Output for Year Will Total 6,091,259 Pounds. .13,300 COWS IN COUNTY Cleanliness Is Rale and Dairies Are Modern In All Respects. Herds Always Improving. Twenty-five cheese factories In Tillamook county are busy turning out daily their quote, of cheese to sup ply the demand of the markets of the cast, the south and the west. In ad dition to the regular output the fac tories are preparing to exhibit some of the biggest checsees ever shown at the state fair. One now ripening in the Holsteln creamery, according to J. Rupp, president of the creamery, will weigh ciose to 600 pounds, and perhaps even bigger ones will be ehown. Carl Haberlach, manager of the Til lamook County association, in his re cent report showed that the county has been able to make 6,091,259 pounds of cheese in a year and that the output this year will be even greater. Tillamook Earns J231.O0O. Tillamook creamery, In he town of Tillamook, last year made 719,683 pounds of cheese, using 6,117,821 pounds of milk, and the financial re turns to the creamery amounted to $231,900. Maple Leaf came second with 676,683 pounds of cheese for the year. The factories are scattered throughout the county, which is rich in pasture lands, where tho cattle graze. But grass alone never Is considered sufficient diet for the Tillamook cows. A large amount of mill feed, concen trates and feeds that are expensive is added, even when the grazing is at the best. Tillamook county is re garded as an ideal dairy locality. Coos county, also, is coming to the fore, and before long will be doing its part toward making Oregon famous as a dairy state. Cleanliness la Rule. The cheese factories of Tillamook take the output of a lare number of dairies, and make work and income for hundreds of families. Quality is the watchword and cleanliness is the rule. Back of all the rigid rules and the statistics showing success is a fine spirit of co-operation all along the line. Farmers, dairymen, cheese makers, officials and all workers co operate. The cheese factories are kept absolutely clearly as attested to not only by officials and inspectors, but by tho visitors who frequently motor to the beaches and who stop to Inspect the creameries and watch the mysteries of turning milk into cheese. Great vats, shining and spotless, are used In cheesemaking. Men dressed .11 in white cut the cheese, mold It, press it into the round metal con tainers that, lined with cheesecloth, are responsible for the uniform form and size- Modern machinery is used In every one of the 25 factories, and uniformity is assured. 13,300 Cows in County. To Insure strict sanitation the coun ty dairy and food commiss'oner visits the dairy farms and inspects the barns and milk houses. His report ehowed nearly 13,300 dairy cows in the county, and this number has been materially increased this year. V. W. Christeneen's job is to Inspect and grade all the cheese so that none gets by if it isn't first class. In addition to upholding standard In the factories and on the farms with regard to sanitation, the dairy men of Tillamook are constantly im proving their herds. There is some lively rivalry among the Jersey, Hol Etein and Guernsey breeders' associa tions, and this merely serves to stim ulate a desire to get the best in cat tle, thus assuring good m'lk and other products. Jack Rupp recently bought a new bull, Hollywood Lillith Adven turess No. 254320, which he pur chased from Hollywood farm for $2000. All Barns Are Modern. This is an example of the enter prise of the men of the county. The Seals dairy farm has a new barn in which several fine Holsteins are on test. The most modern stalls and sanitary appliances are used in this as in all the county's barns. The dairies are beauty spots, clean attractive, with fine hard-surfaced roads on which to haul the milk to the creameries. The factories are lo cated, generally, by the roadside, con venient to the patrons, and often sur rounded by clomps of bushes or trees or by green velvety meadows which are seen fine herds of cattle. The names of the dairies are not mis leading. They suggest an ideal land Among them are Cloverdale, Maple Leaf, Alder Vale, Fairvlew, Cold Springs, Clover Leaf, Pleasant Valley and Ked Clover. . With the distinction of being the largest and most complete merchant marine cargo training chip in the world, the SSOO-ton steel Bteamshio Hollywood of the recruit ing service of the United States shipping board will sail from Seattle Monday night, beginning her maiden voyage. It is to be operated on regular schedule as a cargo training ship -between Seattle, Hawaii and San Francisco by the recruiting service of the United States shipping board. Freight for the vessel will be furnished by Alex ander and Baldwin, agents for the Mat son Navigation company. Making her first appearance In Seattle harbor the Nippon Yusen Kaisha steam ship