Crusader Will Be Welcomed by His Prlenda at Luncheon and at Lec ture Wben He Returns. Dr. Woods Hutchinson, the noted physician, teacher, writer and lecturer, Internationally famous for his wide spread campaign of education against tuberculosis, will --return to Portland, the city of his pioneeer efforts, for a two-day visit next Friday. Many loyal friends and staunch sup porters, who stood with Dr. Hutchin son through the difficulties of his first work against the "great white plague," will be on hand at his public lecture Friday evening to warmly welcome hlm.A. I Mills and T. B. "Wilcox, both champions and supporters of his early work; in Oregon, will be among these. The noted crusader will be the guest of honor at the regular weekly lunch eon of the Commercial Club on Sat urday and he will be tendered a com plimentary banquet on Saturday even ing by the physicians of the city,. Dr. Calvin S. "White presiding. On both occasions he will give brief, informal talks, his only public appearance be inff at the Friday evening lecture, which is to be given under the auspices of the Portland Woman's Club at the Taylor-Street M. E. Church, at 8 o'clock. The speaker will be intro duced by A. L. Mills, with whose as sistance Dr. "Woods Hutchinson found ed the Open Air Sanatorium, near M.11 waukie. about eight years ago. - Dr. Woods Hutchinson is a witty, pleasing and effective speaker and many local physicians who remember his keen lectures on medical topics will be in attendance to hear him on the freneral topic, "Is a Man's Life His Work or His Play?" Arrangements are left to a commit tee of the Portland Woman's Club and members of its social department will act as ushers. To defray expenses a nominal admission fee will be charged, tny balance above expenses to be turned into the philanthropic fund of the Woman's Club. Either at the meeting of the City Commission this morning or Friday, City Commissioner Daly will announce his appointment of an appraiser to make an appraisal for the city of the property of the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company. The figures secured by the expert will be used by Commissioner Daly in presenting to the State Railroad Commission the ar guments in favor of six streetcar fares for 25 cents. Recently the commiselon passed an ordinance appropriating 5000 to cover the cost of the appraisal. It is said that this will not be sufficient to com plete the investigation and tt is ex pected that further appfopriations will be asked from time to time. Origin ally it was setimated that the appraisal would cost 10,000. Later Commis sioner Daly dropped to J7500 and finally he ret it go at J5000. VALUATION MEETING TODAY Somers System Again to Be Dis cussed by Owners and Assessor. Valuation on all property bounded by Tenth. Stark, Third and Taylor streets will be discussed by the owners. As sessor Reed and representatives of the Manufacturers' Appraisal Company at a conference to be held at the library to day at 1:30 o'clock. Tentative valu ations were placed on the property and submitted to the property owners at a meeting last week, but after confer ence a revision of the first valuation was necessary. The conferences are being held to acquaint the property owners with the details of the Somers unit system of realty valuation, which system is be ing installed this year by Assessor Reed, assisted by Walter E. FOES OF SMOKING MEET "SWAT CIGARETTE" CAMPAIGX TO BE DISCUSSED TODAY. IS Conference ta Be Held With Physician In Regard to Nitrate of Silver Treatment for Habit. Anti-cigarette campaigns will be dis cussed at a meeting of the "swat the cigarette habit" campaign committee which has been called to meet this morning in the Juvenile Courtrooms at the Courthouse. The meeting was called by Mrs. R. E. Bondurant, tem porary chairman of tn'e committee, to confer with Dr. John G. Abele, 811 Union avenue North, who has volun teered to give his services in treating boys addicted to the cigarette habit with nitrate of silver. . The nitrate treatment has met with much success in the East, where sev eral Juvenile courts have used It gen erally in. fighting the cigarette habit. It was recommended to Judge Gatens by Juvenile Judge Coulter, of New York, who visited ln Portland last week. Several boys have said they would take the treatment and it is probable the first Portland experiments in the treatment will be made "this week. Dr. Abele has been in the medical school inspection service for nearly six years and is much interested in stopping the cigarette habit among the boys of school age.
