' - t I 1 ' t EGYPT WANTS OWN RULE PORTLAND TRAVELER WRITES OP HIS EXPERIENCES. Oorge Atiyeh Says Natives Use French for Conversing to Break Away From English. People of Egypt, without regard to religious affiliations, are firm in their determination to have national inde pendence and are using French in stead of English in general conversa tion and business dealings, according to George Atiyeh of the firm of Atiyeh Bros, of Portland in a letter received yesterday by A. Atiyeh. By this time the writer is in Constanti nople, from which place he will go to Syria, Persia and other countries, returning home by way of China. He has been gone since last October, and is studying conditions in Europe and the orient. V,hile in France Mr. Atiyeh visited the battlefronts and describes his experiences in passing over those re gions as most distressing. In Kheims Mr. Atiyeh said he ate his meals di rectly opposite the great cathedral, which was badly shattered by shell fire directed by the invaders from old Fort Xogent. 13 kilometers south west of the city. "As I sat there and saw the ruin all about I shed tears," wrote Mr. Atiyeh. "I cannot fully describe the destruction. All is different than when I was last here and saw the! beautiful city of Rheims with its wonderful cathedral, now in rufils The horror of it all is borne in upon one only when one looks upon the devastation, for it cannot be imag ined." Mr. Atiyeh wished to take train from France to Cairo, Egypt, but learned that it might take months to make the trip that way. The means of rail transportation are in very poor condition, be writes, and often a train will run from one sta tion to another and then wait any where from one day to one week for coal. He therefore took passage on a steamer from Marseilles to Alex andria and from there went to Cairo. IA1LY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND. Or.. March 23.
