-rT -v - THE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 1914. 10 STILL SELLS WHEAT Houser Not'Affected by Water front Fire. HAS PLENTY MORE GRAIN Northwestern Market in-Xo Way In fluenced by Loss ot 300,000 Bushels on Albina Docks. Bay's Trading Small. The loss of 300,000 bushels of wheat by the burning of Columbia and Montgomery docks yesterday had no effect whatever on the wheat market. notwithstanding the mallnesa of supplies In the Northwest. Tha wheat all belonged to M. H. Houser and while It was intended for shipment, he has plenty of grain in reservo to meet all hia requirements. Irvmg dock is full of grain and, besides. Mr. Houser yesterday had over 100 carloads of wheat on the tracks here. In addition to this he has a great deal of wheat in the Interior. "Instead of reins short of wheat," said Ifr. Houser yesterday, "I have much more than enonugh to make up the loss. I am ready to sell wheat now, in fact have sold wheat since the fire." Had the firs occurred last week, when there was a stronger demand for wheat and the market was more active, the destruc tion of tills quantity might have had more of a sentimental effect on the market. Some holders, particularly on the Sound, were firmer in their asking prices yesterday, but otherwise the Are was without influence on the market. The destruction of 3000 tons of barley and 2000 tons of oats by the burning of the docks of course had no effect on the prices of these cereals, as there is a large surplus of both in the country. The wheat market was quiet throughout the day. There was a steady California demand, but the usual high prices were asked by sellers and the volume of business was small. There was no Inquiry from the Orient. Local dealers o.uoted prices un changed. The undertone of the barley market con tinues firm. Oats are dull. It is reported that valley oats can be had at $23.50. " Local receipts. In cars, were reported by the Merchants Exchange as follows: Wheat Barley Flour On ts. Ha onnay Tuesday 4, Wedm-sday .. ft 57 7 Thursday . . . . Following the big Eastern storm the ap plo market of New York has improved. Mail advices just at hand say of the situation as regards Western fruit: 'Boxed apple receipts have been extreme ly tight, but buying also has been light on account of the great difficulty experienced in making deliveries with trucks. Prices showed a little Improvement and it is thought that inasmuch as barrels have reached such a high range of values, boxes will show further improvement as the sea ron progresses. The Spring movement usually means the best demand for boxes, as apple dealers feel that It is to their best Interests to buy of th smaller packages when the consumptive demand in apples Is on the decline- 'Ben Tavls- are selling at JS1.7." to 2. Ganos at 1.0 to $2.15. Aristo Blacks at $2 to $2.2.",, Rome Beauties at 2 to J2.40. Winesaps at $2.23 to $2.50, Pippins at $2 to $2.25, Arkansas Blacks at $2.20 to Ji.50." A report from Liverpool, dated February 13. said: "Box apples were more In request and a slight improvement has to be recorded -for Oregon Newtowns. but a shipment of col ored apples from Washington did not realise satisfactory prices." STEADY BtTi'ING OF SPOT OREGON IlOrS Now Crop Contracting Is Being Done in California, at 15 Cents. Hop buying in this state continues to re duce the available supply. Purchases made by H. L. Hart were the Graves lot of 100 bales at McCoy at 17 cents, the Dctrick lot of 40 bales at Gervais at 164 cents, the "Stroda and Cunningham lots, aggregating 80 bales, at Harrlsburg, at 164 cents, and the Mullen lot of 35 bales at St. Paul. The Krebs lot of 216 bales of low-grade bops at Independence was sold to Lewis at about 14 cents. No contracting was reported In this state. Proctor contracted for 400 bales of Sonomas at 15 cents. A California authority esti mates 14,336 bales of 1913 hops in growers' bands in that state. POTATO SHIPPING TRADE IS . DULL Idaho Supplying- the Only Outlet for ' the Oregon Article. The jjotato maricet'is dragging. A few cars aro going td'feWr3 p'omts, but Idaho is still shipping In that direction at low prices. The few orders that are coming in are for fancy potatoes and do not allow shippers to pay over 55 cents at country points. The California demand is practically at a stand still. It is estimated that by April 1 there will Still be 100 cars of potatoes left in Oregon and only