High Praise From Officials. ' Mora than 100 entries were made at the Lents School poultry shoW yester day by pupils, about 600 birds being displayed. Then were the pick of 1891 birds raised as the result of, the show,' which are valued at 1 1000. About 1600 persons visited the show. The displays were made In the basement, where they were attractively arranged. Coops were made mainly by the school children. One coop contained the poul try exhibit of a girl 10 years of agro and one boy 6 years old had an exhibit, Edwin N. Welnbaum, who represent ed the Portland Commercial Club, said It was one of the most creditable dis plays of high-class poultry he had Been during the year. Miss Matle Train had charge of the preparations for the show and direct ed the pupils. Principal Hershner had general charge. Mrs. Olive Kelly and Mrs. Pearl V. Freeberger were the judges. Every child who made an en try received a token of some sort. Room 14 Wins Cup. Principal Hershner presented the .awards from the platform of the as sembly hall. The silver cup donated by the Portland Commercial Club for the best all-round show of poultry was awarded to class room 14 and honora ble mention was given, room 17. A silk flag donated by C. C. Chapman, of the Portland Commercial Club, for best dec orations, went to class room 20, with honorable mention for room 13. A special price of $5 from the Multnomah State Bank for best exhibit by boys went to Ralph Mitchell and the second prize, was won by Cyril Fleming. The Lents Commercial Club award of $5 for the best exhibit by girls was won by Sarah Wands. Ralph Mitchell won three other prizes. General Airarda Listed. The following general awards were made: Setting of "White Orpington eggs, do. nated by Mrs. Olive Kelly, for best trio of Orpingtons, was won by Isabella Mitchell. Setting of Rhode Island Red eggs, donated by William F. Kelly, for best trio of Reds, Ralph Mitchell. Setting of White Plymouth ' Rock eggs, donated by Pearl V. Freeberger, for best exhibit of White Plymouth Rocks, Hewitt Hatter. Fifty cents, donated by F. R. Foster, for best trio of Barred Rocks, Ruth Reynolds. Fifty cents, for most unique exhibit, Helen Colgan. Second prize for most unique exhibit, 10 pounds of scratch feed, donated by 4olden Rod Milling Company, Edward Kearney. Special prlae on female bird, a sub scription to Poultry Life, awarded to Paul Henry on Silver Leghorn hatched from egg Imported from Germany. For best story of work done In fourth and fifth grades, a knife, Elea nor Wood. For best story of work done in sixth grjtde, knife, Bernie Kearns. UNCLE AWARDED CHILDREN Contest for Care of Orphuns Decided at Oregon City. OREGON' CITY. Or., Nov. 26. (Spe cial.) W. Li. McCabe, brother of Thomas Francis McCabe, who killed his wife and committed suicide at Firwood, near Sandy, .won in the fight before County Judge H. S. Anderson today for the custody of the children and the ad ministration of the estate. The two sides oC-the house have been fighting- over these matters since the tragedy. The brother, on request of the father, Thomas McCabe, filed appli cation for letters of administration and the petition was granted. Noah C. Kuhn, father of Mrs. McCabe, then came Into court and asked that the order be et aside and that he be given the le . ters instead. Secretary of State Olcott has mailed about 16,000 blank applications for reg istration of automobiles to the owners of machines and chauffeurs for 1914. There will be a different number plate for pleasure and commercial cars tban motorcycles, .the motorcyole plates hav ing a dark blue background with white letters and figures. Blanks also .have been mailed to County Clerks and owners of garages, so that there will be no question that all owners of automobiles and chauf feurs receive them. The state will re ceive about $56,000 for automobile li censes next year, which will be 914,000 more than was received this year. The money received from registra tions under the motor vehicle law is apportioned to the counties of the state in proportion to the number of regis tered motor vehicles in them. The fol lowing Is a part cf a statement that has been mailed by the Secretary of State: - "Chauffeur registrations expire De cember 31 of each year, and must be renewed annually, to take ef fec Jan uary 1, following, as required. The badges of 1813 were in the form of a shield .with appropriate let tering in black." ' STILLINGS STAYS IN JAIL Head of Big Corporation Charged With Blue Sky Violation Bitter. EUGENE, Or., Nov. 26. (Special.) Relying on the treaty of 1815, George E. Stilllngs, president of the National Mercantile Company, of Vancouver, B. C declares he will be cleared of the charge of violating the Oregon "blue sky" law because of his failure to se cure a license before attempting to conduct his agency In this state. Mr. Stilllngs was arrested In Portland Sat urday at the request of Ralph Watson, State Commissioner of Corporations, and was brought to Eugene, where his agents, G. G. Hune and O. W. Sund berg, had been arrested. The latter two have been released on ball, but Stilllngs, though president of a $2,000, 000 corporation, has not furnished ball. "I can't use other people's money for my own ball." he explained yester day, "and besldes.'my company is not a rich man's company. It Is a poor man's company, although the assets are some $2,000,000. Twenty years 'ago Milton Barnett, of Benton County, shipped a team to his friend, Frank Edwards, a broker at Portland, with the understanding that the team was to he sold. Mr. Barnett got returns on the team . yesterday when a Benton County Jury awarded him 950 and costs of the suit to re cover. Mr. Barnett failed to get a settle ment, and when he would have sued to recover It was discovered that Mr. Edwards had left the starts. A few days ago ho returned to Oregon to Join a family reunion, and service was ob tained. That the account was still a "live" one at the end of 20 years was due to the fact that . Mr. Edwards had been away constantly from the state. LIQUOR MAN YEAR IN JAIL Local Option "Law Violator of Albany Still Has 225 Days to Serve. ALBANY, Or., Nov. 26.1-(Speclal.) Last . Sunday completed exactly one year's service In the Linn County Jail for Albert Peacock, of Albany, his Im prisonment setting the record here foi the longest incarceration for violation of the local option liquor law. Efforts are being made by Pea cock's friends to obtain a pardon for him. If he is not released by executive clemency or the payment of fines not yet served out, e will have to remain in the Jail 225 'days longer. Peacock was sentenced on Novem ber 23, 1912, on four different cases growing out of the sale of liquor in Albany in violation of the local option liquor law. Cottage Grove to Send 11' South.
