17 TITE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1913. E PARTY NEAR ROCKS Division of Progressives Over Senatorial Campaign Issue , Now Seems Imminent. LEADERS DODGING TARIF Senator Jones Is Attacked In At' tempt to DiTert Attention and More Discord Follows Poln dexter May Bo Democrat. OLTMP1A. Wash.. Oct 1. (Bpeclal.) What to take tor a campaign issue for the coming Senatorial fight Is question on which Progressive leaders are at sharp variance, bo cecldea is the conflict of opinion that a split into rival camps seems imminent. The three Bull Moose members Congress from this state Senator Polo dexter, and Representatives falconer and Bryan are inclined to agree that the tariff Is the only real issue that has developed since the campaign of 112, But on which side of the tariff queatio to allien themselves these men are RharDlv divided. Polndexter and Bryan havlnsr voted tor the Underwood tariff bill, while Falconer opposed It strongly. Bryan, who is an avowed candidate for the Senate, la busy pointing out. 1 all parts of the state, that under th circumstances It would be lmpossibl for Senator Polndexter to support Fal coner for the Senate. That Polndexter has definitely alllgned himself witn Bryan in the Senatorial fight, as was predicted some time ago, now seems to be generally accepted as fact. Tariff Votes Cause Change. On the other hand, prominent organs which supported the Progressives -dur lnar the last campaign are now assail In Polndexter and Bryan for their votes on the tariff. This element in the narty. it is believed, would be will lng to accept Falconer as a Senatorial candidate. Should Falconer get the Progressive nomination this would leave little choice for Polndexter and Bryan but to support the Democratic nominee for the Senate. In the opinion 01 state pan tlcians. In fact, for months past there Vinva been reports afloat that Polndex- tAr was DreDarine to return to the fiomocratic party. The Junior Washing ton Senator comes from a Democratic family In Virginia and no one heard of him being a Republican until he land- r-rl in Wa.HhineTt.on politics. Pointing still more strongly toward a possible return of Polndexter to the Democratic) fold Is the fact that he has been able to exert much influence wltft the, Wilson Administration. The fro gresslve Senator Is given all credit for the appointment of Clay Allen, of Se attle, as District Attorney. It Is known that his influence was largely respon sible for the naming of Jere Neterer as Federal Judge. Appointments Are Secured. Furthermore. Polndexter secured the appointment of a Seattle follower, Her man W. craven, as memoer 01 mo ttonal Civil Service Commission and tin a succeeded In having .his only ap nolntee of Importance under the Taft Administration, waiter r-. nun, wun- tlnuad In office as postmaster at opo kane, several months after his term had feXDlred. Brvan. like Polndexter, is rrom tne south, has Democratio leanings, ana the strong Republican majority In this state Is regarded as the primary reason for his following that party's standard on locating here. A rain. If Bryan should get the nom inatlon for the Senate, Progressives who have been criticising sharply his stand on the tariff question almost surely wonld go over to the Repub lican camp. Even the nomination of some candidate other than Bryan or Falconer would be unlikely to relieve the situation, as the tariff seems bound to be tho National issue to be eettiea In this states at the next election. The Progressives, who treated this question In generalities during the last cam paign, now are being called on to de termine definitely whether they will go In, the protection or the near-free trade camp. Progressives Attack Jones. Progressive leaders are attempting to get away from the tariff Issue by creating a new one, attacking United States Senator Jones for his pro-Lorl-mer vote. This action also has created some discord, as some of the Progres sives, looking toward a possible re union with the Republican party, be lieve the bull moose have attacked the Republicans long enough, and think the heavy batteries should be devoted to the Democrats from now on. There- is every evidence that both the Republicans and Democrats will make a straight-out fight on the Issues raised by the Wilson Administration, with the tariff held of primary Im portance. This has been the attitude taken by Senator Jones himself, who seems reasonably sure of securing the Republican nomination, and the Demo crats naturally will rush to the defense of the Administration. STATE FARM IS DESIRED Junction City Seeking Branch Dem onstration Station, JUNCTION CITY, Or, Oct. 1. (Special.)
