THE MORNDfG OREGOXIAX, FRIDAY, JULY 25, 1913; lb MOIST' S INJURY FATAL CTLAUD SOIPTIOX D-IES FEW HOURS AFTER ACCIDENT. Misses Clara Frye and Pearl Wlll lams Recover Sufficiently to Leave Hospital. Claud Sumption, the 19-year-old son of Dr. H. 1. Sumption, died at 6:B0 yes terday morning at Good Samaritan Hospital from Injuries which he re ceived when his father's five-passenger auto, which he was driving-, struck a telegraph pole, shortly after midnight yesterday. The injured youth did not regain consciousness. His neck was broken. The funeral will be from Dun ning & McEntee's at 2 o'clock Satur day and burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Miss Clara Frye. of 474 Columbia street, and Miss Pearl Williams, of Ok den. Utah, who also were Injured, were able to leave the hospital late yester day, their injuries being of only minor character. "Curtis D. Hickock. the fourth member of the auto party, re ceived only a few bruises. The Sump tion home 1s at 372 North Twenty-third street. Miss Williams Is a cousin of Miss Frye and is visiting her here. Members of Company B, Third Regi ment. Oregon National Guard, to which young Mr. Sumption belonged, will at tend his funeral. It Is said the accident occurred when t Sumption turned his head to speak to . his companions. The car struck a soft spot In the road, lurched and went into a seven-foot ditch. It was demolished. A few hours before the accident Sumption's party met Dr. E. D. John son and a party stalled in an auto. Sumption and Hickock stopped to help. Sumption ' remarking that "we may need help ourselves, sometime." Later Dr. Johnson was one of those sum moned to try and save the young man's life. This was the announcement yesterday of City Engineer Hanson, who says the-regular weed cutters of the depart ment are unable to attend to all the work; on hand. Time for catting- of weeds on hun dreds of lots In the city under the new weed ordinance has expired and reg ular employes of the city have more work In sight than they would be able to attend to in several months. Jackling, vice-president and general manager of the Bingham & Garfield Railroad in Utah and owner of extensive mining- properties in that state, was in Portland yesterday and called on local railroad officials. ' Mr. Jackllng has been on a visit to Alaska and is making- a tour of the Coast. He will go from Portland to San Fran cisco. He Is a close friend of J. H.
