Hearing to Be Granted to Certain Krt Line Railroads Not Previously Represented. SALEM, Or., Jun 22. (Special.) The United States labor board will make a decision at the earliest pos sible date on the requests for wage increases of railroad employes, which were presented to the board In the recent hearings held in Washington and Chicago, according to a letter received at the executive offices here Monday from R. M. Barton, chairman of the board. . "Inasmuch as a hearing has not yet been, given to representatives of certain short line railroads and other carriers which were not represented by the railroad executives' commit tee," said the letter, "the decision will necessarily cover approximately 93 per cent of the railroad employes of the United States. As soon as prac ticable, the board will give a hearing to- representatives of the short line and other carriers not represented at the recent hearings, and as soon thereafter as possible a decision, for the employes of these carriers will also be made. "The decision will be effective as of May 1, 1920, and will apply, accord ing to the time served, to all em ployes who were In service as of May 1, and who remained therein or who have come into the service since and remained therein." HUMORIST BREAKS LOOSE Oregon May Be Asked to Provide Refuge for Rattlesnakes. SALEM. Or., June 22. (Special.) 3. J. Fin Icy, who avers that he is a member of the "committee for the protection of Portland parks," has submitted to the attorney-general for ballot title a bill intended to cede to the United States government more of Oregon's lands, create a refuge for rattlesnakes and provide the citizens of tlio state with additional means lor bringing about the destruction of their natural resources. Attorney-General Brown, upon re ceiving the bill direct from Mr. Fin ley today, said he believed it was framed and submitted with a view of 'belittling the so-called Roosevelt bird refuge measure and was not Intended to go on the ballot at the November election. Until such time as the bill is prop erly filed with the secretary of state the attorney-general will refuse to prepare a ballot title. The bill, as sent to the attorney general by Mr. Flnley, proposes: 'That all the public parks and play grcunds and other grounds used for such purposes, whether public or pri vate, be and the same are hereby ceded and conveyed to the federal government to have and to hold the same for the benefit of the children of Portland, subject to such rules and regulations as the federal govern ment may adopt for the use thereof." STAFF MEMBERS ADDED Changes at Corvallis Necessitated by Transfers and Resignations. OREGON AGRICULTURAL COL LEGE, Corvallis, June 22. (Special.) Appointment of staff members in the department of animal husbandry has been announced. Changes were made necessary through transfers and resignations. O. M. Nelson, associate professor in the department, was made associate professor in the -animal husbandry extension, taking the place of E. J. Fjeldsted. Professor Nelson will re tain the direction of the college flocks and the sheep-feeding experiments. His place in the department of animal husbandry has been filled by B. W. Rodenwold of the department of ani mal husbandry of the University of Nebraska, who has been appointed assistant professor. Ir. Earl B. Osborn, deputy state veterinarian, was appointed assistant professor of animal husbandry to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of Oale E. Richards. He has been in private practioe at both Pendleton and Athena. JUNE GRADUATES SIGNED Contracts Taken to Teach at Sal. aries From $1800 to 2S00. OREGON AGRICULTURAL COL LEGE, Corvallis, June 22. (Special.) June graduates of the college in industrial arts have been elected to positions that carry salaries ranging from $1800 to $2a00 a year. Even un dergraduates have been sought, the demand for teachers has been so great. Among the schools which have written Professor Frank Shepherd of the industrial education department are those of Albany, The Dalles, Sil verton, Dallas, Cottage Grove, Marsh field, Elgin and Hood River. Many others in Washington, Idaho and California have asked for instructors. The following is a list of students elected to positions for the next school year, together with the towns in which they will teach: Leland Mentzcr, Medford; J. W. Boggus, Ceres, Cal.; H. C. McCormick, Gresh am; E. C. Platts, Prinevllle; Donald Robey, Twin Falls, Idaho; W. E. Dold. Woodlake. Cal.; Walter Kim ball. Red Bluff, Cal.; A. J. Shank land. Tacolt, Wash.; E. F. Under wood. White Salmon, Wash. Reservists to Take Cruises. ABERDEEN, Wash, Juno 22. (Special.) Grays Harbor naval re servlsts may be taken on cruises this summer on the big; battleships on this coast, according; to word received here today by Lieutenant H. M. Delanty. The reservists may take either two or four weeks cruises, as they may elect.' according to the information. The first contingent will leave Brem, erton July 1 and take a trip along the north coast shores. The longest cruise probably will be to Honolulu. Lieu tenant Delanty, in command of this district, requests all reservists inter ested in such cruises to see him In recT&rd to arrangements. Sanitarium Site Selected. ABERDEEN, Wash., June 22. (Special.) Drugless physicians of the Harbor, who have been making plans for the erection of a hospital, practi cally have decided on a site near Elec tric Park, midway between Aberdeen and Hoquiam, according to a state ment made today. An inspection was made of the site Sunday, and it was pronounced satisfactory. According to the plans, the sanitarium will be one of the best of the kind in the state. A two-story brick or concrete building is contemplated, the cost to be approximately $100,000. Record Vote at Hood River. HOOD RIVER. Or., June 22. (Spe cial.) The annual school election held here yesterday drew the record vote at 218. Dr. C. J. Jenkins, former member, was elected to a one-year term of the city school board, , to I serve out the unexpired time of Mrs. Alma Ij. Howe, who resigned recently. Dr. V. R. Abraham was named for the three-year term of the board. M. H. Nickelsen was named school clerk for his 24th term. BIG SUM SAVED FARMERS Grasshopper Campaigns and Distil late Save Crops. OREGON AGRICULTURAL COL LEGE, Corvallis, June 22. (Special.) Thousands of dollars are being saved farmers of Oregon through farm bureau emergency measures such as grasshopper campaigns and purchasing of distillate for tractor operations. . , An outbreak of grasshoppers oc curred ten days ago in Union county which threatened to destroy the crops. In one field, within two days, grain to the extent of 15 acres was destroyed. Quick action was taken by P. H. Spillman, county agricultural agent, and now the farmers are or ganised for fighting the insects. E. H. Thomas, agricultural agent for Klamath county, has been leading a fight against grasshoppers for the last three weeks and after spending $2000 for poison now has the pests under control. JAP WEDS WHITE WOMAN Ceremony at Tacoma Performed by Nipponese Preacher,. ' TACOMA, "Wash, June 22. (Spe cial.) Akisumi Harano, Japanese merchant of Los Angeles, and Edna M. Warner, a white girl of the same c'ty, were married in Tacoma yes- crUay by J. Haratani, a Japanese preacher. This is said to have been one of several recent marriages of Japanese men and white women who slipped north from California be cause the laws of that state forbid such unions. The latest marriage came to pub lic notice when the return blanks were not correctly filled out and were returned to Haratani. They will have to be sent to Los Angeles, where Mr. and Mrs. Harano must go before a notary to answer questions regarding their personal lives. Miss Watner is a prepossessing girl of about 27 years of age. Gasoline Shortage Ended. CHEHALIS, Wash., June 22. CSpe- clal.) The gasoline shortage was re lieved locally this morning when the sign was posted that gasoline was now available for all comers with their cars. Two weeks ago, when the shortage became acute. Chehalis dealers and the management of the Western Oil company bought 50.000 gallons of gasoline In Kansas. This morning the first tank car containing 10,000 gallons arrived. The new sup ply of gasoline will cost the auto mobile owner 38 cents a gallon. Xewberg to Celebrate. KEWBERG, Or., June 22. (Spe cial.) -A big celebration is planned July S at Newberg. The American Legion is behind it. The parade starts at 10 o'clock headed by the Multnomah Guard band of Portland and the American Legion Newberg band.
