Extra values for 39 RESERVES ARE DOUBLED c Reliable Merchandise Reliable Methods THE MOItNIXG OREGONIAX, FIUDJLT, MAV 14, 1020 GASQL Price Increase Not Based on Di minished Supply as l'roduc tion "SsIiom's Gain.- Here Are Savings On Merchandise of Dependable Quality i In the face of claims by the Stan dard Oil company of a great gasoline bhortafjc, on which it has based re cent price increases, the latest gov ernment reports snow that instead of a decrease in reserve stocks there actually has been an increase to such an extent that the reserve stock on hand April 1 of this year was vir tually twice that of one year ago. Attention to official figures on Ratoline stocks in this country, as compiled by the United States bureau of mines and the United States prco dctic survey, was directed yesterday by C. L. Bojh, l'ortiand automobile dealer. Reserve Supply on Increase. 'Kcccntly in The Oicgonian in an Interview as to this alleged gasoline shortage. 1 cited official facts about ttocks on hand, and called attention lo the fact that the United States bu reau of mines is always about 90 days delayed in its reports on tho gasoline situation," said Mr. Boss. "Since that interview, there has ap peared a later report of tho bureau of mines, which shows that the re serve of gasoline in the United States had been increased from January 1 to February J of this year, to the ex tent of 100,000,000 gallons. "On January 1, 1919, the reserve stock of gasoline on hand in the United States, according to official fisures, was 297.32G.983 gallons. The reserve stock of gasoline on hand January 1, by the same official fig ures, was 446,793,431 gallons. Production Shorn liain. "There was a greater reserve stock ' on hand February 1 than the same j date a year agfo by 249,466,448 gal lons, or a total reserve stock Feb ruary 1, 1920, of 646.793,431 gallons, almost double the reserve on hand the year previous. Yet we managed to worry along fast year without any serious shortage of gasoline. "Now comes the latest gasoline re port, giving figures for the month of March. It shows a 20 per cent increase in production, the figures being those of the United States geodetic survey. At the same time the importation of crude oil from Mexico was 6.500,000 barrels, white the consumption for March was 12,000,000 barrels greater than the consumption for March of 1919. This left the reserve stock of gasoline in the United States on April 1 just about twice as great as it was one year ago. "I have studied the gasoline sit uation for a number of years and have followed the facts closely. 1 have become convinced that the most serious thing about the gasoline sit uation is the ease with -which Jhe big companies can manipulate the situa tion to suit their own ends. ' AVreng Impression Created. 'Neither the Standard Oil company nor anyone else can go behind the of ficial facts and figures of the United States bureau of mines. Yet that is just what the company appears to be trying" to do, apparently in an at tempt to produce a wrongful impres sion as to gasoline facts in the minds of the public "I am sure the public generally would bo interested to hear what tho Standard Oil company has to say about the great gasoline shortage hoax in view of the offiical figures as to the increase of reserve stocks of gasoline." STANOAKJD 3IAY ACCEPT PLAN Partial Pleasure Car Ban. Likely to Stay Some Time. General feeling prevailed yesterday that the officials of the Standard Oil company will accept the plan outlined by tiovernor Olcott, whereby gasoline below the 66-degree specific gravity , test may be used in Oregon during the alleged gasoline shortage. Nothing definite will be known un til officials in San Francisco have re viewed the statements, issued on the subject by Governor Olcott and State Treasurer Itoff. If the plan is ac cepted, the gasoline shortage will slowly be relieved. The partial ban now placed on pleasure cars cannot be lifted at once, it is announced, but as quickly as gasoline manufactured for use in California and Washington can be shipped into Oregon, the situa tion will probably become easier. Some relief was afforded In Eastern Oregon yesterday, when ranchers op erating tractors were given permis sion to bring gasoline into the state from Washington - and Idaho. This stock, together with that shipped from l'ortiand by the Standard Oil com pany, will probably permit the opera tion of tractors until the general posi tion has been improved. In towns where more than one gaso line company is operating, the short age is not felt. For Instance, )n Salem there are four companies and the motorists are enabled to obtain nil gasoline desired. fin Portland three of the oil com panies are selling gasoline without restriction, but unless the shortage, which is conceded to exist, is relieved, their stocks will dwindle, and a seri ous condition would exist throughout the state. In Marshfield. reports stated, gaso line is not being sold to passenger cars. In many other cities where the stocks are low this same rule pre vails. In Portland and throughout Oregon motorists will be forced to conserve gasoline, regardless of the outcome of the present situation. This con servation must come in the way of ' shutting off motors on standing cars and other needless waste which serve as a constant drain on the supply. It is probable that some systematic ef fort to conserve gasoline will be un dertaken by organizations interested in the motor industry. KELSO, Wash., May 13. (Special.)
