14 TIIE MORNING ORECONIAN, SATURDAY, JULY 10, 1920 NEED SEROUS LUMBER PROBLEM Supply Is Discussed at Meet ing in Portland. HANDLING IS CRITICISED Timber Men Declare Railroads Do iot Require Equipment as Much as Kfficiency. The car supply continues to be the big problem before the lumber manu facturers of the Pacific northwest and a serious handicap may be faced this fall if the situation does not improve according to the testimony of lumber men who gathered at the Multnomah hotel yesterday in a meeting of the West Coast Lumbermen's association. The car supply is poor. In fact, it is less than 50 per cent of the require ments, it was pointed out. Ineffi ciency in handling the cars was charged, a number of lumbermen declaring that better handling rather than more equipment is the big need of the railroads. Orders for lumber are now below production, and car supply is below orders, according to I. N. Tate of Spo kane, sales manager of the Weyer haeuser corporation, who was called upon to discuss general market con ditions. The last few weeks has wit nessed a betterment of the market conditions, however, he asserted, and there is an undercurrent of business being felt which is encouraging. The obtaining of orders will not be the problem of the summer and fall, he declared, but rather the obtaining of cars with which to handle orders. Car Movement Slow. N. J. Blagen, head of the Grays Harbor Lumber company of Hoquiam, declared that some of the old effi ciency in handling cars was needed. In recent shipments of lumber from Moquiam to Portland in carload lots, he said, movement had been soslow that it only averaged from 10 to 15 miles a day. The average movement of freight cars has been reduced from 100 miles a day several years ago to about 40, it was asserted. The board of directors of the asso ciation met first and in the afternoon there was a general meeting for the membership, at which 100 lumbermen from many points throughout west ern Oregon and western Washington were present. The session closed last night with a banquet in the Multno- man hotel dining room. 11. w vin nedge of the North Bend Lumber com pany North Bend, Wash., president of the association, presided at the meetings and acted as toastmaster at the dinner. Freight Increases Diacassed. An Important feature of the meet ing yesterday afternoon was the con sideration of the proposed railroad frpicrht increase and reports were made by J. N. Teal, Portland attorney; A. C. Dixon of Eugene and George Gerlinger of Dallas, who attended the recent hearing before the interstate commerce commission at Washington, p. C., on behalf of the northwest lum ber interests. Mr. Teal described the meeting at I Washington ' and told of the testi-J mony that was heard. He explained that the proposed increase is along straight percentage lines and will not, if granted, take into considera tion the kind of product or the dis tance of the haul. Strong objection to such an increase was made by the western Interests, he said, because it -would work a hardship on western manufacturers who ship their goods into the east in competition with eastern and southern manufactur ers. The higher freight rate would make it hard for western firms to meet the prices of firms nearer the great centers of production. It was also pointed out that a straight in crease of 24 per cent is proposed for all lines west of the Mississippi and that some of the lines, such as the Union Pacific, already are making profit on existing rates. Such an increase, it was said, is based on the financial standing of the poorest lines, located in the southwest, rather than on the more productive northern lines. Committees Arc Appointed. The subject of the trade accept ance, a method of procuring payment by the manufacturers from their customers which is being tried out for the first time by the lumbermen this year, was discussed, and talks upon the subject were made by S. L. Johnson of the Washington Cedar and Fir Products company, Seattle, and R. W. Schmeer, vice-president of the United States National bank of this city. The following committees were ap pointed: Committee on trade extension Howard Jayne. Portland; Thorpe Bab cock. Hoquiam: Walter Stout, Aber deen; H. A. Lightner, Seattle: A. W. Bryden, Seattle: E. A. Povneer. Everett; T. K. Ripley. Tacoma: .7 s I O'Gorman, Portland; N. S. Lougheed. Vancouver, B. C. Committee on forest policy George S. Long, Tacoma; George Mc Leod, Portland: William Carlisle Jr.. Analaska; Philip Buehner, Portland; J". J. Donovan, Bellingham; W. B. Mack, Aberdeen: E. G. Ames. Seattle. Htlver Pitchers Presented. The presentation of silver pitchers to A. C. Dixon and G. T. Gerlinger, who represented the lumber industry of the northwest at the rate hearings In Washington, featured the close of the meetings of the West Coast Lum bermen's association at a banquet at the Multnomah hotel last night. The presentation speech was made by Thorpe Babcock for the association and brief responses were given by Dixon and Gerlinger. Babcock praised the work of the two men at the hear ing and commended their efforts. R. W. vinnage, president of the association, acted as toastmaster a'nd Introduced Senator Chamberlain who made a brief opening address. Sena tor Chamberlain emphasised the im portance of the lumber industry in Oregon and Washington and dealt briefly with the transportation diffi culties. He stated that water and ships would soon solve the difficulties of moving lumber. Representative 1 1 n w I c y Speaks. Mr. Vinnage then introduced Rep resentative Hawley, who spoke on the present federal taxes and the remedy therefor, lr. Hawley declared that congress had appropriated approxi mately $2,750,000,000 less than the $11,000,000,000 asked for the present fiscal year. "Wien the expenditures are re duced," declared Mr. Hawley, "then the taxes will be reduced." He com mended the association for its enter prise in business and added that the men In congress were always willing to help the lumber industry. Representative Joseph W. Fordney f of Michigan declared that the lum bermen gathered at the banquet rep i resented the highest class of indus I try. In touching on the high cost of I living, Mr. Fordney said that no legis lation could bring down costs but that .when the shortage in materials had j been substantially reduced then the j living rate would automatically de- ! crease. j "Twenty-five per cent of the wealth ; of the world is in the United States," said the speaker, "and the United States has only 17 per cent of the population. This is more wealth than has (.Treat Britain, France, Russia and Belgium combined." FRENCH LOSE NET MATCH JOHNSTON AND TItDEX FORGE WAV TO ANOTHER CTjP.
