An appeal taken by the Knowlton brothers, alleged bootleggers, to the United States circuit court of appeals will be heard in Portland by that tribunal starting this morning. United States Circuit Judges Gilbert and Hunt of the court of appeals at San Francisco are in Portland for the annual fall term of that court. United States District Judge Wolverton will sit as the third member of the apr pellate court. The Knowlton case is tho only one to be heard during the session in Portland. The Knowlton brothers have been arrested and con victed on several occasions lor alleged bootlegging. GRAND JURT HAS Bia WORK AHEAD. More than 100 liquor violations will tie investigated by the federal grand Jury, which has been summoned to re-convene Monday, October 4, it was said yesterday at the federal build ing. Deputies are now gathering data in a record-breaking number of liquor cases for presentation to the jurors. The grand Jury was last in session in June when the shipyard investigation was started. "Whether or not this investigation will be con tinued by the present grand jury has not been determined. COLONEL, CROSSLET TO ADDRESS EX- Soldiers. As the first of a little series of political talks. Colonel James J. Crossley will speak tonight at 8 o'clock at the Knights of Colum bus service club. 243 Couch street. There will be music and motion pic tures. Tonight's talk will be devoted to republican principles. On Sunday night a speaker will be provided by the democratic forces of the city. On an evening of next week It is planned to stage a debate between rival cam paign speakers. Saltalamacchia Gets Nine Months. Nine months in the county jail was the sentence received by Johji Saltal amacchia from Circuit Judge Morrow yesterday when he changed his plea of not guilty to guilty after the prosecution had completed its case gainst him before a jury. He was accused of assault on his wife, cut ting her across the face with a knife during an altercation. The wife's divorce suit is scheduled to be heard by Judge Morrow Thursday. Suit to Cancel Citizenship. Suit to cancel the citizenship papera of Victor W. Ltlja, a native of Kinland, was filed yesterday in federal court by Assistant United States Attorney "Veatch. The government is seeking to cancel the man's citizenship be cause of his alleged un-American tendencies. He served six months in the county jail during the war for a violation of the espionage act. He is a resident of Tillamook county. Sheridan Waives Examination. Paul Sheridan, former secretary ot the "outlaw" switchmen's union at Chicago, who was Indicted for an alleged violation of the Lever act, waived preliminary examination yes terday and consented to return, to Chicago for trial- without a legal fight. Sheridan was arrested in Portland several days ago. A deputy United States marshal will return with him to Chicago today. Armt Deserters Arrested. James Dorsey and Bob Thomas, both - ad mitted deserters from the army at Camp Lewis, were arrested yesterday by department of justice operatives for the alleged theft of an automo bile at Tacoma which they are said to have driven to Portland. They are held at the county jail in default of bonds pending a grand jury in vestigation. Prisoner -Agrees to Removal. L S. Dean, alias L. G. Knox, alleged automobile thief, yesterday agreed to his removal from Portland to Shreve port. La., where he is under federal indictment for automobile thievery. Dean is alleged to have stolen an automobile in Shreveport and trans ported it to Portland in violation of a recent federal statute. He was ar rested last week at Astoria. All Knockers Invited. Today will be business and knockers' day for the Portland realty board and all knock ers are invited to attend the regular weekly luntrheon of the board at the grrill room of tho Portland hotel at noon. The luncheon programme will be devoted to business matters and to the hearing of suggestions from members for the betterment of the association. Chinese Thtsician Arrested. Dr Frank Leo, a Chinese physician of 66'i Sixth street, was arrested yes terday by federal agents charged with selling- cocaine and morphine in violation of the Harrison narcotics act. It is alleged he sold the drugs to Krank Schultz, a restaurant worker, iicriultx also was taken into custody. "With but one case on appeal, the circuit court of the United States court of appeals will convene for the ninth circuit today in the old postoffice building. The courtroom of Judges Wolverton and. Bean has been placed at the disposal of the court, which constitutes Circuit Judges Gilbert, Portland; Hunt, San Francisco and District Judge Wolverton. The case of Qeorge E. and Jerry Knowlton. convicted of violating the Reed amendment in transporting liquor from California to Oregon will come up. After adjournment, tomorrow night, the judges will leave for the October term, at San Francisco. Students Take Flights. Ten mem bers of the Reed college student body and ' faculty took an airplane trip Wednesday afternoon. Despite the bad weather Pilot Mckenzie gave the novices a 1-o-minute flight, doing an Immelmann, a tail spin and a stiff spiral. 1 Miiss R. Compton, college librarian was the first passenger. The others were Ruth Chambers, Calista Eliot, H. Bronson, T. Brockway, H. Graham, E. Rothwell, A Lindstrom, J. Hamilton and A. Gehri. Mr. Hamil ton took photographs of the college and of the city. Man's Relatives Sought. From Maekay, Idaho, a letter has been sent to - Portland seeking relatives of Emanuel Frank, who died in that town last Friday following an opera tion for appendicitis. The letter, which came-to the Meier & Frank Co., Is in the hands of the police. The writer, a Mackay woman, said Mr. Frank had spoken of having a cousin in Portland and authorities of the town are anxious to locatei this per son " i Yesterday's Rain Storm caused thel price of meat to drop. Municipal Judge Rossman yesterday "nicked" five speeders and traffic violators who appeared before his court. W. H. Morrison. $10; K. Fiyinars. $10: O. Austad, $7.50, and F Dunn, $7.60. . New Infantry Division Coming. Vancouver barracks soon will be gar risoned by the 32d infantry, succeed ing tne 1st infantry., according to news received yesterday by the local recruiting office of the United States rmy. The organization is at pres ent at Camp Kearney, Cal. The 1st infantry has been ordered from Van couver to Camp Travis. Tex. Realization League- to Picnic. The Realization league will hold its monthly basket picnic in the com munity house at Peninsular park this evening. After a lunch dinner at 6:30 o'clock a half hour will be spent in singing from the Realization song book. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Clifford will assist in the music. Mayor Issues Fair Proclamation. Ar rangements have been made for minute men to appear in Portland churches the next two Sundays and for a canvass of the city for .cloth ing and funds. Knights to Go to The Dalles. A delegation of Portland Knights of Columbus will go to The Dalles to help initiate candidates into the Knights of Columbus organizaton of that city on Sunday. The local knights will leave tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock, under charge of District Deputy Hanley. State Deputy Peare will have charge of the initiatory ceremonies History op Terminal Given. Municipal terminal No. 4 was cited as one of the big factors responsible for the development of Portland a3 a shipping center by City Attorney LaRoche, who gave the address at the Progressive Business Men's lunch eon held at the terminal yesterday noon.