two months more of the shipping season. If Idaho cleans up In the mean time It is possible that the Southwestern business and home consumption will use up this quantity. XGGS NOT LIKELY TO DECLINE SOON Supply and Demand Are Equal and Prices Are Steady. Eggs were steady and unchanged at'lS1, S19 cents. Shipping orders were on the market, some of them at the latter price. Speculators are putting away a considerable quantity of eggs and this, with the heavy local .consumption, is keeping the market cleaned up. There is no indication that prices will move in either direction in the near future. Poultry and dressed meats were in fair supply and Inclined to be weak, but quo tations were no lower. There was no change in the butter market. CAR. OF FLORIDA TOMATOES RECEIVED 11 rot Shipment of California New Potatoes Reaches Front Street. The first shipment of California new pota toes was received yesterday and put on sale at 0 cents a pound. Asparagus was more plentiful and lower at 11 cents for white and 13 cents for green. A car of Florida tomatoes arrived in fine shape and they were put on sale at $4.50 a crate. A car of lettuce was also received. Seven cars of bananas were distributed In good condition. - The steamer due tonight will bring a light shipment of oranges and lemons. Bank Clearings. THEODORE F. DRAKE, ' T Support Is Lacking and Prices Work Downward. . SUGAR SHARES WEAKER London, Berlin and Montreal Sellers of Canadian Pacific Express Issues Keflect American's Dividend Cut. NEW YORK. March 12. Bullish specu lators apparently lost all Interest In the stock market today and it sagged of its own weight. Distinct weakness developed in spots, but in a majority of cases the movement was not large. The decline was due to lack .of support rather than to active efforts to force down prices. Trading was dull, althougli a few stocks reflected per sistent selling. Canadian Pacific was sold by London, Berlin and Montreal and touched a figure three points under yesterday's close. Among the industrials the sugar stocks again sagged. American Sugar dropped to S7. the lowest figure since 1908. Express shares sagged sharply, following the further cut in the American Express dividend rate. The Rock Island and New Haven tangles, the prolonged uncertainty regarding the Mexican question and the indefinite status of general business conditions all tend to confuse sentiment and restrict speculative activity. The 'bond market was similar to that for stocks. Prices in most easea were shaded and severe losses were recorder in various low-grade issues. Total sales, par value. $2,275,000. United States bonds were un changed on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Reported by J. C. Wilson & Co., Lewis building. Closing Sales. 8,400 High. 73 '29i "43',i 67 J LiOW. .Bid. Railroad ticket agents in Portland are bemoaning the action of the car riers in discontinuing the payment of "commercial allowances" on railroad tickets sold in connection with steam ship tickets for European passage, as it deprives the agents of considerable revenue. Heretofore the railroads have been paying a "commercial allowance," which is nothing more than a commis sion, of $2.50 on each rail ticket from the Pacific Coast to Chicago. From Chicago to the Atlantic seaboard the allowance has been. 75 cents- Now the roads west of Chicago have decided to discontinue these allowances. It is understood that the Interstate Commerce Commission has been inves tigating this practice. THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL BANK PORTLAND, OREGON UNITED STATES DEPOSITORY Capital Surplus J. C. Aithoush wheat at times made today a show of strength, the market ultimately fell under bearish con trol. Crop damage reports were denied and there was a continued lack of export call. The close was steady, but Vi c to c net lower. Corn suffered a setback of (qAg to tc. and oats of 4c to (6) jc. Provisions varied from the same as last night to a loss of Estimates that the. wheat yield in Kansas alone would run up to the extraordinary total of 150,000,000 bushels marie damage advices seem relatively inconsequential if true. . In corn a Rood deal of selling pressure developed near the end of the Bession. Oats sagged from the start. Seeding for the new crop was reported as about com plete in Oklahoma and well under way in Kansas. Realizing by holders wiped out a fair advance in provisions.
