Globe Norma Talmadge, "The Probation Wife." M ITCH ELL LEWIS is at his best in big out-door, nature loving character portrayals. Such a person does he depict as "Burning Daylight," an Alaskan prospector, in the photoplay called by that same name showing at the Majestic theater this week. "Burning Daylight" Is an adaption of a famous Jack London story of the same title. Wall street against the supposed gullibility of Alaska furnishes the conflict of the story and through It is seen a minor struggle between an eastern society girl who loves a worthless club man, a western girl whose devotion has gone out to a man of power and of standing In the frontier Alaskan town. It Is the western girl who wins, but it is also she who suffers. The same little boy who did such conspiciously fine work as a wee cripple in "The Miracle Man" plays with Just as successful results a similar role in "Burning Daylight." Lines and subtitles In "Burning Daylight" are effective. Perhaps this is especially true of Burning Day- I light's reply to Dora Ware when she timidly asks him If he minds when she and her little brother pray for him each night. "Hell, No," was the prompt and kindly answer and Port land audiences are in turn answering this with a loud guffaw each time It appears on the Majestic screen. ' One of the most interesting and fin ished portrayals in the production is that of an alcoholic lawyer called "Necessity" and played by William V. Mon? the cast as a whole is well adai to its assigned roles. The snow scenes are particularly satis- fying and beautiful at this time of the year. Screen Gossip. John Emerson has been elected president of the Actors' Equity Asso ciation by a decided majority. Charles B. Wells, Brandon Tynan and Charles Sindelar, official tellers, reported that both candidates had agreed in writing to a preliminary announcement re garding the result of the election. Upon announcement of the result. Wilton Lackaye, who ran on an "In dependent" ticket, declared he felt the election was illegal and was consider ing whether or not to contest the re sult in the courts. Other nominees of the "Regular" party, elected with Mr. 'Emerson are Ethel Barrymore, vice-president: Grant Stewart, recording secretary. Richard A. Purdy, treasurer; Edmund ijreese. Ten California bathing beauties, who won prizes in a beach dis play at one of the Pacific coast resorts, were engaged by Universal recently to appear in a comedy en titled "Give a Young Man a Chance." The comedy is not an ordinary bathing girl affair and no seaside at mosphere Is used. It is the story of a young man who falls heir to a department store and Introduces up-to-date methods to boost sales. He engages a dozen pretty models for his bathing suit and lingerie depart ments, and uses them in his show windows instead of the old fashioned wax figures. Reeves Eason, Universal director, was telling Harry Carey of a certain man who was supposed to be a war hero. The star knew the fellow's war record and when Eason finished Harry chirped: "Yes, yes. He played 'Over There' over here while the boys were over there." Howard Hickman, long a leading actor for Thomas H. Ince, but since then the director of his wife, Bessie BarriscaJe, has put aside the mega phone and will go back to acting with its less onerous duties. The feminine roles of "Forty-Five Minutes From Broadway," the next Charles Ray production, have caused Joseph de Grasse, Ray's director, con siderable perplexity. The competi tion for the parts has been keen and the applicants so numerous that deci sions were reached only with great difficulty. Scenes of Fatty Arbuckle's version of "The Traveling Salesman" are be ing made in "Jimtown," locale of Bret Hart's stories, which the California geographies designate under the more dignified name of Jamestown. 'Beatrice La Plante is a creature of many surprises. The tradition that clings to the movies that an actress Is no more than an actress does not apply to Beatrice. She Is an initiate of the art of sculpture, a fine pianist and before she entered the pictures had achieved no little fame as a con cert singer. 1 Jack MulhsII will play opposite Bebe Daniels in her first starring pic ture, "You Never Can Tell." Others who will play important roles in the picture are Neely Edwards, Edward Martindale and Leo White. "A Dark Lantern, Alice Brady's next picture, is finished and is now being cut. "A Cumbreland Romance." Ma Miles Minter's latest production, her thirty-seventh star picture. Constance Binney has started work on 38 i.ast." adapted from the play in which she has been starring. Con stance uinney may not be the small est star on the screen but we'll wager she comes very near to it. Miss Bin ney's exact height is five feet, three quarters of an inch.
