POLICY IN PULPIT TOLD 6 accessor to Ir. John H. Boyd Bays Spectacular Will Bo Avoid ed In Church Services. That tbey will like Portland and were delighted with the masses of roses and sweet peae which filled their room at the Portland hotel were the assurances of Dr. and Mrs. Harold W. Bowman who arrived in Portland yesterday afternoon. Dr. Bowman is the new pastor of the First Presbyterian church, which, Kince the resignation of Dr. John H. Boyd last year, has been without a permanent pastor. Dr. Bowman will occupy the pulpit tomorrow morning and evening. Dr. Bowman undoubtedly will Qual ify as the youngest pastor of any of the larger Portland churches. This is his third pastorate, he having graduated from the McCormick Theo logical seminary in Chicago only four years ago. He comes to Portland from the Woodlawn Park church of Chicago, which he has served three years. Prior to his course at Mc Cormick, he taught three years in the Syrian Presbyterian college at Beirut. The college, he explains, with its 1000 etudents, furnished him an op portunity for service in the calling for which he. planned to fit himself, and gave him an opportunity to fa miliarize himself with the Holy land and to travel through the European countries. Marriage Is 1910. His marriage to Mrs. Bowman was In 1916. Mrs. Bowman was formerly Miss Gertrude Butterfield. one of his classmates at Coe college, Iowa, from which they were graduated in 1810. Following her graduation she taught and also served as student T. W. C. A. secretary at the Iowa State college t Ames. It is the first trip wet cf Colorado for the Bowmans and they are greatly interested in the Pacific coast life. "Presentation of the essential, fundamental truths of the Bible age eld in a manner adapted to the modern and scientific views of life is the challenge of the church of today," Hid Dr. Bowman. "Christ must be re-stated to each generation. The essentials of his message must be preached in a way which will give practical help in the daily life and its problems. "Today there is a great hunger ' for knowledge of things that count. This is partly due to the recent war and very much because of a growing reaction against the complexities of life. People are realizing a need which money and power cannot fill. The new religious faiths are in a way a result of the consciousness of this growing need. Spectacular Not Dealred. "The ideal services are those which make the public realize this need and come to the church to fill it. Church worship should be strictly de votional and should in a practical way bring people into an intimate contact with God. There must be an earnest ness present which will command conviction. In the past we have been too theoretical and have devoted too much time exclusively to doctrines. Doctrines may be very worth-while Christianity but no doctrine is in itself worth a Bermon. It is only in its application to man and his problems that it becomes all im portant. "I want to get away from the spec tacular in church services. I have no intention of competing with the theaters for audiences. I do not mean to criticize the methods of others, but my own belief is that religion may be presented so that persons will of their own accord want to come." Officers of the church assembled last evening at the church house at a welcoming dinner to Dr. and Mrs. Bowman, prepared by the "Women's association. None present could doubt the warmth of the welcome or the pleasure given to the new pastor and his wife by the hearty greetings ac corded them. The formal reception by the con gregation will be announced later. SUMMER TALKS PLANNED Lectures Arranged by Knights of Columbus Service Club. Several interesting summer lectures have been planned by the Knights of Columbus Service club, organized pri marily to conduct welfare worfc, ac cording to an announcement made yesterday by Joseph Little, general ciub secretary. His lec ture will be preceded by a musical programme and moving pictures. The entire programme will be given at the headquarters of the service club, 243 Couch street.
