actions of ttiose who are not doing their best. Tlie missing one Is tlie vital link be tween failure and success. When there is good to lie done, lives to be saved, empty life barrels to lie filled, hope to be restored and faith to be renewed do not let the missing one be you. The little good you do will not cause the tide to be turned overnight, but when each one does his part o f the good, tlie benefits we share together may turn the night into day sooner than you think.