Toyama Maru arrived here last even ing, bringing a large cargo of oriental merchandise for Pacific coast and eastern business concerns. According to advices reaching the offices of Dodwell & Co., the Blue Funnel liner Myrmidon is about to make her first visit to Puget sound. The Myrmidon, accord lng to present schedule, is due to load here in Octobr. The Blue funnel liner Ixlon sailed from Yokohama September 1 for Puget sound and is expected here during the week. She has a full cargo of oriental products for discharge here and at British Columbia ports. Outward she Is scheduled to sail from Seattle, October 13. PORT TOWKSEND, Wash., Sept. 12. (Special.) After loading: a carpro of coal at Union. B. C. the motorship Pacific shifted to Seattle today, where she will take a small consignment of general freight and then she will sail for Norway. This will be the first cargo of coal ever taken from the Northwest to Norway. The Blue Funnel steamer Myrnerdef, In the service of Dodweil & Co.. will make her first call on Puget sound In October, loading at Seattle for Liverpool. After being in Alaska waters einee July 1?. chasing fish trap pirates, the United States Rothweil of the Eagle submarine chaser type, is returning to Puget -sound; She is expected to arrive Tuesday. The schooner A. F. Coats shifted yester day from Port Blakeley to Seattle, where she will be given a general overhauling and have one or two new 'masts stepped. ASTORIA. Or.. Sept. 12. (Special.) The steamer Steel Worker arrived this morning: from New York and proceeded to Portland. The British steamer Tannenberg, which is discharging: ballast at the port docks, will leave for Portland tomorrow morning. The steamer Abcrcos arrived from Port land this morninir and went to Knapoton to load 1,000.000 feet of lumber for the orient. The "British stea-mer Pilar de Larrlnaga, with grain from Portland, sailed last even ing for Europe. The British pteamer Minnie De Ltr rinaga arrivea from Baltimore this aft ernoon en route to Portland. The steamer Meriden arrived this aft ernoon from the west coast via San Pedro en route to Portland. The steam schooner Saginaw with th barge Charles Nelson in tow, carrying cargoes of lumber from Prescott and West port, Bailed this afternoon for gan'- Fran cisco. The steam schooner Ryder Hanlfy, with lumber from Weatport, sailed ' for San Pedro today. The new steamer West Cannon, SSOO tons, launched here August 'JO, has been chartered by M. H. Houser ot Port land to proceed to the Columbia river and load wheat and flour for the United King dom. She receives a rate of $28 per ton. After discharging, the steamer Water- bury, which . arrived Sunday from the east coast, will go on berth here '.o load for Hamburg under charter to Williams, Dimond & Co. Silver sand for use in making bottles nd g!at:s formed the principal part of the cargo of the Norwegian motorshtp George Washington of the Norway Pacific inc. which arrived late today from Ohrlstiania. The shipment amounts to 9100 ons and was loaded In bulk at Antwerp. Other Items in the motorship's manifest are &12 bundles of baskets, 342 packages of machinery and 400 bales of hops. The George Washington will discharge on the Oakland side of the bay. Results) at any other, irrigation farming experiment station In the United States are not applicable to the Hermiston project in this state or to the 275,000 acres of similar irriga ble lands In Oregon, of which it is a part, according to James T. Jardine, director of the Oregon Agricultural college experiment station. Director Jardine has been on the Job but a short time, but has inspect ed the. plans and work of the central station and all the seven branch sta tions except that at Hood River, which he will visit the latter part of this coming week. He is now at the Astoria branch attending the annual lleld-day exercises. Good Farming Aim. "The Hermiston branch was origin ally established with the idea of de veloping a commercial horticultural district of the Umatilla project," he explained, "but results have shown that this Is not the most profitable type of agriculture for the district. ln-ding the most profitable crops to grow ,the best varieties and" the best irrigation, and cultural methods, and more especially the best disposition to make of the crops, is the major problem awaiting "solution." Many reasons why the policy of growing vast crops of hay each year and marketing them' outside is not best were pointed out. The leading reason is that it is not good agricul ture. The profit in returning the material taken in crops in the form of manure from livestock to which it was fed was shown as follows: A five-year average production of alfalfa on unmatured lands was 3.83 tons per acre. On lands given eight tons of manure per acre the averag was 5.16 tons of alfalfa per acre. With the hay at $15 a ton the value