M. yesterday to meet a Mr. Joy, a friend from Chehalis, Wash., J. R. Welty. 759 Hancock street, dropped dead from an attack of heart disease. Born in Illinois 72 years ago, Mr. Welty lived for many years at Che halis. Wash., where he was connected with the federal land office. He was for two terms a state senator from the state of Washington and was a fire warden. He had lived In this city for six years. Mr. Welty is sur vived by his widow. The date of the funeral has not yet been settled, pend lrg the arrival of relatives from the east Mr. Welty was a member of the First Congregational church of this city. Bot Hurt bt Automobile. Lee Stanffer, 11 years of age, 511 Morri son street, received a fracture of the left leg above the knee yesterday rooming when he was struck by an automobile driven by C. u. Bieasaaie, 30 Alder street, on Lownsdate street between Alder And Morrison streets. The boy was taken to the police emergency hospital and later to the 6t. Vincent's hospital by the Arrow Ambulance company. According to the report made to the police by Mr. Bleasdale the boy was 'coasting down hill when he fell off the coaster In front of the automobile. Mr. Bleas dale was driving south on Lownsdale etreet at the time. INSTALLATION SERVICE TONIGHT. 3tev. Li. Bowring Quick will be in stalled as pastor of Calvary Presby terian church this evening. Mr. Quick has been in charge of the work since the beginning of October and has now heen called by the congregation as Its pastor. Rev. J. A. Townsend, D. D, will act as moderator of the service. The sermon will be preached by Rev. Levi Johnson: Rev. Boudlnot Seeley will deliver the charge to the con gregation, and Rev. A. A. Thompson the charge to the pastor. The serv ice begins at 7:45. Mathews. 228 Grant street, teamster for the Eastern & Western Lumber company, was caught beneath a fall ing truck load of lumber early yes terday morning and received injury to the back. He was taken to Good Samaritan hospital. Saw Amputates Fingers. George Pfeifer, 24, 391 Union avenue, laborer employed at the Western Cooperage company, caught his left hand In a saw and amputated the four fingers. Be was treated at the St Vincent's hospital. Chester A. Moores will act as chair man of the day. Store Damaged bt Fire. Fire which started In the waste chute in the store of Lipman, Wolfe & Co. about 1 o'clock yesterday morning did about J1200 damages before it was ex tinguished by the fire department The firs started, in the opinion of Captain Day, assistant fire marshal. from matches swept up with other waste and ignited as the result of passing down the chute. The chute was considerably damaged, two ma hogany doors and several casings re ceived damage and there was con siderable damage, from smoke. In addition an . automatic sprinkler on one of the floors caused some water damage to goods. Truck 1, engine 21 and chemical 1 responded to the fire alarm sent In by the night watchman at the store. Man Asks $7500 por Son's Death. Carlo Borelli. administrator of the estate of Attavio Borelli, deceased yesterday filed suit in circuit court demanding 87500 in damages from the Xicolai-Xeppach company as the result of the death of hiB son, who was in stantly killed when a pile of lumber owned by the defendant company fell on him, February 23, last The boy was playing on the sidewalk at the time. Fraternitt to Have Banquet. Members of the Phi Delta Kappa fraternity will gather at' the Benson hotel tomorrow night for their semi annual banquet, which will be held in the Tyrolean room of the hotel at o'clock. The committee in charge has prepared a programme of talks and musical entertainment The fraternity recently moved into larger quarters and now is located at room 309 Globe building. Ministry of Healing Discussed. "The Church's Ministry of Healing" was Dr. McElveen's topic at the First Congregational church last night He discussed the work of Mr. Hickson, and indicated how that work differs from Christian Science, New Thought Dowieism and other healing cults. The lectures have been so popular to necessitate the use of the church auditorium. Rabbi Wise Announces Sermon. The subject of Rabbi Jonah B. Wise's sermon tonight (Friday) at 8 o'clock will be "The Religion of Miracles and the Miracles of Religion." All men and women are welcome. The Sat urday morning service will beat 10:30. Rabbi Wise's topic will be "The Ark of the Law." The religious school will be at 10 o'clock Sunday. Ail children are welcome. - Woman Asks $5000 for Injury. Trial of the personal injury suit of Alice E. Davis against the Portland Railway, Light & Power company was started yesterday in the circuit court. Circuit Judge Belt Is here temporari ly to try the case. The plaintiff is seeking $5000 damages as a result of injuries alleged to have been sus tained in a street-car accident Jewish Services Announced. Fire which started as the result of an ex ploding incubator lamp in the home of Mrs, E. C. In Ex Seventeen Applicants Fall aminations Test for Work' man Is Passed by All. Results in two civil service examl nations were made public yesterday by the civil service board, one being an examination for park helpers and the other for laborers in the engi neering, sewer, water and Incinerato bureaus. Thirty-nine applicants par ticipated in the examination for park helpers, 22 of whom received a pass ing grade. In the examination for laborers, only 13 applicants participated and all re ceived a passing grade. The success ful candidates in the examination for park helpers were: -William M. Royall. Raymond I.
