How ard Hopkirk, Reed college senior, president of his class and of the Reed religious affairs committee, has be come assistant to Rev. W. G. Eliot of he Church of Our Father. A recep tion at the home of Rev. Eliot wa held early in the week honoring M and Mrs. Hopkirk. Mr. Hopkirk has been a leader in religious affairs Reed and was formerly pastor of Sell wood church. Gambling Raid Nets Five. A gam bling raid conducted by Patrolmen Hanson and Parker on a tailor shop at 105 West Park street yesterday morninar resulted in the arrest . of P. J. Saucr, tailor, on a charge of con ducting a gambling game, and the ar rest of four others on charges of vis itlnar the came. Those arrested for visitine are Jack Walker, R. J. Rob ertson. Frank Meadows and J. Fal con. The officers said they walked In while the boys were engaged In lively dice game. Maoicias Coming Here. Blackstone, reputed to be the world's greatest magician, will appear at the public auditorium Sunday night. Black stone will arrive in Portland Sunday with his 22 assistants and a carload of scenery and paraphernalia. Black atnne'a performance is divided into two Darts, the first to small magic consisting; of more than 100 tricks performed with lightning speed, and the latter Dart of the show to illu sions and a levitation act that is said to be amazing. Graham's Successor Appointed. General Manaeer Buckley has named C E. Peck actintr superintendent of motive power of the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation lines to succeed the late J. F. Graham. Air. Peck has been assistant superinten dent of motive power and was pre viously master mechanic of the South ern Pacific, located at the Brooklyn shops of that company. The circular makes the appointment date from February 1. Grange Meets All Dat. Evening 5tar grange will hold an all-day meeting tomorrow at the Evening Star Grange hall on East Division street. Luncheon will be served at 13:30 P. M., followed by a programme which will include a number of songs bv the Franklin high glee club, a reading by G. G. Israelson. and violin solos by Gertrud Irene Vessey. Sen ator S. B. Huston will lecture, touch ine on "Both Sides of the Peace Treaty." Ctcle Chain Injures Foot. While he was riding in a motorcycle side car at East Ninth street and Haw thorne avenue yesterday morning at 4:30 o'clock, F. B. Williams of Gresh am accidentally caught his left foot in the chain of the machine with the result that his great toe was ampu tated and his foot badly crushed. He was taken to the Good Samaritan hospital for treatment -by the Arrow Ambulance company. Concert Treat Arranged. A real musical treat has been promised Sun day afternoon in connection with the regular Sunday afternoon concert, when the Monday Afternoon Musical club chorus of 40 trained voices will appear as the special attraction. The chorus is said to be one of the best on the Pacific coast and is directed by Mrs. Rose Coursen Reed. Lucien E. Becker will preside at the organ, playing a series of old-time favorites. Bursting Tire Injures Man. Will lam Sourer, 309 Jefferson street, the proprietor of a tire shop at 109 Elev enth street, received a bad cut over the eye yesterday morning when a tire which he was inflating at the shop exploded. A piece of rubber ap parently flew and struck him over the eye. He was taken by the Ambu lance Service company to St. Vincent's hospital for treatment. Bird Lecture Announced. "The Raptores. or Birds of Prey," will be the subject of an illustrated lecture on birds by W. A. Eliot before the Oregon Audubon society tomorrow night at 8 o'clock in Library halL This group of birds includes hawks, owls, eagles and vultures. Their economic value as well as their inter esting habits will be discussed. The public is invited. Rhodes Man Reaches Oxford. Frank C. Flint, the first Reed college student to win a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford, has arrived in England and has been enrolled at Balliol col lege, according to news received by his friends at Reed. Balliol is con sidered the foremost college at Ox ford. Stephenson Smith, the other Rhodes-elect from Reed, will take up his work at Oxford next fall. Press Club Luncheon Todat. The weekly Press club luncheon will be held in the Hotel Oregon grill today noon. It is announced that the presi dent and leaders of the new Land and Labor league will be present to out line details of their political pro gramme and coming campaign, and to answer inquiries of the press repre sentatives. Yellow Cabs Are Popular. The low taxicab rates that went into ef fect recently have added considerably to the popularity of the Yellow Cabs. Funeral services for Anna Bertha Lee, who died at Emanuel hospital on January 2S,twere held at Miller & Tracy's undertaking establishment on Friday, January 31, Rev. McHenry of the Mount Tabor Presbyterian church officiating. Interment was made in the Damascus cemetery. Anna Lee was born In Portland July 10, 1912. The dinner will be at 6 o'clock and the address at 8. The latter is free to the public. A number of slides will be shown. At the dinner it is planned to organize a permanent red triangle club, to per petuate the fellowship and sentiments of the war period. ' - City Treasurer III Another city official was placed on the sick list yesterday when William Adams, city treasurer, was detained at his home because of a heavy cold. Mayor Ba ker was reported yesterday as im proving. Barring complications, it is expected, that Mayor Baker will re turn to his office early next' week. Commissioner Bigelow is rapidly im proving from the attack of influenza and probable will be able to return to 'his office Monday. Student President Takes Office. Miss Calista Eliot presided as the new president of the Reed college student body at a meeting of the council yes terday. Miss Eliot is the second Reed woman to hold the highest student office. Miss Louise Huntley was the first to conduct the office when the war called the president-elect. Join Dambach, in 1917. Miss Eliot is a chemistry major and an assistant in the administrative office. Music Forum Tonight. William Robinson Boone will be the leader tonight at 7:15 o'clock at the public music forum to be held in Central library. Feb. 6. (Spe cial.) The automobile of L. E. Steph- ns was badly damaged this morning hen it collided with a street car at the intersection of Tower avenue and First street. The accident is said tq have been caused by N. Olingat park ing his truck too near the street in tersection.
