in TTIE 3IORXING OREGONIAN, THURSDAY, A PI til-. S, 1920 STATE FUNDS REACH RECORD LOW IRK Treasury Has Only $11,036 . in General Purse. TAXES DUE AFTER MAY 1 Issuance of Warrants Likely to Be Stopped When Cash on ,. Hand Is Exhausted. SALEM, Or.. April 7. (Special.) Although the current expense of con ducting the state government is . in 'excess of $300,000 a month, there re mains in the general fund of the treasurer only $11,086.86 to meet tliese obligations until the tax money for the year 1920 commences to arrive shortly after May 1, according to a financial report prepared today by O. P. Hoff, state treasurer. The report shows total expenditures dnring the period from January 1 to March 31 of J6.762.967.3S, and a bal ance in the state highway fund of 91,617.528.84. Under the classification of cash on hand there is $2,427,705.10, but this is said to be merely a paper showing, as outstanding warrants will absorb most of this sum. Current expenses for the three months covered in the report totaled $972,000. Joseph Richardson, assistant state treasurer, said this afternoon that the general fund was the lowest now for many years, and that in case the $11, 000 balance now in the hands of the Mate treasurer was exhausted the fcecretary of state probably would re fuse to issue more warrants against the fund until sufficient tax money had been received to meet the obliga tions. Should It become necessary for the secretary of state to discontinue the issuance of warrants against the gen eral fund because of lack of money in the treasury, it would be possible that the army of men and women now In the employ of the state would have to wait until as late as May 10 before receiving compensation for their services during the month of April. Payment of other claims which are checked against the general fund would be delayed for a like period of time. MUSICAL CLUBS EXPAND STATE BODY AFFILIATES WITH .NATIONAL ORGANIZATION. Wood, chairman of the executive com mittee of the democratic state com mittee, made public tonisrht a letter which he had sent to Herbert Hoover, asking whether Mr. Hoover would accept the democratic nomination for president if it were offered to him. In the letter Mr. Wood said that ha had assisted in the organization of the Hoover democratic club of Massachusetts, and added: "Since the formation of our club, I have seen a statement purporting to emanate from you in which you said you would accept the nomination of a republican convention. I feel that the democrats who are active parti cipants in the- movement for your nomination upon their ticket are en titled to know whether or not you will accept the democratic nomina tion if offered you."
