WAR SAVINGS STAMPS On Sale at Business Office. Oregonlan. Northman Drops Foreign Tongue. The Northman is the title under which the new publication which re places the Pacific Skandinaven and the American Scandinavian comes from the office of H. J. Langoe, man aging editor of the former Portland foreign-language paper. While it will be the product of the same office which turned out the sheets that were printed in Scandinavian, U will be entirely in English. The first issue, which was off the press April 29, has 1!0 pages and bears on its cover a picture of the statue of liberty, and a poem. "America." It is edited by H. S. Swenson and managed by Mr Langoe. Not long ago Mr. Langoe strongly advocated doing away with foreign language publications in America. Specal Trans to Convet Oddfel lows. Arrangements for special trains are being worked out by the O.-W. R. & N. passenger department for the annual state convention of the Independent Ord'er of Oddfellows, department council and Rebekahs' assembly, which will meet at Baker May 24-28. It is expected that there will be more than 1000 delegates in attendance and that the visitors who will accompany them will make this one of the largest gatherings in eastern Oregon this year. Special trains will leave Port land the evening of May 24. There will be an attendance of members of the order from Idaho who will come as guests of the Oregon men and women of the fraternity. Woman's Foot Rcn Over. Mrs. Catherine Worthingtoit of the Teas dale apartments received a bruised foot yesterday afternoon when L. L. Shores, 255 North Nineteenth street, struck her with his taxi at West Park and Washington streets. Mr. Shores reported to the police that he ran over the woman's foot. O. 11. Strub lun, whose address was not secured by the police, was struck and bruised by a car driven by James Chadfield, 423 Halsey street, at the intersection of Fourth and Washington streets. Forest Protection Urged. Oregon, which has the greatest body of acces sible standing timber in the world, is asked to observe the week of May 2:1 to 20 as forest protection week and a programme for the occasion will be worked out to impress upon citizens, particularly those who contemplate visiting and camping in the forests the coming summer, the necessity of precaution against the spread of fires. A proclamation relative to forest protection week has been issued by Governor Olcott. Chief Clbrk for Ticket Office. Harvey p. Pomcroy, ticket clerk in the consolidated ticket office of the railroads, will today assume the duties of chief clerk In that office, succeed ing to the place made vacant by the resignation of R. D. Walker. Mr. Ponieroy was formerly ticket clerk of the Southern Pacific and when the offices were consolidated was trans ferred to the big agency at Third and Washington, street. ANNoriNa Women Charged. Will iam Mertinger, who was arrested at Fifth and Columbia streets, charged with annoying women and girls, was fined $100 and sentenced to 30 days itu jail by Municipal Judge Rossman yesterday. Mertinger gave notice of appeal and his bail was placed at $500. He was arrested by Motorcycle Patrolman Stiles after residents in the vicinity had turned in a com plaint relative to his conduct. Woman's Hearino Tcesdat. Mrs. Vivian Mclnnis, who was arrested by Inspectors Gordon and Wright and Burns operatives on charges of the forgery of checks declared to aggre gate about $160. will have a hear ing la the municipal court next Tues day. Mrs. Mclnnis is declared to have passed two bad checks upon the Km ppnura, 124 Sixth street, three on Meier & Frank and one on Liipman Wolfe & Co. Bcs Tjnb Permit Issued. A per mit was issued yesterday by Motor Bus Inspector Gill for the operation of two 20-passengcr automobile buses between Portland and Seaside. The permit was issued to the Oregon Scenic Trips company, which plans to operate, and buses with .stops at all the towns between Portland, Astoria and Seaside. Davis who lives at 592 East Sixty-seventh street, reported to the police yester day that burglars made an attempt to break into his house while the family was away. Adv. part of a large estate left by an uncle who died recently in India. Meager information that such is the case has just been received by the two Port land women, and they are now writ ing to relatives ire the east in an effort to verify the report. Their first intimation that they were to share in an estate of several million dollars was received in a letter from cousin. Suspected Hold-TJp Man Arrested. Joe Medina, alias Santiago Madero, was arrested yesterday morning by Inspectors Collins and Coleman and is being held at the police station for nvestigation in connection with the hold up of Marion Swank and Royal McDonald at the intersection of Lom bard and Delaware streets yesterday morning about 4:30. Medina was ar rested at Third and Burnside streets yesterday morning and Swank is said to have identified him. He is said to have done time in November of last year for vagrancy. Marriage License Not Recovered. Efforts of the. police yesterday to secure the marriage license of pretty l9year-old Mrs. D. L. Caldwell, which was reported stolen Thursday night, were unsuccessful it was an nounced. Officers, however, are work ing on the case. Mrs. Caldwell re ported to the police that she gave a party at her home, 402 Princeton street, and one of the men present took the document. Her husband is now im the state of Washington. Lecture on Bees Is Todat. Bee culture is to be taken up in a course of elementary lectures Dr. Henry Collins is to give in Meier & Frank's auditorium beginning today. The talks are scheduled for 2:30 P. M. and will be on the following subjects: Morphology of the bee. the use of hives, bee flora, swarming, handling bees, their enemies, wintering and general management. Theft Suspect Bound Over. Walter Anderson, charged with the theft of a storage battery and spot light from the machine of C. E. Travillon, 127 Farragut street, was held to answer to the grand jury yesterday in the municipal court on a charge of larceny. H.s bail was placed at $200. Carrier Pigeon Seen. A pigeon. thought to be a carrier, was seen on the farm of Sam Anderson. R. F. D. No. 1, Westport, Or., on Sunday. April 25, he reported. Four boys who were arrested Thursday night on, the charge of the larceny of an automobile were released yes terday after having been held incom municado in the city jail all night. It developed that they were driving a car belonging to an uncle of one of them and they had permission to use it The boys were: Lloyd Robinson, 18: Raymond Hughes, 18; Gladwjrrt Lawpaugk, 18, and Lloyd Lawpaugh, 23. Deputy District Attorney Deich uttered a denunciation of the police practice of holding prisoners incom municado in the jail in municipal court yesterday In connection with the case. Vogt Will Helps Charities. 1he First German Methodist church of Portland is to receive $250: German Methodist orphan homes at Berea, O., and Warrenton, Mo., $200 each; and the Old People's Home at Quincy, 111., $200, by the terms of the will of Mrs. Caroline Vogt. who died in Portland January 23, admitted to probate yes terday in ' the circuit court. John H. Vogt. son. was appointed executor of the $20,000 estate. Though grand children are remembered in: the will most of the estate goes to the sons, John H. and George A. Vogt. and the daughter, Mrs. Caroline A. Wuest. Theft of Trousers. Cash Charged. George Arthur Hopkins, alias Ray Rex, who is said to have taken a pair of trousers in the pocltets of which were money and bills amounting to $146 from the room of M. Ford of Sheridan, Or., in the Ryan lodging house. Fifth and Main streets, was arrested yesterday morning by Motor cycle Patrolman Stiles. Hopkins is said to have been transferring the money from the pockets of the stolen pair of trousers to his own pockets at the time of his arrest. Hopkins is 22 years of age. Mr. LaRochb to Retire, Rumor Sats. Rumor that City Attorney La Roche is contemplating retirement from public office and entering pri vate practice was circulated about the city hall yesterday. Although the rumor could not be substantiated, it is known that City Attorney La Roche desires to enter into private practice, but is likewise eager to handle the legal work of the com mission of public docks in connec tion with his private work. Wife Charges Non-Support. Voyle Cook was arrested by Deputy Con stable Watkinds yesterday on a non support charge preferred by the wife, Mrs. Ruth Cook.
