EXECUTIVE GOOD FIGHTER Imputation as Campaigner Already Made Robert X. Stanfield to Introduce Speaker. Robert N. Stantield, republican nom inee for United States senator, will introduce Governor Hardine of Iowa at the Hardng-Coolidjre ratification rally at the auditorium Saturday nipht. "We . are getting splendid reports on the ability of Governor Harding as a campaigner," said Chairman Tongue. "He made one of the best speeches at the Chicago convention nominating Governor Llowden. Men who kow Governor Hardng say that as a speaker he rivals the candidate for president himself." Chairman Tongue will preside. Gov ernor Harding will be met at the union station by a reception commit tee of republicans and former Iowans. The latter are taking great interest in the coming of the governor of their former state and they are planning to attend the rally in force and also to sing as a number during the even ing the Iowa state song. "Where the Tall Corn Grows." Before the arrival of the speaker, beginning at 7:3u P. M W. R. Boone will play several numbers on the organ. Solos and campaign songs by quintet3 will liven the programme. Invitations to attend the rally have been sent to all republican clubs and to the republican editors of the state. Republican clubs of neighboring coun ties are planning to send large dele gations. M.AXY MEETINGS AXXOUXCED Various Issues to Be Discussed by Well-Known Speakers. Nine meetings by republican clubs will be held tomorrow evening to celebrate Constitution day. Speakers will discuss the constitution of the United States' and the league of na tions, as advocated by the democrats, showing how it would affect the con stitution. The various clubs have provided interesting entertainment. The meetings are to be held under the auspices df the republican county central committee and will mark what is considered the initial move of the campaign to swing Oregon for Harding and Coolidge. O'Brien, republican state com mitteeman from Clatsop county, brought the news to Portland yester day that the Clatsop county republic an committee had rented the Sunset theater in Astoria for. its political headquarters for the rest of the cam paign. It is located on Commercial street, has plenty of display space for lithographs and banners in front and has seating capacity for 500. Or dinary political rallies will be held there. The theater is equipped with a motion-picture machine, on which slides and films may be shown. Charles W. Robison, formerly of Portland, has offered his services as a speaker. Otto Krickson. former dis trict attorney, who recently returned from the front, has volunteered to speak through the county on the league of nations from a soldier's standpoint. The manager of the coun ty campaign will be "Tick" Malarkey, also a former service man. "We are gotng to make a lively campaign in Clatsop county and are . going out after the votes as if we needed one more and had to nail that one before night," said Mr. O'Brien. "The democrats are down-hearted in Clatsop county. They have good rea son to be." Malheur Republicans Active. "Malheur county has a live repub lican club," said Representative P. J. Gallagher of Ontario. Or., while mak ing a report at republican state head quarters in the Morgan building. "We have members in every precinct in the county who will assist the county chairman and the precinct committeemen to carry on the cam paign. We are determined to carry the county for the entire republican ticket." Mr. Gallagher is president of the club and Arthur Means is secretary. Cox's Throat Fixed t'p. On the advice of Dr. Charles T. Chamberlain, Governor Cox was treated for laryngitis while in Port land by J. C. M. Ironside, physio therapeutist. Dr. Ironside accom panied Governor Cox to Salem to assist in getting the candidate's voice in condition for speaking. Grant Club Reorganized. The V. S. Grant republican club, which has been reorganized, will hold a meeting Saturday, September 25. M. G. Griffin is president of the club and Ray Haldermann is secretary. COLLEGE GIRLS ELECTED Willamette Chooses Y. W. C. A. Officers for Semester. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY, Sa lem, Or., Sept. 15. (Special.) Miss Dean Hatton, a sophomore from Spo kane, Wash., yesterday was elected secretary .of the campus Young Wom en's Christian association, to fill the vacancy caused by the non-return to , echool of Miss Laura Shipley, named for the position at the spring election. Miss Marjorle Flegfel, sophomore, of Portland, was elected chairman of the restroom committee to succeed Miss Faerie Wallace of Spokane, who like wise will remain out of the university this semester. BIG ENROLLMENT ASSURED Willamette Registrar Confident of Sew Attendance Record. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY, Salem, Or., Sept. 15.- (Special.) More than 300 students had enrolled when the administration offices closed on the second day of registration. Most of the freshmen on the campus have completed their enrollment, but upper classmen have not yet signed up for their classes, and by tonight when registration will bo practically com pleted, the registrar is confident that a new attendance record will be made. The football turnout is increasing in size daily, several of last year's men having returned to the campus today. Dining service was begun m the new women's dormitory yesterday, and In a few days, according to Dean Frances E. Richards, the completed rooms will be allotted to the young women and residence will be taken up there also. BRIDGE BUILDERS HALTED False- "Work for'' Xortli Santiani Structure Washed Out. ALBANY, Or., Sept. 15. (Special.) The county courts of Marion and Linn counties probably may not be able to complete the new steel bridge across the IS'orth Santiam river at Mehama this year, as a result of high water in the river this week, which washed out the false structural work. The work had progressed to the point where the bridge was ready for the steel, but with the rising water and damage done it may be impossible to reconstruct the false work this season. The ferry now operated pending the replacing of the old wooden bridge will continue in serv ice until the new bridge is ready for use. ALBANY CHIEF TO RUN Candidates for Major and Recorder Arc Xot Yet Out. ALBANY, Or., Sept. 13. (Special.) John Catlin, chief of police of Al bany, will be a candidate for re-election, and he is the only candidate who has appeared thus -far for any city office here. Chief Catlin's petitions were placed in circulation yesterday. L. M. Curl, who is completing his thi.rd term as mayor', has announced that he will net be a candidate for re-election. L. ti. Lewelling. city re corder, is the nominee of both par ties for district attorney of Linn county, and will not be a candidate for re-election to his present office. No candidates have appeared thus far for either of these offices. Mclhodists Meet Today. ALBANY. Or., Sept. 15. (Special.) The district conference of the Free Methodist church of the Salem dis trict will convene tomorrow at the Lakeview church, eight miles east of Albany, and will continue until Sun day, when it will be concluded with a day full of special services.
