V COLTS TOP-HEAVY: 2 TO BE Mahoney and Murray Slated - for Shift Former May Go to Victoria Club. NICK STRONG FOR LEONARD Renny Henderson. Out With Knock Arainst SIcCredle San Francisco Turns Down Chanrt to Take Evans From Nationals. BT ROSCOE FAWCBTT. . Finding himself overstocked with talent, Nick Williams has decided to unload some of his Portland North western excess baggage before report ing time. The first veteran to go will be Chris Mahoney, and it is likely that Dan Murray, young catcher, will also be sold. Manager Williams admitted last night that he had a deal on with Victoria for Mahoney. Victoria seeks the ex-Coast outfielder and Nick be lieves he can spare him. "I want a little more speed," ex plained the popular local leader. "Chris is a mighty good man and has a pleas ing personality, but I intend to develop-some youngsters for my outfield tbis year." Manager AVilliams has practically de cided to train again at Santa Rosa, and has tentatively closed with the Chicago White fox for a game there March 24. aT.ast Spring the Colts gave the Chi--agoans a fierce trimming. Martinoni and Kastley making them appear like ;busliern. The Colts will play at Sacra mento March 2S and 2:1. 1 "In the list of pitchers published yes terday, "Tiny" Leonard's name was in advertantly omitted." remarked Man- ' ager Williams. "That big boy ought to prove a winner for me, I liked his work when he was with Spokane and I predict the major leagues for him within two years. When he was up at Philadelphia before he was only a mere kid in his "teens and that was too big a Jump for him from college to big league ball." . San Francisco had a cnance to buy Outfielder Evans from the St. Louis Nationals the other day, but Del Howard turned down the chance, for . Evans is a left-handed batter and the Seals already have Mundorff and Kchaller as portside delegates. Evans appeared in Portland with the Kox Oiants last November and is now over in Italy. Benny Henderson nas taken a firm grip on himself and is training faith fully for his "come back" with the San Francisco Coasters. The ex Beaver star is up a Boyes Springs con ditioning, and, to quote Francis Man nit in the Bulletin: "Henderson presents all the evidences of sincerity. He is a big, wholesouled fellow, who inspires confidence from the very first, and he seems to be the kind of man whose word, once given, will endure for good." All of which is nice talk, but, here's some from Benny himself that isn't quite so ornate: "My one ambition is to pitch every other game in Portland this Summer, and if I don't rub it into that big stiff McCredie I'll go out and eat grass. He treated me shamef ullji" Benny always appeared to be a wholesouled fellow, but that sort of anarchistic propaganda wouldn't show it. Ben fell off the wagon in the critical stage of the 1911 pennant race and almost cost Portland the gonfalon, yet Mac took him back the next Spring and gave him every chance to make good. Unfortunately Ben received ragged support in the Spring of 1912, and, after losing his first five starts, became discouraged and his ambrosial drouth metamorphosed into a cocktail cloudburst. Quite naturally Benny was placed under suspension but Mac gave him another chance last Spring by sending him to Toledo in the American Asso ciation. Benny again Jumped the traces. Now he blames it all onto Mc Credie. Perhaps Mac is at fault, but if so, Woodrow Wilson is an office boy in the United States Senate. Henderson won 21 games as against 12 losses for the Portland champs of 1911. and, if he behaves himself may be a big winner for the Seals. Ben has a regiment of friends in Portland but he will not add to his following by ungrateful persiflage. Tom Hughes, the veteran Washing ton h.urler. finally, has come to terms with I.jos Anjreles ajtd will twirl in the Coast league in 1914. Ttube Maxmeyer 'has' grounds for a nice. Juicy damage suit. A letter from C. C. Carr's baseball school at San Antonio, Tex., is awaiting Maxy at Mc Credie's baseball headquarters. It's slandor. Zasallzerlstott!
