The waers of the wrecked steamer State of Washington, which sank follow In? an explosion In her boiler room several months ago, were practical ly absolved from paying any damages by a decree banded down yesterday by Judge Wolverton in the United f-tates district court. The Shaver Transportation company, the owner, was adjudged entitled to the protec tion of an act of congress that limits the liability of the company to the value of the ship after it is wrecked. One life was lost in the explosion. J. W. Shaver tated yesterday that the vessel was so badly wrecked that it would not pay to salvage it and that therefore it was considered value less. Mr. Polsow Defies He Is Knw. Alex Poison, president of the Poison lagging company of Hoquiam, "U'ash., recently made a visit to Portland and in a news note of hia presence in the city it was stated that he was connected with the Inman-Poulson Lumber company and he was referred to as the king -of the logging in dustry at Grays Harbor. i-Ir. Poison strongly objects to being classed as a king of any sort and in a letter recently received by a friend in Port land states that he is just an "every day logger" and has no connection with the local lumber firm. Jefferson Plat Postponed. Out of respect to iliss Maud Ferguson, Jefferson high school teacher, who was killed by an automobile Tuesday, members ot the January ("21) class yesterday voted to postpone presenta tion of their clas play one week. The play, "It Pays to Advertise," was to have been given tomorrow and Satur day nights and several hundred tickets are in the hands of patrons. The play will be given and the tickets honored on Friday and Saturday nights, December 17 and 18. At the Evening Service on Sunday last at the Church at Portland, 283 Stark street, of which John G. Lake is overseer, Mr. J. A. Hicks gave public testimony that he had suffered from a severe form of blood poison ing in his "arm, that the physicians insisted upon an operation to remove the arm. He refused, came to Dr. Lake's healing rooms, the prayer, of faith was offered and in less than a 'week his arm was perfectly restored. Adv. C. K.vapp Reappointed. Fred C. Knapp. president of the Peninsula Lumber company, has bean reap pointed as a member of the commis sion of public docks. Mayor Baker made the reappointment prior to his departure for California and the city council yesterday confirmed the ap pointment. Mr. Knapp's term expired on December 7. He probably will take office at the next regular meeting of the dock commission. Children of School Age 63,410. County School Superintendent Alder son yesterday reported to the county commissioners results of the school census of 1920, and the share of funds to be levied on this basis. He said there are 63,410 children between the ages of 4 and 20 in the county neces sitating a levy for $634,100 for grade schoois and for J20.153.08 for high schools. Doctors to Have Meeting. All physicians have been invited to at tend the regular meeting - of the Portland academy of medicine, which will be held tonight at the Multno mah hotel. A resume of the past year's work will be given by the president. Dr. N. W. Jones. Papers will be presented by Professor George A. Olson, Pullman, Wash., and Dr. G U. Moore. Portland. Much bed clothing, table linen and wearing ap parel were stolen some time Tuesday from the home of Mrs. M. Gregg, 910 j yesterday to the police detective bureau. .xne prowlers jimmiea open a downstairs window. At the restaurant of G. L. Roseline, 227 Madison street, thieves gained en trance through a rear window and stole $100 in cash, the proprietor reported yesterday. They also took a revolver. A fur coat was the loot taken by thieves who gained entrance to the home o M. C. Ram during the absence of the family, it was re ported yesterday. Knowlton Appeals Fail. The ap peal of George E. Knowlton and his brother, Jerry, from the decision of the-United States district court here has been fruitless, according to the verdict of the higher court as received in Portland yesterday. The Knowltons were convicted of transporting two loads of whisky, brandy and gin, in violation of the Reed amendment, and sentenced to serve six months in the county jail. Mrs. Florence Knowl ton, wife of George Knowlton, was arrested at the same time. They will have to serve -their sentences. Policemen Mat Be Sued. Mrs. Robert W. Hedderly. widow of the alleged bootlegger who was shot and killed several months agoin a raid, has petitioned the United States dis trict court for permission to sue William D. Morris and Earl M. Jack son, Portland police officers, for 12000 damages each. This is a civil suit similar to those filed by the widow against the federal operatives who were concerned in the death of her husband and which were transferred frpm the state district to the federal court. Case Complicated One. Judge Wolverton of the United States dis trict court has granted the attorneys in the case of David Morgan, as trustee for Joseph Morgan, against the Clear Lake Land &. Irrigation company, the Wapinitla Irrigation company and some 60 water-users of central Oregon. 30 days in which to file their briefs. The hearing, now concluded, proved to be one of the most complicated affairs in the his tory of the local court. It will take considerable time to transcribe the evidence. Litigants Settle Case. The fed eral suit instituted by Harry Kosel, E. C. Larson, G. W. Ballou and C. A. Ordway against the Columbia Pacific Shipping company and Brown & Mc Cabe, stevedores, was ordered dis missed yesterday by Judge Wolver ton. Attorneys stated in court that a financial settlement had been eTfected. Securities Are Offered. The Port land ' branch or the federal reserve bank yesterday announced two new Issues of United States treasury cer tificates, now available to the public at 6 per cent interest for one-year notes and 5. per cent for six months' notes. Both are dated December 15, and are in denominations of $500 each. Bond Dealers Hear Talk. Bond dealers of Portland met at luncheon in the Benson hotel yesterday and heard an address on Canadian em bargo conditions by H. A. Ross of Victoria. Local dealers are proposing to organize for closer relationship in promotion work and the luncheon was along that line. Rotal Engineer to Speak. Cap tain Edmund L. MacNaughten, recent ly with the Royal engineers in the British army, is to be the speaker at today's luncheon of the Portland Press club. Music and an address by wireless telephone featured the programme put on by the Oregon Institute of Technology of the V. M. C. A. at the luncheon of the Ad club at the Ben son hotel yesterday afternoon. By means of the apparatus of the school the music and the address were carried without wires from the Y. M-. C. A. building to the hall where the luncheon was held. A song by Walter Jenkins, instrumental music, ar.d an address by Walter Haines constituted this part of the pro gramme. Various phases of the work which is being, done by the Oregon Insti tute of Technology were related y speakers. The school was declared to be the largest in the state, bar ring none, by H. W. Stone, nead or the Y; M. C. A. He related briefly Its growth from a small beginning to the present institution in which commercial and technical courses of various kinds are given leading to arious degrees such as are given by otne.r standard schools. Mr. Stone was Introduced by Will iam M. Ladd. Other speakers in cluded L. G. Nichols, In charge of th educational work of the school; Will iam Whitfield, Edward L. Clark, K. A Nagley R. R. Robley, Fred Vogler, Seth .Leavens, Thaddeus W. Veness and L. R, Wheeler. There was an exhibit illustrative of the work of the institution.
