THE MORNING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, DECE3IBER G, 1913. 17 HO RUSH TO SELL Hopgrowers, as Rule, Want Better Prices. MARKET HOLDING STEADY Tnrnty-Onc Cents Tald br Local Uoalcr for Large Lot at Anrora. Acrenpc in Kngland May Ro Reduced. Tliere was no run on the part of growers j-'sterday to hop. Msny made inquiries nnd a number of lota were offered to dealers, but there mas no disposition imonr the sxowers to make concession.. In fact, the majority of thein held oat for better prices than hare been paid rn the last few days. Herman Schmidt, of Aurora, sold 164 tales to Seavey J.mnson at 21 cent. MrXeff Bros, bought 10O bales from T. A. I.lresley at 21 i cents. Ths 4arirest deal of the day was closed by A. J. Ray at Hon, who bought 400 bales at 20 cents. Commenting on the attitude of English erewsrs toward the hop market, a. writer flu the British Brewers' Journal says: We are face to face with a Tory critical l eiiod In regard to the future supply of hops, and never In the history of the trade has there been a time wnen an increase of the acreage under hop cultivation was so de sirable, and so necessary, as It now la Tct, at the very time when an Increased acreage Is so vital to the brewing Industry, the brew. ere are being led Into a trap, and are doing everything that Ilea In their power not only to prevent an tncreaae of the acreage, but to actually bring about a large decrease, and It seems that their efforts are likely to meet with an astonishing success, for a movement Is already well advanced, having for Its object the organised grubbing of a large portion of the present hop acreage. This has been broupht about solely la the first instance by the great antagonism shown by hop traders and brewers to the Interests of the growers this jear and by the advice to buy American hops and let the English growers watt, which has been so readily acted upon by many brewers. "It Is well known that the exceptionally early purchase of American hops on English account had the effect of raising American prices to a large extent. Probably this hss suited the English traders. We know that American hops were bought at about Sos per cwL, and that they have since chsnged bands at about CS per ewt. Probably large profits have been made, and no one can blame tradera for pushing the sale of hops -which yield large profits, but brewers would Jiave done better to have left Americans severely alone for the present, and to have secured their English hops first. To purchase, early, hops which cannot or ought not to be used until they are pretty well 1:! months old. and to delay pur chafing those which can be used Immediate, ly, seems to be not only unwise, but abso lutely suicidal when the natural result o( such policy is a reduction of acreage, and consequently a continuance of high prices In the future. Instead of a quick return to normal quotations.' ALL WHEAT MARKETS ARE FIRM Millers lloldlnz Bark. Owing- to How IX. mand for Kjtport Jrloor. Ail wheat markets were firm yesterday. I'KICES OF EGGS ARE BEING CUT Dealers Shade Quotations te Keep Mock. Moving-. Oregon eggs are being offered at all kinds of prlcts. without much distinction between candled and case count. Quotations on the street range from 40 to 44 cents. Dealers with large stocks are selling cheap to keep the eggs moving, while those lightly sup. plied are holding at a firmer price, expect ing bad weather to stimulate the market. Poultry receipts were light and chickens of ail kinds were firm. Turkeys, ducks and geese were slow. There was a liberal supply of veal, but the demsnd was good and the market was firm at 11 cents. The pet result of todsya trading was Insignificant. There were soma striking chsngea among the spe cialties, but movements of the Issues on which speculative efforts center wera earring and meaningless. Tentative efforts were made to depress prices on the theory that the recent rise had weakened the market's position and that a reaction was Indicated by continued reports of slackening activity In trade and by the current money rates. The coppers. In particular, showed a heavy tone. The list ss a whole, however, held fairly steady. This exhibition of undertylhg firmness gave tho shorts some uneasiness. There were evidences, also, of a slow but stesdy ab sorption of high-grade aharea for the long account The result was that prtcea be gan to mend, being carried In some cases above yesterday's close. Stiff rstes for call money effectively pre vented epeculatlve buying on a large scale. Call loana renewed today at 8 per cent and rose to tM3, but later eased off decidedly. Among the specialties.
