16 THE MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY- FEBRUARY 2, 1920 SALARIES HELD TOO LOW EUGEXE TEACHERS WAXT EV CITI StPERIXTEXDEXT. Harmony With Present Adminis tration Declared to Be Out of Question; Progress Stopped. ETGENE, Or., Feb. 23. (Special.) Members of the era.de teachers asso ciation of this city at a meeting this afternoon unanimously voted that should W. R. Rutherford, city super intendent of schools, be retained for another year they will under no con ditions remain as teachers in the local schools. Practically 100 per cent of the grade teachers of the city are aid to be in favor of this action, although some were prevented from attending the meeting on account of sickness. This is the outcome of a series of indignation meetings held during the present year by the local grade teachers as a result of the low sal aries they are receiving, alleged to lie lower than those of teachers in any city in me state i" ue-'"- -class, and of lack of harmony be tween the superintendent and some of the supervisors on one side and the grade teachers on the other. In a statement issued to the press, the teachers say: The teachers agree that harmony with the present- administration is out of the question.; that without harmony no progress in the schools can be expected." Superintendent Rutherford has been on a leave of absence since last fall, taking a course at Stanford univer sity. He is expected early next month. BAX PLACED OX THEATERS, DAXCES, BILLIARD IIALLS. Influenza Takes On More Serious Form University ot Oregon Not AHected by Order. 4 EUGENE, Or., Feb. 23. (Special.) The Eugene public schools were closed today at noon, a ban has been placed on all public meetings whatsoever and all dances, theaters, moving picture shows, card rooms and billiard halls are closed as a result cf an order issued today by the city board ot health. This action was taken on ac count of an increase in the number of cases of influenaa here. k The malady seems to have taken on a more serious form during the past few days than heretofore, ac- j cording to the physicians, th me number of cases reported la increas lng rapidly. Several deaths from uneumonia. which ; in each instance followed an attack of influenza, have occurred during the past three or four days. Leading physicians state that in their opinion the ban may be lifted In a week or ten days, as they ex pect the peak of the epidemJc to be reached very soon, judging from the fact that it is subsiding in other towns of the valley. " ?' The University of Oregon Is still in session, not being affected by the order of the local health board. BEND PHYSICIAN NAMED nccesso r to City Hea Ilh O f f icer Appointed by Mayor.
