Ong. who is attend ing Miss Lydla Schiewe at the Good Samaritan Hospital, said last night tnat miss scntewe had about an even break for recovery. Civic League Announces Meeting William Fielding Ogburn will preside at me pre-election civic luncheon ar ranged by the Oregon Civic League for Saturday noon at the New Oregon Hotel Fountain Grill. William Mac Kenzie, secretary Stationary Engineers' Union, will speak in favor of the work men's compensation act, and Hamilton Johnstone will oppose it. As accom modations are limited, reservations should be made not later than 12 o clock Friday to R. Fulton Riseling. Motor Boat Cases Dismissed. The four motor boat cases, in which Eskel Helkkila, Jorgen Gabrielsen. J Popejoy and Franklin Knight were the defendants, were dismissed in the United States District Court yesterday. Judge Bean considered that the law had been vindicated sufficiently in that the defendants already had paid pen altles to the collector of customs for running gasoline motor boats with out having on board adequate fire ex tinguishers. J. H. Reed Sentenced. In the United States District Court yesterday J. H. Reed was sentenced to nine months in the County Jail for imper sonating a Deputy united states mar shal. He was allowed 10 days to file a motion for a new trial. Reed was convicted October 18. It was charged that, in his pseudo-capacity as deputy marshal, he attempted to arrest Dr. C. J. Dean and R. S. Parker, both of this city. Services at Synagogue Tonight. Services will be held this evening at the bixtn street synagogue, corner Hall and Sixth streets, at 7:30 o'clock. Mas ter Lewis P. Brawn. , who charmed his audiences with his magnetic voice on a previous occasion, will lecture this evening on "The Giving of Charity." Morning service begins at 9 o'clock. Sunday school every Sunday at 10 A. M. Dr. J. Block is superintendent. , Sunnysidh Club Indorses. The university appropriation bill, the work men's compensation act, the Inter state bridge and the location of the City Auditorium on the East Side were measures indorsed by the Sunnyside Improvement Club at its regular monthly meeting Wednesday night adoul 23 memDers oi me club were present. Jail Sentence Given Bootlegger. Sentence of 60 days in the Umatilla County jail and a fine of $100 and costs was pronounced on Harry Redford in the United States District Court yes terday lor taking liquor on the Uma tilla Indian Reservation October 9. Redford was granted a 60 days' stay of commitment on account of his wife being ill. Concrete to Be Used on Vista Avenue wali To make the Vista avenue wall thoroughly substantial ar rangements have been made for the use of concrete piling under the base. The piles will be driven by a Port land concern. It is said the plan will require about 1000 lineal feet of piling at sz.ao a loot. J. E. Werlin Honored. J. E. Wer- lm, former president of the Port land Transportation Club, received notice yesterday that he has been made an honorary life member of the organ. Izatlon. The honor came as the re sult of much effective work performed by Mr. Werlein for the club. Great Northern to Give Cup. Miss Willda Buckman, lecturer, will have charge. Pioneer Woman Dies Mrs. Su sannah Kennedy, a pioneer woman, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Altstock, 469 East Stark street Wednesday, at the age of 74 years. Mrs. Kennedy came to Portland in 1866 and had lived here ever since. Sh was married to Napoleon Kennedy 46 years ago, and he survives her. He has two daughters living, Mrs. Altstock and Miss Rose Kennedy. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at o'clock from the St Francis Church, East Twelfth and East Pine streets. Fresh Oregon Beef. Every ounce of meat at Frank L. Elderly Woman Attempts Suicide. Despondent over the loss of one arm and one eye, injured in an accident several weeks ago, Mrs. Mary Baker, 6a years old. attempted suicide yester day in her room at Fourteenth and Pettygrove streets. She stuffed th cracks of door and windows and turned on the gas. Persons living in the house noticed the odor and broke down the door. She was removed in an Ambu lance Service Company machine to St Vincent's Hospital, where her condi tlon is said to be critical. Wheeler's Salary Goes On. The City Commission yesterday passed resolution providing for the payment of the salary of J. N. Wheeler, chief inspector In the Public Works Depart ment while he is confined because of injuries received In an accident on East Sixth street and Portland boule vard last Saturday. Wheeler In trying to escape running his automobile into a bakery wagon skidded the machine Into an old gravel pit The machine turned over twice, seriously injuring Mr. Wheeler, Lard Compound to Be Exported. Six carloads of "lard compound" will go from Portland to Manila on the Ham burg-American steamer C. Ferd Laeisz. which sails from Portland on November 4. This is the first shipment of the kind from this city and has been made possible by the recent inaugu ration of Oriental service out of Fort land. The "lard compound" Is manu factured by the Union Meat Company, which aims to build up an extensive Oriental trade In this commodity. Hawthorne Bridge Lift Sticks. When the lift span of the Hawthorne bridge stuck near the top of the piers yeBterday morning traffic over the bridge was suspended for nearly an hour. The bridge was lifted 111 feet to permit the schooner W. H. Smith to pass through. Trouble with the brakes caused the span to rise a little higher than had been planned and the whole span stuck. It was an hour before the machinery could be made to draw it back down. Halloween at Sellwood T. M. C. A. At the Sellwood Y. M. C. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Agnes, Teresa and Leona Delaet Mrs. Delaet was the daughter of Mrs. Mary Eves, of Port land, and Bister of Thomas and William Eves, of Battleground. Wash. George H. Leonard Dies. George H. Leonard, a well-known resident of Portland, died at his home, 896 Sandy road, yesterday. He was 74 years of age and had lived here for 13 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. John D. Williams and Miss Elizabeth Leon ard, daughters, and Thomas W. Leon ard, a son. He was born in Parkers burg, W. Va. Demurrers Are Sustained. In the cases of the Columbia Southern, the Columbia River & Oregon Central and the Smoke River Valley Railroad Com panies against David M. Dunne, the de- urrers were sustained ana ine cases dismissed by Judge Bean in the United States District Court yesterday. Cashier to Talk on Currency. An address on "Currency," by Edgar H. Guerilla tactics were used at Sixth and Alder streets last night when street orators attempted to speak from moving automobile. Agnes Bean, Hilma Karlquist and Lena Furstag were arrested for refusing to comply with a traffic ordinance and Joe Pas tor was arrested for disorderly conduct The zeal and conduct of Edward Sny der, a paper vender, resulted In his ar. rest on a similar charge. A full platoon of police were on duty to handle the crowd and were kept busy with the disappearance and re appearance of the militants as they attempted to enter Sixth street from Morrison, Alder and Washington streets.
