Coburn. Mr. Schulderman was appointed cor poration commissioner by Governor TVithycombe In 1915 and in 1917 was reappointed for the four-year term. A native Oresonlan, Mr. Schuldreman was born In Portland in 1873 and re ceived his education at the Couch school and the Bishop Scott academy. Past Record Pointed Out. In announcing his candidacy, Mr. Schulderman makes the following statement: "If nominated for secretary of state and elected at the general election, I shall conduct the office on strictly business lines, rutting down expenses wherever possible and securing econ omy and efficiency as I have done in the office of corporation commis sioner. "The secretary of state Is a member ef the board of control, and as such has many Important duties. Should I become a member of that body. I hall also exert my influence to con duct the state's affairs and institu tions also upon a strictly business basis, eliminating; waste and extrava gance and spending- the money raised through taxation to the very best ad Tan tagre. "In submitting: my candidacy for the nomination for secretary of state to the republican voters, I wish to point to my record in reducing: ex penses In the office of corporation commissioner, to my familiarity with Important business matters and to my experience as an executive acquired in the oonduot of that office. Go wan. civil war vet eran of Burns, who was personally acquainted with the martyred presi dent, has also secured a reservation for the dinner, which will be given In the Chamber of Commerce dining room at 6:30 o'clock next Thursday,! under the joint auspices of the repub lican state and county central com mittees. Gilbert of Astoria, chap Iain of the 2d Oregon, and Mrs. Eliza beth B. The great lum bering interests that are developing In Deschutes, Klamath and Crook counties are entitled to better trans portation facilities. The isolated coun try schools need more assistance. The senatorial district In which I live comprises in area nearly one-fourth of the state of Oregon. We are en titled to a redistribution and I will endeavor to obtain a proper distribu tion of senators and representatives." Mr. Upton owns a large Irrigated ranch at Prlnevllle and Is also en gaged In the practice of law. He has never been a candidate for public office but once, when he was elected to the legislature from Multnomah county. In 1912. Assurances have been received by G. E. Hamaker from Washington that F. S. Myers may have a hearing be fore the senate committee on post- offices and postroads, according to report. The sender of the message Is said to be a member of the committee. but his Identity is not revealed. Mr. Hamaker Is the chairman of .the dem ocratic county committee for Multno mah and is a friend of Mr. Myers, who was ordered removed as postmaster by the president last Monday. Citizens AVho Fail to Vote Called Slackers in Address of Po litical Criticism. That those who fall to register or vote, and those who do not use their Influence toward the election to public office of men of sound business sense and ability are slackers in citizen ship, was the declaration of C. C. Chapman, in addressing the Progres sive Business Men' club at Its regu lar weekly luncheon at the Benson hotel yesterday. Mr. Chapman gave his impressions of the recent special session of the state legislature and explained what he believed are the dangers of everything resembling hurried emergency legislation. If all the appropriation measures passed by the legislature for reference to the people are passed at the forth coming election the tax for purely state purposes will be raised from 3.23 mills to about 8 mills, he said. The blanket ballot bill, he declared, had had Its way greased for a rapid slide through both houses and was passed by both the senate and house before printed copies of the bill could be placed legislators. in the hands of. the PIONEER PHONE MAN DIES and was for a time In the newspaper business in Walla Walla. The first long-distance telephone in the northwest was built by Mr. Hopkins. C. B. Hopkins Passes Away Follow ing, an Operation. SEATTLE, Wash., Feb. 5. (Spe cial.) C. B. Hopkins, pioneer tele phone man of Washington, died Wed nerday at the Mayo hospital. Roches ter, Minn., where he had undergone an operation. Mr. Hopkins was 65 years old and had been more or less Intimately connected with the tele phone business throughout his entire career. Ho was born in San Francisco, July 18, 1855. and came to the northwest as a boy. Governor Davis and other state of ficials, who went to Washington to confer with federal officials and members of congress regarding an appropriation for arid lands in the west, are well pleased over the show ing that was made and confident the west will be given consideration. They succeeded In getting a bond bin before congress carrying this amount. Idaho Legion Commander Resigns BOISE, Idaho, Feb. 5. (Special.) The executive committee of the Amer ican Legion for Idaho will have to select a new commander. E. C. Boom of Moscow, who holds that office, has been ordered to take up his duties of prohibition director for Idaho and make his headquarters in Boise. He will take over the work now being done by Lewis Williams, Internal revenue collector for Idaho. Mr. Boom resigned as legion commander.