of the manure is $2.49 per ton. First Experiments Closed. "We may well consider the first dec ade of experiments closed," said the director, "and turn to the new view of "the future. These problems of crop production, water duty and distribu tion and most profitable use of crops in livestock feeding, although to be worked out on a project of only some 27,000 acres, are applicable to ten times the area in Oregon alone. "The data needed do not exist and are not being developed In any other station." Assembling the findings of the eastern " Oregon branch station at Union and making them available to producers in that and other districts of Oregon will be a most important function of experiment station work. A vast store of information of great value to producers has been developed at this branch station, and strong ef fort is being put forth to make neces sary parts of It available this fall. Burns "VVorka Irrigation. Established mainly as a dry-farm-ng sta-tion, the Harney branch at Burns has developed irrigation farm ing as well. Irrigation by small pumping plant and by gravity has stimulated a great deal of interest in irrigation possibilities among the farmers of the district. Twenty-three of the original 80 acres were farmed to a great variety of crops in differ ent rotations under irrigation this year. Soil fertility, duty of water trials and water distribution were considered. The pear-blight control work of the southern Oregon- station at Talent has reached the point where the develop ment or resistant stock eeems an as sured possibility, the director assert ed. This work is of so tremendous importance that it should be pushed with all peed possible, he believes. The time element is considered vastly important, as the possibility of growing good commercial varieties on stocks that are not subject to blight attacks is Just what the pear industry needs to see realized. The work of the Moro station in de eloping new varieties of grain is said to be of the greatest value to Oregon. The strains of turkey red wheat developed at the station yields bout 3 bushels per acre above the ield of the locally grown varieties. The land in Oregon on which this is applicable totals some 300,000 acres. ncreased production on this acreag-e would thus run nearly a million bus-h- ls a year practically a clear gain. The Hood River station has devel oped orchard practices that tend to ncrease soil fertility and control in- ects and diseases to the point where he product of the district has become famous the country over. So well known has the success of the orchard ists become that the horticulturists of he entire northwest will assemble at Hood River next eyar to see and study the station methods in prac- ical application. 'ORTLH PROTEST SENT CITY TO FIGHT LATE SHIPPING BOARD DECREE. Mayor Sends Message Declaring In clusion In Seattle District Is Intolerable. The placing of Portland In a. sep arate district of operations by the United States shipping board, or transfer from the jurisdiction of the Seattle district to that of San Fran cisco, with the last alternative as the least that Portland people would willingly accept, is demanded in a telegram sent to the shipping -board Saturday by Mayor Baker. The telegram is a reply to a mes sage receivtd from the shipping board several days ago, in whicn .f ortiana s plea for a separate district was re fused and the co-operation ot .fort land shippers to the shipping board's plan of action was solicited. Mayor Baker, Derore sending tne message yesterday, conterred witn leading shippers and announced in sending the message that he would fight to a finish for a separate dis trict for Portland. The telegram to the board reads as follows: "Your telegram has feeen carefully considered. District agent at Port land will be unable adequately to serve the Interests of this port. Past experiences make us certain of the position we are taking, and we regard the future success of the shipping board and the vital interests of this port jeopardized by placing Portland! under the Seattle district. If it is impossible to establish a separate dis trict for Portland we earnestly insist j on going under the Jurisdiction of San Francisco. (Spe cial. )-Considerable dissatisfaction has arisen in Puget sound navy yara circles over the so-called 5 per cent wise increase announced recently as a result of deliberations of the wage board at Washington, D. C. The increase is to go into effect here next week Yard workmen de clare that the change in wage scale is not an Increase but a . decided de crease. The new scale, which provides an increase of 5 per cent in salaries of all navy yard employes, also stipulates that Saturday half holidays will con tinue the year round, but without pay. It is contended that the new -wage scale will allow an Increase in the number of workers employed.
