EUGENE O'BRIEN'S new starring vehicle is "The Figurehead," by John Lynch, and will come today to the Peoples theater. It is a tale of love and political intrigue, which gives O'Brien an opportunity to appear in an entirely new role as a "silk-stocking Willie," who is put up by a secret combination of apparently rival bosses as a candidate for mayor who will be easily beaten by the "machine" nominee. The young aristocrat has really accepted the nomination only as an amusement, but. fired by a trans forming love, he puts up a great fight and throws fear into the hearts of the bosses, who try all sorts of strategy to get him to withdraw. Finally, they try to "frame" him and involve him in a manufactured scandal, and. it is then that he shows the great qualities which heretofore were latent in him. Robert Ellis directed "The Figure head," which includes some of the most pretentious settings and colorful mob scenes ever planned in motion pictures. A cast remarkable for its general excellence supports Mr. O'Brien, some of its members being Anna . JNiisson, Ora Carewe, Edw Stevens, Joseph Girard, Frances Parks and Kate Price. The company includes uu persons. Screen Gossip. His grandfather was the famous Frank Mayo, the idol of the theater going public of a past generation and still remembered by old-timers In that fin old play, "Davy Crockett,' and later, in his remarkable charac terization in "Pudd'nhead Wilson,' Ikark Twain's unusual play. Edwin T. Mayo, his- father, was also a great favorite, playing both Daw Crockett and Pudd'nhead Wilson for . many years. His mother, Frances Graham, was a well known actress, so it is little wonder that young Frank Mayo, the third of the histrionic Mayos, should be winning laurels in the dramatic field. Mr. Mayo is now working in "The Primrose Path. Growers Said to Be Holding Fruit at Prices Which Are Xot Tempt ing to Speculators. HOOD RIVER, Or., Aug. 27. (Spe cial.) The 1920 apple deal, according to H. F. Davidson, local grower and shipper, who is just hack from a trip to New Tork City following attend ance at the Chicago convention of the International Apple Shippers' as sociation, is going- to be characterized by an elimination of speculation. Growers are now holding at prices that do not tempt speculative ele ments, he says, and the condition re sults in a necessity on the part of growers and shippers to finance the marketing of their crops or take the prices that speculators are willing to pay. Growers and shippers must ar range for storage, he declares. Mr. Davidson, in commenting on the recent action of the Boston health authorities in refusing to permit sale of a carload of California pears be cause of traces of arsenate sprays, says that apple growers should care fully wipe their fruit this season. "Here in Hood Rover," he points out, "we are making heavy applica tion of Bordeaux mixture this season for control of anthracnose. This spray leaves an offensive-looking sed iment, and growers should see to it that the fruit is not packed until wiped." Beautifying Committee Accepts. SALEM, Or., Aug. 27. (Special.) Marjorie Rambeau, former Baker stock company leading lady in Port land, also well known as a screen celebrity, divorced Willard Mack then her husband, in 1317, naming Pauline Frederick as "the woman in the case." Shortly afterward. Miss Frederick and Willard Mack were married In Washington, D. C. And. now history repeats itself, Miss Frederick filed papers on Fn day, August 13, 1920, in the county clerk's office. Lottie Pickford. sister of Mary, whose legal name Is Lottie Smith Rupp, has brought suit for divorce from Albert G. Rupp in Los Angeles, Cal. Previously her 5-year-old daughter, Mary Charlotte, was legally adopted by her mother, Mrs. Charlotte Smith, and her name was changed. from Rupp to Pickford. Rupp is said to be a New Tom stockbroker. The complaint states desertion and nonsupport. This is the second time that Lottie has sought to gain her freedom. On December 4. 1919, a suit was filed alleging desertion only, but was dis continued before it came to trial. The Rupps have not lived together since previous to the birth of their daugh ter five years ago. Charlie Chaplin's hair is turning gray, according to dispatches from Salt Lake City, where the famous comedian is resting, pending a settle ment of the divorce action brought by Mrs. Mildred Harris Chaplin. He states that he will not oppose the divorce provided she will withdraw her request for an order restraining him from selling his latest picture. In Utah there is a state law prohibit ing the service of a restraining order of this kind and Chc.plin, if necessary, will remain there until his picture is sold, he says.
