It was inevitable, under the circum stances, that h news of reduced flour output should be misinterpreted here and there into a forecast of An actual shortage, ays the Northwestern Miller. So far as the country as a whole Is concerned, such rumors are, of coarse, utterly groundless; but a partial suspension of milling activity and a bad tie-up in freight might easily produce local shortages of a more or less serious nature. Various points reported a rather excited local demand, mostly from householders. The result. If this state of things is allowed to continue, will natur ally be a greatly Increased amount of flour hoarded In small quantities by people whose, total requirements probably do not exceed a couple ofbarrels a year, but who are doing tneir best to create a shortage rendered totally unreasonable by the size of the crop and the actual mill output. EGGS ARE WEAK AND DECLINING Buying Frico Will Be Kednced a Cent Today. The egg market, ' which has been in active during tbe cold spell, has weakened considerably. The cash buying price will be lowered today to 70 cents. Large re ceipts are expected- as soon as country roads become passable and carlots of out aide eggs are alao coming In. The Seattle egg market slumped 5 live cents yester day. The butter market was firm, with a good demand for cubes. Prints are not likely to be advanced soon, as soma of the creameries are averse to raising prices at this .time. Poultry receipts were small and with a good demand hens were quoted higher at 32 cents for heavy and 30 cents lor light. Dressed 'turkeys were higher at 47 cents. Dressed meats were unchanged. NEW TORK, Dec lS.-r-Prlce movements during today's desultory session of the stock exchange were mainly downward, despite further moderate improvement in the international exchange situation and more hopeful signs In domestic industrial conditions. These factors were offset by tighter money, due mainly to heavy transfers of bank funds in connection with the pay ment of federal income taxes and the de cision of the United states supreme court sustaining the validity of war-time pro hibition. The oil group, together with motors and their subsidiaries, equipments, shipping and affiliated issues, were three to eight points oown at tneir worst, but rallied sharply In the final dealings, when call monev eased from 0 to 6, a few leaders recording muueram gains at tne irregular close. Strength developed in the corn market today, owing largely to a ' notable advance in sterling exchange. The close was firm, c to lc net higber with January $1.36 and May $1.82 i1.3. Oats gained lc to 1V4C in provisions ths outcome varied from 12c decline to a rise of 80c. Upward swings of the corn market showed their greatest force arousd the opening and the close, especially during the last 15 minutes. Knowledge of ths big Jump in sterling waa well circulated before the opening and had an immediate response. For a while, however, buying lacked volume and soon there was a tran sient setback In prices to below Saturday's finish. Liberal receipts and a prediction that the crop movement would increase were mors or less responsible. Oats wore . strengthened by the short age of feed barley in ths northwest and by the sharp reduction of the amount of acreage devoted to wheat and rye. .
