THE MORNING OEEGOXIAN WEDNESDAY-, JANUARY 7, 1914. 19 HOPS ARE CL1BI1 Oregon Market Now on 22 Cent Basis. QUALITY BEING RAISED SEcNcff Buys Bis Block of Yaklruas. Growln; Demand F"roiu Eastern States, Yliere iShortago l Now Apparent. The Oregon hop market 1b now practically en a 22-cent basis for the best quality, and within the next day or two this will with out doubt be the ruling price throughout the state. The market Is as strong. If not stronger, than It has been at any time since harvest. The demand !s substantial, and with the great reduction of first-hand, holdings, the Indications are that pxioes will advance steadily. Oregon growers are holding firmly, and this prevents xnuoh activity in the local market. Among tbe deals that came to Ttght yesterday was the sale by George Mil ler, ot Reedvllle, of 69 bales to McNeff Bros. The same buyers bought 400 bales of Yakima hops during the day. the crops of floudder, the Moxee Hop Company and the Bank of Bunnyslde. The terms were not made public Julius Flneus delivered 848 bales to Joe Harris at 21 14 cents. The best evldenoe of the soundness of the market is the fact that quality is being graded upward. Mediums are becoming primes, and primes are getting Into the choice class, and are valued In price ac cordingly. . After the turn of the year, supply and demand always become the dominant fac tors In the market. Bearish pressure la still being exerted, in various ways, but the mar ket is clearly seeking its rightful level. EJven the American brewers are coming to a realization of the shortage that is facing them. They have allowea too many hops to go out of the country, and stand a poor chance now of establishing a safe reserve. All the inquiry is from Kastern sources. Hon men who sre posted on the brewery situation and who have lately visited Fort land declare that the actual requirements yet to be provided for are such as will put the selling market on the Paciflo Coast at a higher plane than has been seen since the current crop was in the bale. We can still sell the medium and small sizes at 12s and lf!s for the best fruit, but we find that for the large soft fruit showing bruises or otherwise blemished, the prices fall off down to 8s and Us per box. . "We notice that this year the best prices can be obtained for the best fruit, irrespec tive as to whether it comes from the Hood Itlvcr or the Rogue River districts, quality for quality. Speculative buying has been resumed on a small scale In the country wheat markets. Interior dealers are the buyers, and they are paying considerably abo-e Coast prices for grain. At tidewater points exporters and millers are sa d to be well supplied and they are still quoting 85 cents tor club and 93 cents for bluestem. Although a few buyers in the country are bidding more, they have not succeeded in making much im pression on the farmers, who as a rule are holding out for an SO-cent market at ship ping points. , Local receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: Wheat Barley Flour Oats Hay Monday 107 27 14 13 4 Tuesday 71! 11 12 8 10 Year ago 54 15 2 7 4 Season to date. 11, 771 10)5 J4i3 HOT 1!8 Year ago 11,558 1G4S 1198 1117 1287 ntESH PRODUCE RECEIPTS ARE SMALL tar of Celery Is Due Thursday Cheap Ap pTeSVUrlAig Off. Growers In some sections have advanced their selling prices 10 to 25 cents a box. There is a steady demand for fancy ship ping potatoes, but no Improvement In the market for other kinds. The San Francisco advance Is attributed to the bad weather and. floods In .the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys. SHARP DECREASE IN POTATO YIELD American Crop Worth Much More Than In 1912. SHARP RISE IN PRICES Baltimore & Ohio Uoses, ' following Announcement of Distribution. General Market Is Firm at Close. NEW TORE, Jan. . The feature of to day's stock market was the announcement at midday of Union Pacific's intention to distribute its holdings of Baltimore & Ohio shaves in the form of a stock dividend, ap proximating 83 per- cent. Coincident with this, however. It was also stated that the dividend so declared -would le offpet by a reduction in the regular Union Pacific dividend of from 10 to 8 per cent. The news was preceded and followed by considerable .excitement and violent fluctua tions In Union Paclfio and Baltimore & Ohio Issues, the former advancing smartly and the latter declining correspondingly. In fact, Baltimore & Ohio common today at tained its lowest level in some years. Although the Union Pacific executive committee assigned no reason for the -Baltimore & Ohio distribution at this particular time. Wall street chose to regard their ao tlon as further proof of the desire of "big business" to conform -with the views of the Federal Administration. The list, as a whole, was strong for the greater part of the session, opening gains in the more speculative Issues extending from 1 to 2 potnts. Towards the end of the morning session, however, prices yielded in most quarters and business fell away. Offerings of time money were scant, with rates unchanged. Call money was In light demand "and commercial paper was taken under recent quotations. Bond dealings were unusually diversified with an irregular tone. United States 3s declined H per cent and the registered 4s advanced on call. Total sales, par value, were $2,260,000. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Reported by J. c. Wilson & Co.. Lewis building. Corn Stamps Badly on Cheap Offers) From Danube, sm Well as From Argentina Oat Also Break. CHICAGO, Jan. 6. Cheap offers of ship ments from the Danube, as well as from Argentina, brought about a downward swing today In com. . The market closed heavy, c to 3lc under last night. Wheat fin ished c to c net lower, oats down c to CPlc and provisions unchanged to 7c off. Lack of an adequate demand for cash corn !here Jiad considerable to do with the rapidity with which the price of futures gave way. There was a show of strength in wheat early, based In part on higher cables and partly on the smallness of receipts North west of here, but the market soon wavered, especially after corn began to sag. Mild weather, which prevailed In both the Winter and Spring wheat belts, counted against the bulls, -prospects of free wheat soon from Canada acted as a wet blanket later on the market. Pressure from Canadian receipts here was in the main responsible for oats going to the lowest price .of the season. For awhile pit traders attempted to cling to the bull side, but finally were forced to let go. Oraln longs selling out weakened, provi sions. Declining prices for hogs tended also to drag down the market. The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. High. ' Low. Close. May $ .91 $ .! .1 $ .1 July SS .83 .S7 .67 CORN.
