Snecial at -Ll SEVEN ARE IN RACE .THE HORNING OREGONIAN, SATURD4Y, JUE 19, 1920 Problem of Having Permanent or Portable Buildings for Increased Classes' la Faced. Two members of the board or edu- i cation of school district No. 1 are to be chosen by the voters of Portland 1 at the regular school eleotton today, and the important problem of whether the school district will erect perma nent buildings to care for the needs of the school children or will continue to erect portable structures will be up for decision through a special tax levy measure on the ballot. The polH will open at 12 o'clock and will close at 8 P. M. For the elec tion of school directors, anyone who Is qualified to register for a primary or general election, whether he be actually registered or not, is eligible to cast a vote, while for the special tax levy only those who are paying taxes for real or personal property held in his own name, or who are stockholders of a corporation paying uch taxes, are eligible to vote. Heavy Vote la Kxpectcd. In view of the interest In the elec tion of school directors at this time and also because of the desire of many residents to see the school housing problem solved ry the erec tion pf adequate permanent buildings, a heavy school election vote is ex pected. A complete list of the polling places was published in The Ore gonian Friday morning. Seven candidates are seeking the two positions to be filled on the board of school directors, and each voter will be qualified to vote for two of the liven. Among the candidates are two prominent local business men, Frank L. Shull, manager of the Globe Grain and Milling company, and Will iam V. Woodward of Woodard, Clarke & Co. Both were prevailed upon to make the race and are being actively supported by a large number of citi ens and property owners. O. M. I'lummer Alno Candidate. The other candidates are: O. M. Plummer. who is running for re-elec tion: Mrs. Francis A. Sherman. Arthur W. Jones, S. A. Murhard and J. N. Pearcy. All are wejl known and have been waging active camp3i?ns. The special tax measure o be voted upon at this time calls for a 3-mill levy, designed to raise approximately $U&0.000. which, if obtained by the passage of the measure, win bo used for the erection of permanent build ings In dtstricts where increases in population have made classroom fa cilities inadequate. If the tax levy is passed, the con struction of more than a score of portable schools will have to be rushed thjs summer to provide for all the children at the fall opening of school. The school directors, how ever, would Immediately take steps toward obtaining plans for permanent school buildings and would probably have actual construction under way shortly after the money would be available the first of the year.
