THE MORXIXG OREGOXIAX, MONDAY, ' AUGUST 9, 1020 10 REDS REASSURE PRUSSIA ALL KJiQUI&ITIOXS ON BORDER ARB PAID FOR. Troops Endeavor to Strengthen Bonds and. Seek, t.o Make Popu lace Friends of Soviet. (Copyright. 1920. by the New York World, published by arrangement- prrIjIV Aug. S- Joseph Roth wi?es to fhe New Berlin Gazette from Allenstein. East Prussia: Larger Bolshevik e rr.arched into tirajevo (close to the L,ii.-vt Vruasian frontier). squadron of Bolshevik cavalry I saw on the border was well equipped, every man carried 260 cartridges in his belt. The leader, reserve officer and a student, assured me they have no intention to violate German terrl- '"The Bolshevik cavalry is very rood, but it has those diminutive horses which became so well known in the world war. Some of the cav alrymen are Don Cossacks; some were the old-style Cossack uniforms, others modern field gray. The military dis cipline is of the old style; there is very much saluting. 'The Kussians pay for everything they requisition in soviet ruble notes. They treat the population along the border well. In several towns the trr.nna- as thev entered, put up placards and proclamations reassur ing the population. Among the army commanders is General Suchaczee Skii, formerly a Czaristic First Lieu tenant, now a socialist. "Kussian cavalry is visible along the entire border. They reassure the German border population again and again that they will respect the fron tier. The rain of the last few days has somewhat slowed up the Russian army in its pursuit of the Poles. The troops know nothing of an armistice. Their food supply does not appear to be especially good, and the soldiers are hungry. -In Allenstein there, Is an armed camp of entente troops, who with drew to this place. Apparently, the interallied officers do not know what to do. They were npt prepared to leave the frontier, but were surprised by the unexpectedly rapid advance of th Bolshevik! and were forced to withdraw to Allenstein for tear of collisions with them. The first trainload of Polish refu gees has arrived in West Prussia Am ong them are the families of many officials: they will be interned. The poorer Polish population, unable to flee, awaits the arrival of the Bolshe Yiki. "In East Prussia recruiting for the red army begins to make itself felt. The condition for entrance into the red army is membership in the Ger man socialist party since the revolu tion." Aberdeen Man Is Missing. ABERDEEN, Wash.. Aug. 8. (Spe cial.)
