Kew information obtained by de tectives in the effort to clear up the mystery surrounding the shooting last Monday night of Private Mark A. Matthews, of the camp hospital at Camp Lewis, which occurred at the corner of Eleventh and Main streets, proves that he stayed at the Portland Y. M. C. A. last September while he was working at the L, cafe teria. Detectives Pat Maloney, Bob La Salle and Tom Kwennes were in formed that Matthews had lived at the Y. M. C. A. on several different times in the early part of Decem ber. Boys who had known him at that time said the soldier was usually out late at night. He was apparently well acquainted with the city. The information sheds more light on why Matthews was in that par ticular section of the city at the time ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL CAMPAIGN. C: (21 to acquire and maintain a public park at Oyster Bay, N. Y.. ultimately to Include Bagamore Hill, the Roosevelt home, to be preserved like the Washing ton estate at Mount Vernon and the home of Mr. Lincoln at Springfield; (3) to endow the Roosevelt Memorial association as a national society to per petuate Theodore Roosevelt's ideals of American citizenship. Every donor to the fund will receive a certificate of membership bearing a mall portrait of Theodore Roosevelt and will become a member of the Roose velt Memorial association. The names of all contributors will ba deposited In the national memorial at Washington, D. C. when erected. of the shooting. He Is believed to have been looking for some of his former acquaintances at the time. No definite information leading to the Identity of the two men seen with Matthews following the shoot ing has been discovered.' BRIDAL PAIR SNOWBOUND Wedding: Is Delayed 2 4 Honrs by Storm in City. Emil Beck, a Pendleton merchant, and Miss Eleanor Hunt, for the past year secretary to Dr. Edward H. Pence, pastor of Westminster church, were to have been married at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at a wedding ceremony at the home of Mrs. Drew L. Price in Irvington, but the snow Btorm decreed otherwise. Instead of the scheduled wedding at the appointed time and place the couple were snowed in at the Hunt residence in Lents, and it was nol until 24 hours later that they ap peared at the home of Dr. Pence, where they were married. After wards a wedding supper was served by Mrs. Price at her home. The couple will live in Pendleton. SPRUCE SUIT IS FILED Government Asks Jlecovery of 96300 From IT. A. Brewer. Recovery of $6300 from TT. A. Brew er and the Massachusetts Bonding & Insurance company is demanded by the United States Spruce Production corporation in a complaint filed yes terday in federal court. The plaintiff corporation sets forth that it contracted with the defendant for the purchase of 200,000 feet of apruce timber for airplanes at a stip ulated price of $10." per thousand feet. In pursuance of thi3 contract it is lleged that the government advanced the defendant $6300, bvit that ho thereupon failed to deliver the spruce in keeping with the terms of the con tract. Members of the American Legion yesterday headed rain on headquarters of alleged radicals In which a large quantity of radical literature was confiscated and ono man arrested. The chief of police, accompanied by the Rev. R. S. San born, who served as a major in Vrance, headed the raiding party. Thomas Deegan, holding a card in the Butte I. W. W., was held under $1000 bond after arrest. " According to the county attorney the prosecution will be the first in this county under the criminal syndi calism act passed by the last Nevada legislature. BOX APPLES SELLS HIGH Odd Grower Gets $4.88 Net for Shipment to Missouri. IlOOn RIVER. Or., Dec. 12. (Spe cial.) The record returns for a box of apples have been received by J. E. Ferguson, Odell grower. Mr. Ferguson shipped several boxes of selected ap rles by express to a merchant at Charleston, Mo. One of them consisted of 32 Wolf Rivers, a variety the chief merit of which is its size. Mr. Ferguson has received a check for $4.S6 net, mak ing the apples bring more than 15 cents each. The express ou the single box of fruit was $2.34. Obituary. A. O. Krogstad, 79, who had been etaying at the Oregon Soldier's home in Rojcburg, dropped dead at Third and Glisan streets yesterday morn ing at 8:15 o'clock. The body was turned over to Deputy Coroner Leo Goetsch who announced that death wns due to heart disease. Mr. Krogstad had been in the city rd had been staying at the home of his brother Otto O. Colvin, a native Oregonian, were held Wednesday at the Anderson chapel. The Christian Science service was ! read by Mrs. C. O. Huelat. Mr. Colvin, j who is survived by his widow and five children, was aa yeara uui. death occurred Sunday following an attack of heart disease. Mr. Colvin's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. L,. Mr. Lavier was born at St. Paul, Or June 11, 1840. He married Miss Adeline Lasheppel, daughter of early Oregon pioneers, and for the past 40 years they had resided at Woodburn. Mr. Lavier was a skilled mechanic and in his early days followed the occupa tion of a shipbuilder and contractor. He is survived Dy nis w.uuv., . Funeral services were held today. OREGON CITT, Or., Ded. 13. (Spe cial.) Lester Logan Ulbrand, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Ulbrand of Jen nings Lodge, died this morning from pneumonia. Mrs. Ulbrand died just a year ago this month with pneumonia. Lester Logan Ulbrand was born in Clackamas county 33 years ago. He had been employed as a mechanic for the Overland Automobile company in Portland. The funeral services are to be held on Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the Portland crematorium. fcrCOY COUPLE WRESTED KIDNAPING CHARGE IS MADE BY "WOMAN'S HUSBAND. T. A. Olsen and Mrs. Verda Walling Taken Into Custody by Sherifr Near Sllverton. DALLAS, Or., Dee. 12. (Special.) T. A. Olsen and Mrs. Verda Walling both living in the vicinity of McCoy were captured by Sheriff Orr near Sllverton yesterday and were brought back last night to Dallas, where they will be held to answer a kidnaping charge made by Rupert Walling, hus band of the woman. Olsen and Mrs. Walling left McCoy Saturday morning, the woman taking two children with her. telling her husband, it is said, that she was go ing to Sllverton. Olsen left on the same train, officers say, and when the couple failed to return the authorl. tics -were notified and a description of the missing couple was sent to all parts of the state. The sheriffs of fico believes the getaway was pre arranged and put forth every effort to catch the runaways. Mrs. Walling is about 23 years of age and has four children, the two oldest of which she left with her hus band. Olsen is nearly 26 years old and has a wife and two children. The couple will be given a hearing before Justice of tho Peace Sjibley some time today. 10 Below at Oregon City. OREGON' CITT, Or.. Dec. 12. (Spe cial.) rThe thermometer registered 10 degrees below zero here this morning. Thursday night tho mercury began falling, at the rate of 1 degree an hour until midnight and then the downward movement was accelerated until a maximum cold was reached of 10 below. Just out of the city 4 dp-' grecs colder was reported. Late Fri day afternoon the narrow waterway of the river channel half a mile below the falls was practically gorged with ice.
