Early returns in Albany's biennial city election Indicate the election of I M. Curl, as Mayor, by a bis; ma Jorlty. In the Totes counted at 10 o'clock Curl Is leading; W. S. Richards. Socialist, by a vote of 26J to loO. F. E. Van Tassel, candidate for re election as City Recorder, is leading B. M. Payne, by 76 votes. A. Austin, candidate for re-election as Chief of Police, and F. L. Kles, are running neck and neck in the four-cornered race for that office, Austin leading at 10 o'clock by eight votes. Harry B. Cusick has been re-elected City Treasurer. F. H. Pfeiffer has been elected Councilman in the First Ward and M. J. Cameron re-elected in the Pecond Ward. The. race in the Third Ward Is close between the three can didates. A total of 1313 votes was cast In today's election which is about 80 per rent of the registration. It is esti mated that from 35 to 40 per cent of the votes were csst by women. Amendments allowing the City Coun cil to authorise street improvements at expense of persons benefited, more free dom In establishing highways, making assessments, collecting damage and Increasing the city limits slightly, all carried. The "wets" carried all of fices but City Marshal and spilt even In Council. Four hundred and fifty votes were cast. The election did not cre ate much Interest, as no vital Issues were voted upon. At the city election held toriny there were two tickets in the field, the city ticket and citizens' ticket. The citizens' elected its complete ticket as follows: For Mayor, Forrest Mliler: Council men for three years. R. J. Stump, H. V. Belknap. L. E. Cook; for two years. CJ. R. Fish and William Schroeder; Re corder. F. N. O'Connor; Treasurer, F. A. Saylor. These men. with John Boone, who is hold-over Councilman, will comprise the City Council for the ensuing year. The number of votes cast was 14. Women cast about one-third of the votes. CHARTER REJECTED AT SCIO AV. A. Ewinjr Is Successful Candidate In Race for Mayor. ALBANY. Or Dec 1. (Special.) W. A. Ewing was elected Mayor of ticlo In the city election there today, defeating J. A. Bllyeu by four votes. J. S. SUcha was elected Recorder and Roy V. Shelton Treasurer, both with out opposition, and J. K. Weddle won out for Marshal over J. M. Lindley by 20 majority. Out of 10 candidates for Councilman the following seven were successful: TL M. Cain. P. H. Macdonald. A. W. Hagey. A. O. Prill. N. I. Morrison. Enoch Shelton and Fred Bllyeu. A proposed new city charter was de feated by nine votes. Two women were chosen members of the City Council In the election in Podavlllo today and the two women who were numbered among the five successful candidates of the 10 nom inees for the Council are the wives of the men who were elected City Re corder and City Marshal In the same election. The officers chosen are: Treasurer. Herman Selfert; Record er, Allen Simons; Marshal. N. Bridges; members of Council, Mrs. . Bridges, Mrs. Cora Fimons. A. Cole, Q. Mason and Charles Thacker. No Mayor was elected, as under the Sodavllln ordi nance the Mayor is chosen by the City Council. SHERIDAN DEFEATS CHARTER Ernot Dllley Is Elected Mayor and Frank Dickey Marshal. SHERIDAN. Or, Dec. 1. (Special.) Results of the annual city election to day were: Mayor, Ernest Dllley; Re corder, J. R. Sanders, re-elected; Mar shal. Frank Dickey; Treasurer, E. W. Haas, re-elected: Councilmen. First Ward. B. H. Evans: Second Ward. R C. Field and Lee Howell. Interest In the election centered mainly in the adoption of a new char ter for the city. This was defeated, 10. to 119. Working under the provisions of the state law until its charter is adopted, the municipal election In West Linn will be held tomorrow. The city will not adopt its new char ter until December 29. though it will vote upon Us first regular City Council tomorrow. The town has had a full list of municipal officers since It de cided to incorporate but these officials held office only for 60 days until the regular term began. McKinstry defeated A. A. Porter for Mayor. Mc Kinstry 's election Is considered due to a circular Issued by Porter supporters late last night, to which exception was taken by many. Voting was light, but little over half those registered going to the polls. The results were: Councilmen First Ward, Bert Barnes: Second Ward, P. B. Herman, short term and G. M. Caldwell, re-elected for regular term: Third Ward. W. P. Counts; Fourth Ward. Lee Sill. Treasurer G. P. Jester, re-elected. INDEPENDENCE VOTE IS HEAVY Women Are Active and Mayoralty Majority Is 33. Junction City held the election of city officers today, 19i ballots being east, four of which were defective. This exceeds by SO the largest number of ballots ever cast In this city before. City election returns give Smead a ma jority of 41 over Farnsworth for Mayor. Minor and Klrkby were re-elected Councilmen by good majorities. J. O. Hager was elected over two other dry candidates. J. 1. Williams. Recorder, was re-elected, defeating the opposi tion candidate 21 votes. The total vote cast was the largest on record, with an equal division between the wets and drys. School Slto Change Voted. ALBANY. Or.. Dec. 1. (Special.) In a special school election today, the people of Albany school district de cided by a majority of 50 votes to ex change the block now occupied by the central public school for a part of the present campus of Albany College. The exchange Is part of a plan to secure the central school site for a location for a City Hall. The vote was 2S0 for the exchange and 230 against. Wets Win at Lafayette. LAFAYETTE. Or.. Dec. 1.
