FARMER BADLY SHOT Axel Smith Identifies Prisoner as Assailant. $700 IN CASH SOUGHT Injured Man Is Rushed on Handcar to Stevenson, Wash., Where He Lies in Critical Condition. Officers Find Money Orders. STEVENSON, "Wash., Oct. 17. (Spe cial.) Axel Smith, a well-known resi dent of Home Valley, five miles east of here, was shot In the base of the skull by a stranger, who endeavored to rob him, between 7 and 8 o'clock last night. Early In the evening Smith was accosted by a stranger who demanded his money. The stranger declared that Smith had $700 on his person, and upon the lat ter's refusal to give up his money, he was forced to a small lake nearby. Here, according to Smith, another de mand was made for ills money, and when he again refused, he was forced into the water and bound. When Smith finally attempted to reach the shore, a difficult task on account of his bind ings, he asserts, the stranger shot him in the back of the head and escaped. Sheriff Gray was notified as soon as the injured man could reach the rail road track, where a number of laborers were unloading lumber. With Deputy Sheriff John Sweeney he left for the scene of the shooting on the 8:15 local. At Home Valley they found Smith in a critical condition and summoned Dr. Avery, who went to Home Valley on a handcar and took Smith back In the same manner to the Stevenson hospital, where he lies in a critical though con scious condition. Upon Investigating the officers found little cash on Smith's person, but In his possession $541 In checks, $500 of which was in postal money orders. Un der Smith's direction they found $40 under the Smith house. The officers today arrested a stranger who gave his name as William Bird. He was immediately taken before Smith at the hospital and was identified by the latter as the man who bad tried to kill him the night before. Smith Is & peaceable and hard-working man who has resided at Home Valley over three years. He is well and favorably known and the people of that vicinity are wrought up over the occurrence. HARRIMAN BALL SUCCESS Nearly Six Hundred Persons Attend Clnb Affair. The Harriman Club ball at the Armory last night was one of the larg- est affairs given by this organization Nearly 600 persons assembled to en Joy the dance. The spacious ballroom presented a bright and attractive scene with the walls banked with palms and the ceiling studded with hundreds of electric lights. The multi-colored gowns of the fair guests gave a gay kaleidoscopic effect as the dances were in progress. The punch table was stationed in an apartment draped with large Amer ican flags and decorated with palms. The affair was made a success by C O. Holland, chairman of the dance committee, and bis assistants, Mis Grace Baird, Miss Nora Thomson, Miss Frances Pero, Miss Helen Brown, A. E. Van Strom. E. B. Lee, F. B. Egan, A. B. Holland, Mrs. A. E. Hutchinson, Mrs. A. A. Love, Mrs. Neal Murray. SALEM CANDIDATES SLOW Names, of Aldermanlc Officeseekers Cannot Go on Ballot. SALEM. Or., Oct. 17. (Special.) City Recorder Elgin announced today that under the new election law there will be no names of candidates for Aldermen on the ballots when the city election is held November 3. He says the only way voters can how their preferences Is to write the names of the persons they favor for the offices on the ballot. There are six petitions being cir culated in behalf of candidates, but they will be called in. The law pro vides that unless candidates file peti tions announcing intention to become candidates 30 days before the date of the election their names canaot be printed on the ballots. Prosecutor Hewen in his argument. asserted that the defendant, - Jackson, was a tool of the higher-ups and that the guilty persons were the city offi cials of Raymond. His argument took several hours. Attorney Lockerby made the first address in the interest of J, W. Jackson, arguing that Jackson had acted in good faith, and the only evi dence against him was the unsupported evidence of Mrs. Rose, who had per- Jured herself. Councilman Culver was represented by Attorney O'Phelan, who explained that his client had nothing to do with the conspiracy case. , At the night session John T. Welsh, a brother of Martin Welsh, bitterly assailed the prosecution for the class of witnesses it relied on. In the morning C. W. Fulton will make his argument. Bert Scott, who was sentenced to U days in jail and a $100 fine for con tempt of court in refusing to divulge the name of a woman he was with a the time he is said to have assaulted Coleman, was released on bond pend lng the appeal of his case. REMEDIAL FUND GROWS TODAY IS DATE MMTT SET BY FINANCE COMMITTEE. Those In Charge Declare That if Charitable Enterprise Is De layed It May Never Come. ' This is the last day of the last week jet by the finance committee of the Remedial Loan Association as the time by which the necessary fund for begin ning business should be completed. Wil frid P. Jones, chairman of the com mittee, also says this Is the last hope for such a loan society; that If it is not accomplished now it will not be done at all. Mr. Jones, with Robert S. Howard and V. R. Manning, the other members of tbe committee, will make a determined effort to have the last dollar signed up by tonight. A sub stantial gain was made yesterday and confidence was expressed that the en terprlse, promoted by the Progressive Business Men s Club and the Associated Charities, backed by leading citizens, win reach fruition. There were many applications for loans yesterday at the temporary head quarters, and Manager Hamblen said that every one of them would have been a good loan: It is hoped to open the office for business not later than the last of next week. State Game Warden Flnley gavtf a lec ture tonight. VACATION SALARIES WON Former Policemen of Oregon City Take Claims to Court. OREGON CITY, Or., Oct 17. (Spe cial.) Constable Jack Frost and S. R Green, former members of the city po lice force, won their suits In the Jus tice Court of the county today against Oregon City for the collection of their salaries during their Summer vacation last year. The case has been before the City Council several times and has, each time, been turned down. The Council refused to make the payment on the grounds that the men were not on duty when they were supposed to have been and that they were not entitled to the pay for the regular vacation. Suit was immediately brought before Justice John N. Seivers, in whose court Frost is Constable. HALF OF .VOTERS REGISTER Ashland Citizens Have Month to Qualify for City Election. ASHLAND, Or., Oct 17. (Special.) Registration, for the state nd county election which occurs November 4 will close here tomorrow: For the city election, however,- which will be held In December, the registration will not olose until November 15.
