VOYAGE VESSEL'S SECOND Trip Made in Favorable Weather Ex cept In China Sea, Where Ty phoon Encountered Flour and Grain to Be Loaded. The Vestalia, of Glasgow, one of the largest freighters that has ever come up the Willamette, arrived here yes terday from London by way of the . Orient. She is commanded by Captain James Pattie. This is her second voy age, the previous one having been to Australia. After passing through the Suez Canal, the Vestalia had 1 discharg ing points. Her first stop was at Port Paid, then Sabang. Sumatra. Then she had three stops in Straits Settlements, at Penang. Port Swetten ham and Singapore. She next put in at Hongkong, then Shanghai. Manila. Keelung. in Formosa. Kutchtnotza, Kobe and Yokohama. From Japan she crossed the Pacific, her next stops being at Vancouver. B. C; Seattle and Tacoma. The Vestalia carries a mixed cargo. She will be In Portland a week, load ing flour and grain. From here she will go hark to Puget Sound, where she will take on salmon. Captain Pattie said tue voyage was uneventful, the weather being for the most part f.iir. except in the China Sea, where a small typhoon was en countered. BAR SOrXDIXGS TO BE MADE Results of Dredging Operations of Chinook to Be Learned. ASTORIA. Or., Sept. 1. (Special.) Tomorrow morning a force of United Slates engineers on board the tug Men dell will begin taking official sound ings at the mouth of the Columbia River to ascertain what the increase in depth of water has been as a result of the dredging- operations by the -Chinook. Wednesday or Thursday soundings also will be made by experienced pilots to ascertain how their figures check up with those of the engineers. Marine Notes. The Pacific Navigation Company will make the folowing cut-rates. the round-trip tickets being good for 15 days: San Francisco to Los Angeles. $.3o, round-trip. $8.70; to San Diego, $8; round-trip, $12. Prop. bor last night and docked at the Port land Lumber Company's mill. She will take on a full cargo of fir lumber foi North China. She is under charter to the Robert Dollar Steamship Company. The Yucatan, of the Northern Pacific line, arrived at Martin's dock last night from San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Portland Boiler Works has been awarded the contract, on a bid of $7250, to repair the German bark Thielbek, which was damaged in a collision with the Norwegian steamship Thode Fage lund at Astoria. The repairs are to be completed in 22 days. The Benson Logging Company will ship another immense cigar-shaped raft tomorrow evening from Wallace Slough en route to San Diego. The raft which the company shipped last June and which went aground in a freshet may be floated by digging around it with a dredge. Marine Notes. The Bailey Gatzert took a large crowd of Labor Day excursionists to the Cascade Locks yesterday. The boat left at 9 A. M. and returned shortly after 6 P. M. Top Quotation Is Now $9.50 Lambs Sell Readily at Former Prices. Good Cattle Steady. As usual on Monday there was a full run of cattle at the stockyards. Hogs were slao falriv plentiful and there was a mod erate supply of sheep. A considerable amount of business was put through in the morning, and in the afternoon the trade tooa advantage of the holiday. The only Impor tant chango In tho market was the weak ness that developed in the hog division. About six loads of steers were disposed jr. One load of prime quality was taken at $8, and the others brought 7 to $7.70. Only a few cow sales were made and they were at former prices. A big bunch of 200-pouni calves sold at $0.50. The hog market was off 15 cents from last week's lop level, with $9.50 the extreme price. Most of the sales were around $9.40. Heavy swine did not go over 4S.D0. There was more doing In lambs than has been the case for several weeks. Six good sized bunches were moved, and for the best buyers paid $3.25. -the old price.
