Craig, general passenger agent of the Union Pacific system at Omaha, formerly general passenger agent of the O.-W. R. & N. here, will be in Portland during the Rose Fes tival, accompanied by Mrs. Craig. They have not been in Portland for 15 years and never have seen the festival, nor have they ever driven over the Columbia river highway. They will be the guests of Mr. Mc Murray, who succeeded Mr. Craig here. Messenger Strike- Ends. Accord ing to the managers of the Western Union and Postal telegraph com panies, the strike of messenger boys, which developed Wednesday when a slight . reduction in pay was an nounced. Is practically ended. There were but four vacancies at the Postal last night and none at the Western Union, it was stated. Only a minimum of trouble grew out of the affair. one bicycle being smashed and sev eral tires being punctured by tacks strewn on pavements. Drink Salesmen Fined. On two eonsecutive days, Charles Derogatis and Sam Carlascio rotated In selling drinks of more than the legal voltage to government operatives. At that time they had a soft drink establish ment at 266 First street. When they appeared before Judge Bean to plead guilty yesterday, their place was closed by order of council. Darles, right-of-way agent for the Spokane, Portland & Seattle railway, has taken charge of the Chamber of Commerce building, which recently was ex changed for property on the east side. Eventually, the railway com pany will move Its offices there, but It will be about one year before the present lease expires. Marion Jackovich, who steered his automobile in an uncertain course while under the Influence of liquor last week, was fined $50 and ordered to stop driving for one year when he was adjudged guilty yesterday in municipal court. Judge Rossman took his driver's license and will hold it until a new year dawns. Frank W. Whitney paid S15 for reckless driv ing, and H. H. Bennett paid 325 for the same offense. Both drivers col lided with other machines on city streets. ; . . Woman Shoplifter Gets Six Months. Fannie Ortell, shoplifter de luxe whose name is known nationally to department store detectives, was sen tenced to six months in the peniten tiary yesterday by Circuit Judge Kavanaugh when she changed her plea of not guilty to guilty of a charge of shoplifting. She stole clothing from Lipman, Wolfe & Co. and was captured after an exciting chase . through city streets by a woman detective of the store. " Two Women Ask Divorces. Fred Louis Broughton left -his wife. Pearl Alma Broughton, saying that he had tuberculosis and had to go to Arizona. Instead of doing so, she asserted in a divorce suit filed yesterday in the circuit court, he went with another woman to Pocatello, Idaho, and got a job there as fireman on the Oregon Short Line. The consumption was camouflage, she insisted. May Lock ridge filed suit for divorce from Maurice Lockridge, charging cruelty. Free Dental Clinic. An interesting collection of Japanese stencils is now on exhibition in the central library. The stencils are the property of Mrs. W. L. Tennant and were loaned to the library for exhibi tion purposes. The art of stenciling Is old In Japan. It has been applied to the decoration of textile fabric for hundreds of years in that counry. Joseph Haburt, arrested for an al leged criminal attack on his two step-daughters, waived preliminary examination yesterday In police court and was bound over by Judge Ross man to the grand Jury under $1500 bonds. John Carter, whose theft of copper wire from the block system of the Port land Railway, Light & Power com pany near Lents put the signals out of commission, was sentenced to six months in the county jail by Presid ing Circuit Judge Kavanaugh yester day. Carter changed a plea of not guilty to -guilty. The offense is a felony under a special statuta. Sheep Dip Drinking Fatal. Walter Sclbor. a shoemaker, 48 years old, is at St. Vincent's hospital recovering from sheep dip poisoning. He drank a quantity of the poison at his home, 140 Russell street, Wednesday night. He denied to hospital authorities that it had been taken with suicidal intent. Vacation Hazards. Numerous ac cidents reported to traffic department during holidays last week end.
