Progressive Business Men AVill Be Enlisted in Campaign for Suf ferers of Xear East. A special programme will be put on at Thursday's meeting of the Pro gressive Business Men's elvrb at the Hotel Benson. Samuel C. Lancaster, builder of the Columbia River high way, who is now state chairman for the near east relief, will be chairman of the day. Mr. Lancaster has ar ranged a number of events, all of an educational nature, rejrarding post war conditions in Armenia. Syria and other near eastern countries. The main address will be by Mrs O. F. Lamson, society and club woman of Seattle, who is a native of Ar menia and who fled with her parents while still a young girl, to escape atrocities and massacre at the hands of the Turks. Mrs. Lamson is making a speaking tour of Oregon in the in tercst of next month's near east re lief drive, and will later go on to California to assist with the cai pnlcn in that state. The near east relief campaign In Clackamas county was inaugurated last night at Oregon city with a rous ing meeting at the Oregon City lodge of Masons. Oeorge Estes, well-known attorney or Portland and prominent Oregon Masonic circles, waa the speaker. More workers are needed, and State Chairman Lancaster requests those who will he able to assist In the drive. SALEM, Or., Jan. 28. Special The motor vehicle division of th secretary of state's office today cleared the decks of the congestion following the unprecedented rush fo motor vehicle licenses for the year 1D20. Hereafter the department will Is sue and forward license plates for all motor vehicles on the day of the re ceipt of the applications, provided that the applications are in prope form and are not required to be re turned to the applicants by reason of defects. Notice is being sent to the eheriffa of the several counties an chiefs of police and marshals of th various cities and towns of the state notifying them that all licenses thus far requested have been issued. that they may resume the enforce ment of the provisions of the motor vehicle laws within their respective Jurisdictions. Including today, approximately 59 800 licenses for passenger and com mercial motor vehicles for the cur rent year have been issued. In addi tion 1150 motordycles, 1100 chauffeurs and 570 dealers in motor vehicles have been licensed. Approximately Jl, 260, 000 has been received! from the sources, which amount, after deducting the administration ex penses, will be transferred to the highway fund to be expended under the direction of the state highway commission for road construction and improvements throughout the state. NORSE LIKE DRY VICTORY Cove Woman . Hears of Rejoicing Over Defeat of Wets. COVE, Or., Jan. 26. (Special.) Mrs. Constance Anderson, wife of L. K. Anderson, Cove postmaster, has re ceived letters from relatives in Nor way rejoicing over the nation-wide victory for prohibition of all intox eating beverages except beer, which has been left to local option of the communes. The details of the activi ties of Mrs. Anderson's relatives the work of bringing about the vic tory were set forth in the letters. One cousin of Mrs. Anderson, Sven Aarrestad of Arendale, aged 70, toured Norway to enlighten the people on the advantages of prohibition. He made 42 speeches. Another cousin, Arne Oarborg of Bergen, who is among leading writers in the old Norse tongue and is author of Fred (The peace), Politiken (The Politics), Fad eren (The Father) and other books widely read, also assisted in the cam paign. The letters close with a ques tion as to America's successful exe cution of nation-wide prohibition. FIREMAN DIES IN FALL Astoria Man, in Aiglit, Drops lie side Sliding Pole. ASTORIA, Or., Jan. 2d. (Special.) Paul Marion, an extra man of the Astoria fire department, was instantly killed about 1 o'clock this morning in a very peculiar manner. He was sleeping in the dormitory of the de partment's headquarters, and arose to raise a window, but fell to the floor below through the three-foot opening in which the sliding poie is located, breaking his neck. He was a native of Astoria. 35 years of age, and leaves two brothers and two sisters. They are Benjamin and Frank Marion, Mrs. T. O. McCann and Mrs. W. J. Moore, all of this city. He had been a member of the regu lar fire department for ten years, re signing recently to accept a position with Koss, Higgins, Mason Khrman & Co. 15 WOULD BE DOCTORS Examination in Optometry Is Held in Senate Chamber at Salem. SALEM. Or.. Jan. 26. (Special.) Fifteen applicants for licenses to prac lice optometry in Oregon took exam inations here today. The examinations were conducted by Dr. Floyd B. Day ton of Portland and Dr. W. M. Peare of La Grande, members of the Oregon state board of examiners for optom etry. Dr. Ella C. Meade of Albany, member of the board, was unable to be present because of business mat ters needing her attention in Califor nia. The written examinations were held in the senate chamber today, while tomorrow a clinic will be held at the state penitentiary. It is understood that under an arrangement originat ing with the examiners all convicts needing relief will receive eyeglasses at cost. Miss Alice Clement, director of the Albany College Conservatory of Music and Miss Mamie I.
